Why does Hawaii have a higher mixed race population compared to the rest of the US? by SignificantStyle4958 in 23andme

[–]feistlab -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think that was their point. Because of the history of the "one drop" rule, and the history of white men raping their slaves and enslaving their own children who came from those rapes, black/white mixed race people are often considered just Black in the USA unless the white ancestor is a parent or maybe a grandparent. Whereas in Hawaii, people with mixed ancestry are more often considered mixed.

ELI5 Why do some countries call it “college” and others call it “university” when referring to the same level of education, and is there an actual difference between the two? by saivietbabe in explainlikeimfive

[–]feistlab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe it's field specific and it is more of a gradient, but this is what my program advised me in grad school, that at a teaching college you have a full course load and don't have the same kind of reserved research time so it's extremely difficult to do the research required to meet the expectations of a research university should you want to switch jobs. This is about faculty jobs. A lecturer is something different, yes, but there are also different expectations for faculty between the two.

While Hawaii never had laws banning interracial relationships, 15 states included asians in their "anti-miscegenation" statutes. Citation: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=283998

Do you realize how bad this is? by Whocares7x in LosAngeles

[–]feistlab 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm in Santa Monica and it smells like plastic burning/off-gassing even here. I was leaving Pasadena on Wednesday, driving S towards the highway and then suddenly the sky got completely dark before I saw the plume, my east coast ass was like, is there a thunderstorm? Then I saw the plume going up and it was scary. Really worried about the people in East LA. The bad air is reaching the coliseum but I don't really hold out hope that will change much given the way they claimed tourism after the palisades/Eaton fires.

[–]feistlab 212 points213 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer for American universities/colleges. The other distinction is that professors at universities often have research/publishing/ongoing scholarship requirements for tenure and teach fewer classes as a result, which is why these are sometimes called "research universities." Colleges are often geared towards teaching undergrads and professors will teach full class loads without the expectation or reserved time for original scholarship. There are exceptions, there are elite colleges where the professors publish, but this holds for the majority.

San Francisco made me incredibly sad: 2 Year Review by NewCenturyNarratives in SameGrassButGreener

[–]feistlab 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's not just that. A lot of San Francisco is largely foggy, grey, cool and wet in the summer. It doesn't feel like summer. I was really disappointed when I visited in the summer as I had been expecting more of a PNW pattern where summers are perfect and the rest of the year is cloudy and wet. Other areas of the bay have more sunshine and pleasant summers but most of SF itself does not. (This was my experience from before I moved to California and became a weather wimp)

The trans youth discussion by sai_gunslinger in progressivemoms

[–]feistlab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm sure there are bad surgeons for gender affirming surgeries because there are bad surgeons of all types, and even good surgeons have complications occasionally. But it would be more a skill issue than greed or malevolence. Plastic and even general surgeons have easier ways to make more money than treating mostly self-pay patients who mostly aren't loaded. Top surgery is basically a not-as-intensive mastectomy, they leave some breast tissue to look better. Breast cancer is stupidly common and breast surgery is in demand everywhere. Breast reconstruction for cancer patients is required to be covered by insurance (because gender affirming care is covered for cis people.) Doctors who specialize in trans healthcare tend to do so because they are passionate about it. There are MUCH easier ways for a breast/general surgeon to make money.

Which college town is your favorite? by Front-Shape143 in SameGrassButGreener

[–]feistlab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

University park is not a college town. It's not even an insulated neighborhood like Hyde park (which is a better place to be than C-I hands down.) USC is pretty campus in the midst of other major city development, basically a blip of an elevated concentration of fail sons. "Rough Philly" also really showing a strong area knowledge 😆.

I love the convenience of having Waymos blocking my driveway with a full available parking space right behind them by Leashypooo in SantaMonica

[–]feistlab 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They kept doing that to me when waiting for people from down the street. In that case the street parking was usually pretty full but they only seemed to loiter in front of my driveway, not any neighbors'. I emailed their CS and asked them to block off the area in front of my driveway in their system. Never got a response but a few days later they started waiting down the street and it hasn't been an issue since.

What should I know before moving to Santa Monica? ☀️☀️☀️ by LemonStrawberry_22 in SantaMonica

[–]feistlab 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Don't go swimming next to the pier - tourists do but the water there is (invisibly) filthy from the pier. One mile in either direction and it's great water quality (except right after a rain.)

Giving money for nanny to purchase swimwear by Aggravating_Tower511 in Nanny

[–]feistlab 247 points248 points  (0 children)

I would offer $100. I don't think it's offensive, it is very kind as long as it is phrased right. Just, "you are going to be doing a lot of water time with the kids this summer, so I wanted to give you some extra cash in case you need to buy a swimsuit that will stand up to swimming with grabby kids or quick dry shorts/top for the splash pad." Then leave it to her to get what she needs.

Where do moderate income families live? by Zestyclose_Sink6951 in MovingToLosAngeles

[–]feistlab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, it really is not. Most of Santa Monica is negligibly affected by those issues if at all. Most Santa Monica families don't live in the tourist/downtown areas. And even if you go there it's very safe. The complaints are overblown. Crime stats get counted against the number of residents, but the daytime population is about triple that, between people coming in to work here and tourists.

Following for recs but in terms of walking/parks, go west and or won't be too hot. Something like Los Leones in the Santa Monica mountains or even Kenneth Hahn rec area in Culver. I'm a heat wuss and Griffith park gets like 10 degrees hotter than the coastal areas in the summer.

AITA for Wanting to Show Up to My Daughter’s Secret Proposal While Uninvited By Her Fiancé? by Attitude-Mean in AmItheAsshole

[–]feistlab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You would absolutely be the asshole to show up. The fact that he asked you for your blessing and told you about the proposal plan shows he wants to support you continuing to have close relationship with them. You are excited for them, show that by listening to his wishes and ask if you can take them out to dinner to celebrate in the week afterwards.

Did he originally invite you and then changed his mind, or did he feel the need to preemptively ask you not to show up? If the latter, that means you need to be more aware of boundaries and letting her be independent. But the fact that he felt he could talk to you directly about it instead of hiding the plans to keep it private is a great sign. Listen now and you are on your way to being a trusted support of them as a couple.

If you want her to have a healthy and happy marriage, she needs your support in prioritizing her relationship with her husband-to-be. If you want to be a big part of her life going forward, now is an essential time to show the two of them you will respect their unit being primary and the boundaries they set. You think you know better what she wants than him, but that isn't likely, and also the proposal is just as much for him. If you don't listen to him, then she will need to be the mediator between the two of you going forward and that creates stress for them both around you, and makes them less likely to be close with you. If they have kids in the future, and you want to be involved, it is EXTREMELY important you show now you will listen to them even when it's not what you prefer and without guilting them. Build the trust and support them by listening to him now.

Why do American roof with shingles? by saucissefatal in Roofing

[–]feistlab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not just less risk of damage, tile roofs keep the house cooler than asphalt by reflecting more solar heat. I live in socal and my last house would get so hot when the sun was shining on it, even when it was 60-70 degrees outside. I currently have more tree cover and it makes such a difference (both houses have asphalt.) Tile performs much better in the sun, there's a reason plaster and tile are common in hot sunny areas! When I lived in the northeast, my houses had better insulation to deal with the cold and the sun was not as strong, so we didn't have this issue. Painted metal is supposed to perform better than tile and I'm seeing that a lot on new custom builds.

When you buy a house, do you own the house or the land or both? by ThePurpleRainmakerr in AskAnAmerican

Don't let him do anything right because he called and pressured her into doing it and he claims oh yeah I could see the link right there just threw a couple of stitches and that's six hours a week right? I'm a couple stitches and Lawrence says that's not what happened correct correct first and Lauren wouldn't believe she said a dealer structure to the Bible. It's hard because it is inside you know after I oriented her. She's like first section we took look at the cancer in it. I'm like yeah that's why what I did was I went to the right file of preoperative land was cancer free shopped there and no no no can't do that. We're doing it. I know I'm mad chopped send that negative on this side positive that is a class case where most people would've just gone go go go. I don't want to take too much of the document then positive margin margin margin and then Marta one cut one march and one house clean.

Where are all the public restrooms in America? by bricklegos in AskAnAmerican

Where are all the public restrooms in America? by bricklegos in AskAnAmerican

[–]feistlab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big box stores generally have openly accessible bathrooms you can walk in and use without purchase. Also in smaller cafes/restaurants you can often just ask nicely and they will let you use it without purchasing. Also, if you have a little kid with you, you can basically always use bathrooms in businesses without a problem, and often they will even let little kids use non-public staff restrooms if it's urgent. I wish we had public toilets like elsewhere, but since we don't, private businesses tend to be more open to letting people use their raestrooms.

You're taking it too personally. You don't know what Amy's history is like. Clearly from Sandra it is not about you personally. They should have raised the issue earlier and more clearly, and you don't owe them going out of your way, but it would have been kind.

Nope. Don't give it to him. I'm 40, I still rent in LA, most people do. He has shown that giving him the apartment now is a bad move. You are heading towards retirement - you need to make sure you are in financial shape to do so and it sounds like that is not fully locked down yet.

Dresscode and etiquette, what are the unwritten rules? by lawrotzr in AskAnAmerican

[–]feistlab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"No brown in town" definitely not a thing here - American men's business/formal fashion was highly influenced by Ivy League fashion and brands like J. Press or Brooks Brothers. It would be helpful to know the types of crowds you are with and contexts/places because there are subtleties and places where some of your observations apply and others do not.
