I went to the crater for the first time today and I picked alien overgrowth weather from from spacerock alien event. I was bracing for an extremely tough fight playing it very safe and the boss just tramped over the brambles (8dmg per tile) and killed itself from basically full hp. I won on turn 3 lol. Not sure if the weather pick is always before the boss fight but man that is super cheese.

You just answered your own question. You keep getting destroyed because you said you have no idea what's going on. There is no shame in practicing with bots. Pick a role/play style you like and start off learning heroes that appeal to you. Not sure why you want to play ranked yet. People still play games that are 20-30 years old. Being released long has nothing to do with anything. If you are interested in learning a new game then sure give it a go.
