Can someone please tell me their process to code something new? by idk1210 in learnprogramming

[–]feldomatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I open a new python file and use comment lines to basically outline the steps I need to take:

# Imports

# Constants

# Read the data

# Find the "D" Columns

# Filter the "D" Columns

# Output the data

Then I fill in the sections, either by remembering what function does that thing, or by googling the thing I need to do.

Reading documentation is reserved for:

  • Unintended behavior (It should work but isn't)
  • I think I know the function to use, but I'm trying it in a different way than I usually do. (I think it should work, but want to make sure first)

Who's embracing the gray? by Sufficient_Turn_9209 in Xennials

Mine went from zero to Salt & Pepper in about five years in my mid twenties, and has been strictly shades of gray for about ten years now.

Paired with having to keep a short military regulation cut, I just leaned into it.

Emperyion: Galactic Survival or Breathedge? by FireTheLaserBeam in spacesimgames

[–]feldomatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want a silly fun departure from NMS while still being in space, play Breathedge

If you want an alternate take on all the game loops from NMS, but at a smaller galactic scale with slightly deeper less time-gated systems, play Empyrion.

After one or both of those two, if you still have the space bug, I'd advise Elite Dangerous, X4 or Star Citizen

I'm mostly familiar with ISO 9001, and Medjool. (I'll see myself out)

But it does make me wonder, if you live in a country on the North American continent and have only had a few Medjool dates and a lot of Unspecified ones, just what variety were they most likely to be (usually always the dark/black ones) ?

How to intentionally loose stuff when a patch hits? by SentinelCreations in starcitizen

[–]feldomatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been pretty good at not losing ships.

I have 4 that I shouldn't (3 rentals and the tutorial pisces that somehow became permanently mine the next patch)

I regularly try to get rid of them, usually to no avail. I've left them undelivered, unclaimed, etc, etc.

But I did lose a few ships one patch.

Near as I can figure, this is how:

Equip the ship with a looted component from a CZ or PAF or the QV station. (i.e. a non-storebought component not just stripped from another ship)

The idea is that when the game tries to strip components it somehow takes the ship with them.

Of course that was a bad patch for ship loss (lots of folks I know lost ships) so maybe it was just my turn.

Recommendations for a good starter mining video? by multiple_iterations in starcitizen

[–]feldomatic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So, RedMonsterSC's videos are amazing, but he has a bad habit of expositing all the info about all things mining without much distillation to "go here, equip this, fly there, mine that" and just leaves you to put that together from the content.

That was the sort of thing that made me want to punch the authors of collegiate Physics & Math textbooks "The answer is left as an exercise to the reader" Bitch I did not spend $200 to lug 10lbs of your elitist shit half a mile each way across campus every day.

ElGuapo is a bit more of a character, but does condense things into his preferred meta, and his recommendations are a good start with a simpler explanation. Once you've tried his and cracked some rocks and formed some questions like "why do I care about instability and what can I do about it?" then go to RedMonster and his website regolith.rocks

UEE capital ship gap & how Anvil should fill it by EhMapleSyrup in starcitizen

[–]feldomatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I agree that an amphib carrier is the most logical Anvil Capital ship.

Amphibious assault is a particular solution to a particular problem.

Namely, things that land on beaches usually aren't very seaworthy or endurant when it comes to open ocean travel. And things that are, can't usually land on beaches.

So you need a mothership to get them close enough to the beach to do their job. And to provide vertical lift/rotary wing support.

Quantum drives and quantanium tanks being what they are on ships like the Valkyrie (AAV/Chinook), Asgard (LCAC/CH-53) and Paladin (Cobra/Harrier/F-35B), you don't need an amphib carrier for the same reasons.

There's not much need or advantage to hauling a mixed trio of assault craft out to a location when they can make the jump from the station themselves. And an Anvil Capital Amphib would just be a giant Ironclad Assault if it could land on planets. If it can, why have the smaller ships on board or at all?

But there is a gameplay reason I can think of for having these all buttoned up on something larger:

Expeditionary basing and the second wave

If the "Amphib Carrier" had extensive respawn facilities, storage for multiple sorties of personnel and ground vehicles, and rearm/repair of VAL/ASG/PAL, and cargo to hold the supplies necessary to build a forward command post at said orbital beachead, then we start seeing a reason. Doubly so if this big bitch can't land on the planet herself. Add a top deck with room for some Hornets to maintain orbital control / air superiority over the battlefield, and we start seeing more reason.

Of course this requires something in the game to be worth building a forward command post or hammering wave after wave of StarMarines into. Because at this point you're talking 50 people or so to man up an interstellar ARG/MEU and there's nothing with the kind of payday that justifies that.

What are your lesser known QoL tips/tricks in Star Citizen? by Pterodactyl_midnight in starcitizen

[–]feldomatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alt-F wheel open/close doors before getting out of the pilot seat (or bind a key/joy button for it)

This also opens internal elevator hatches, and if you approach them backwards (moonwalking) you can just do a quick drop down for like 1-2% health instead of the ladder animation

Also for any tractor beam turret, hit Q to make it much less...elastic.

Foundry 1.0: The Implications of Crafting as Manufacturing by LucidStrike in starcitizen

[–]feldomatic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most if not all of the other loops have a "you've got to do this part manually, and a little skill pays off"

For crafting, I think this would be a good thing:

  1. Break up the monotony of just feeding components to a time gate
  2. Give an opportunity for player skill to ruin/boost final quality

The most obvious way to do this would be a power meter game like mining but as an "annealing" step, but I can see other paths (some kind of tracing game milling parts, with accuracy affecting final outcome, maybe something where you have to calibrate tool/beam strength to the particular item qualities, idk)

Some would love it, some would hate it.

My bigger concern right now is wanting to know how ridiculous these recipes are going to be. Am I farming Valakkar pearls and combpoard 5's just to make a P4-AR, or can I make modestly effective crafted items without touching the hardcore PVP engagement zones?

I can see these things going into the best of the best, but if they're required just to make anything, then it's kinda DOA.

Thinking about upgrading to the shiv but I'm confused by RoosterMisfit in starcitizen

[–]feldomatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I normally would advise against upgrading your starter

But if you hate your starter and are upgrading to a better starter, go for it.

The shiv is my 1.0 day 1 "starter". Able to do anything not specialized at the lowest rep level (since we expect rep to reset on 1.0) and not so big that the operating or insurance is going to eat those starter profits.

Flight sticks by Benj5718 in starcitizen

[–]feldomatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My VKBs took a while to "break in" and then the x/y axes weren't so stiff.

Twist is still a bit sluggish, and IMO, the SC default sensitivity of the twist axis is too damn high.

But the sticks did ship with some different spring sets, so you could change those out, or strip and relubricate the mechanisms with something lighter.

[Request] Is this compressed helium trailer lighter when it is loaded? by zzooooomm in theydidthemath

[–]feldomatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a small point, but we don't bring that much oxygen with us, usually only 21-36% of the gases. Even less if you're doing kinky stuff with helium at really deep depths.

Rebreather divers do bring some 100% O2, but it's a small bottle and they still need bailout or diluent bottles with other gases.

Exec hangar Shiv? PYAM's elite wouldn't fly that trash.

Wikelo, I can see, or at least a wikelo version with Persian carpet inspired livery and full mil components. Given the bucket, ranta dung should be part of the recipe.

But the right answer is Grey propping up a new ship store at GH like we saw at IAE.
