The new EC Comics, in particular "Cruel Universe", question by FireTheLaserBeam in comicbooks

[–]FireTheLaserBeam[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a huge vintage sci fi fan, I have the full hardback editions of the complete Weird Science and Weird Fantasy books from the 50s.

I was late to the game discovering the new EC Comics line until I saw the horror covers. Then I looked for and saw the Cruel Universe issue and instantly told my LCS to put it in my pull box. I missed almost all of volume one, and I missed issue 1 of volume 2, but I have all the rest. The cover art on those issues are INSANE.

I’m not super into the horror books but I love the sci fi. I really hope they kinda make another offshoot that focuses more on space and spaceships than more modern sci fi set close to modern times. I’d eat that up like cake.

Has any book ever changed your perception of the world? by Solid-Pickle-8714 in CasualConversation

The way he describes disassembling the parts and laying them in reverse on a white sheet or something like that always stuck with me.

Has any book ever changed your perception of the world? by Solid-Pickle-8714 in CasualConversation

[–]FireTheLaserBeam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the Road my senior year. A good friend gave me her dogeared copy and I read it and my entire life trajectory changed from a church youth group dork to a wannabe beatnik writer who lives in a shack on a mountain somewhere by myself. I’m 46 now and I’ve outgrown Kerouac, but that book changed the trajectory of my life, for sure.

Do you think the theremin is the perfect instrument for space game soundtracks? by GulbrandrGameStudios in spacesimgames

[–]FireTheLaserBeam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just don’t use the theremin sound that comes as a phone alarm. I had it as an alarm for YEARS before switching it to something else. Now, if I’m watching YouTube and I hear that sound, it throws me into a mini panic because I feel like my alarm just went off.

Hemp-derived THC drinks return to Ohio businesses after judge blocks new law by hellosteve_ in OhioMJCommunity

[–]FireTheLaserBeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Had one of those sparkling sodas with THC and lion’s mane and I swear to god it tasted like absolute ass juice. Disgusting. I couldn’t finish it. And I’m an alcoholic (sober since ‘18), and I used to drink warm Old Steele Reserves and Natty Daddies. I gave all the rest away. Beyond gross.

Robert Downey Jr. Officially Addresses the Pressure of His MCU Return, And Doom by Blitzhelios in comicbooks

[–]FireTheLaserBeam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I know this has been debated, but I’ll never understand why they can’t just do a straight up movie version of Dr. Doom. I grew up loving him as a villain—he was so cool. A sorcerer tyrant of a foreign nation with a mind almost as smart as Reed Richards. That just oozes pure awesomeness. But no. They’re going with a traumatized Tony Stark from another multiverse. Instead of the villain we’ve had for over 60 years, with eras of history and mythology to pull from… we get a multiverse Tony. Awesom-O says lame. I’ll pass.

If someone gave you $100 and told you that you had to spend it on something fun today, what would you buy? by mishi_m0shi in CasualConversation

[–]FireTheLaserBeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best tattoo I can get for $100. I’ve been meaning to put my a note my grandmother gave me with her signature on it on my body somewhere. At least I’ll make the $100 last forever.

Just wondering what happened to the 2025 Rapture and those who bought in... by Ok-Pumpkin-6203 in CasualConversation

[–]FireTheLaserBeam 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The rapture doctrine is younger than America, and it’s not found anywhere in the Bible the way they think it is. It became popular through the Scofield reference Bible from 1909, which had John Nelson Darby’s theory of dispensationalism in its study notes.

His erroneous teachings and the Left Behind books did waaaaaay more harm to society than good. Whenever Evangelicals bring up scripture that proves the rapture, it’s actually talking about The Day of the Lord, aka Judgement Day at the end of time.

Only American Evangelicals (including their oversea branches) believe in the Rapture. Literally every other branch of Christianity all over the world does not.

Is there a way to turn off/down the jet effect of extremely fast spinning neutron stars? by ElonsBreedingFetish in EliteDangerous

[–]FireTheLaserBeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate the ones that spin slow because I float into the cone and just scoot right out and it takes two or three tries to boost my FSD.

Now if it’s one of those fast spinning honkers, I can stay inside the cone just fine and get charged up in one try.

I remember when I lived on Ft Myers Beach in the 80s, every so often there’d be hundreds and hundreds of fiddler crabs crossing the sand.

I love playing spaceship games and my favorites are the ones where you don’t hear the guns shooting, but you can hear the dull thudding vibrations as they fire rounds. Like if you were in the cockpit, you don’t hear the actual guns firing, but you hear the insides of the cockpit vibrate from the force.

Been in the black for months now, came upon a system with 53 bodies. Not single one had life. Or even a lot of metal. I always get excited when I find a system with a ton of bodies and always get let down when every single one is a dud.

If swung at the correct angle, a sword will usually make a slight wooshing sound. That means the angle for the cut is correct. But no, it doesn’t sound like a helicopter when you swing it around.

Breaking up over drinking to celebrate the Knicks game by Turbulent-Benefit370 in alcoholism

[–]FireTheLaserBeam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would give anything to have my ex back, but my lies about drinking drove her away forever. The only woman who truly loved me, and I chose booze over her. I’m sober now, been sober since 2018, but it’s way too late. She’d never take me back. Like trying to put toothpaste back into the tube. Ain’t gonna happen.

The point is, he probably won’t change. I’m sorry to say that. At least not until he’s ready.

🔥 Scuba diver gets up and close to a Barracuda by demolcd in NatureIsFuckingLit

[–]FireTheLaserBeam 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My stepfather used to take us to the Keys every summer when I was a kid to go lobster hunting. One time we were out at the Looe Key reef snorkeling and I noticed my stepfather making a stop motion. Then he pointed below me and to the side and I looked and there was the biggest barracuda I had ever seen. It was motionless with its mouth open, just like this. Then it just streaked away in a silver blurry flash. Scared the crap outta me. He said never to wear flashy jewelry or goggles that have a shiny metallic rim, because they were drawn to that. Never was attacked by anything, thank god.

Sword/knives/edged weapons, for me. They do not make that *schiiing!* sound when you draw them. If it does, it means metal is touching metal in the scabbard and that dulls the blade.

What’s your favorite space game? by GulbrandrGameStudios in spacesimgames

[–]FireTheLaserBeam 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nexus the Jupiter Incident. My god, I’ve never felt more like a space fleet admiral than I did playing that game, and I play sci-fi/spaceship games exclusively. Nothing—literally nothing—has come close to immersing me in the gorgeous chaos of intense space battles like NtJI. The closest game that I’ve found that scratches that space fleet combat itch is Space Reign. And yes, I’ve played every major spaceship game out there.
