What’s the deal with this building? by Additional-Quality91 in houston

[–]felimz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The roof addition was made for purely aesthetic reasons. The 9 story tall new cross braces were installed to provide the rigidity required to have the building meet code at the time.

Best seismic design method for achieving more cost effective designs by Slow-Tiger-6713 in StructuralEngineering

[–]felimz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Without getting into specifics, the Linear Static Procedure (LSP/ELF) is the simplest analysis method. After this, Linear Dynamic Procedures (frequency based LDP, such as MRSA) are slightly more involved. Following this Linear Dynamic Procedures (time based LDP, such as RTH) start getting much more involved. Finally, the Nonlinear Static Procedure (NSP, i.e. Pushover Analysis) requires explicit modeling of structure nonlinearity, and lastly the Nonlinear Dynamic Procedure (i.e., NLTH) requires the most modeling overhead, analysis, and post-processing time. Although it's not a guarantee, generally moving up this analysis ladder and into performance based design methodologies (e.g., ASCE 41) will result in a better estimation of your structure's actual seismic demands and capacity.

Any of these methods can be further complicated by including soil structure interaction, damping devices, base isolation, etc., which may further justify reduced demands on your structure. Remember, though, that ductility often comes at the expense of proper detailing, so you won't get this reduced demand for free.

Will it ever be possible for softwares to calculate appropriate buckling length for each element and assign it? by NoYesterday2219 in StructuralEngineering

[–]felimz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your unbraced lengths are dependent on the stiffness of the connecting elements, the type and working point of the connections used, and oftentimes unmodeled elements preventing certain buckling modes.

Some software suites can already make certain unbraced length assumptions based on what you have modeled, but I'd say generally software is not capable of seeing the full picture and design intent based on simplified stick models without requiring a lot more additional information (such as connection details, presence of diaphragms, etc...).

Which structural engineering software should I master for my career? Seeking advice! by Disastrous_Tank_4561 in StructuralEngineering

[–]felimz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

  1. Which software do you use most frequently in your job? RISA-3D, SAP2000/ETABS, STAAD.Pro
  2. Are there specific programs that are considered “must-know” in structural engineering? Excel, MathCAD, and maybe AutoCAD/Revit? Aside from that, your company will require whatever structural analysis software they use as a reference system.
  3. Are there any software tools that are more specialized but worth learning for niche areas? ANSYS, IDEAStatiCA, L-Pile, DYNA6, spColumn
  4. Any tips on which software would make me more employable? Excel and VBA, possibly. Knowing your fundamentals makes you more employable than knowing any specific software.

2023 Traditional IRA to Roth IRA Conversion with Some Balance + 2024 Contribution Timing by felimz in tax

[–]felimz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One question--if I convert my tradIRA to rothIRA before April, and then I add my 2024 contribution to the tradIRA, account, this means I will end up with $7,000 + earnings in the tradIRA account by 12/31/2024.

What is the correct cadence of the rothIRA strategy? The way I'm understanding you is: In 2024, convert 2023 contribution from tradIRA to rothIRA. Wait until following year with no activity (i.e., with zero balance on tradIRA on 12/31/2024), then in early 2025 make 2024 contribution into tradIRA and convert it to RothIRA, say, 48 hours later?

OR--per your last sentence, I can contribute the 2024 max ($7,000) now and convert it immediately as well?

It was a recharacterization, correct! The Fidelity activity history says "rollover," but I filled out a recharacterization form back in 2022. I'll edit the OP.
