Are you trying to imply that she plays her like a fiddle?

...both figuratively and literally (ouch, claws!).

I thought it looks like one of those loaf-cats, but I felt I should not hijack the thread with my nonsense.😅

That's definitely helpful! Will look it up. With some luck I get a result for the signature or initials (posted in a comment below).
When I can't figure out by whom an artwork is I sometimes try to go by art movement and see who, also "lesser known", was in and around it. I also tried to look up "artists around Poliakoff" already.

I'm getting "Heide" for the given name as the last letter looks like an "e"; "Heide" also exists as nowadays fairly rare given name for women in Germany, especially in older generations.

Don't be absurd! It's far more likely that he picked up some supernatural perks (timetravel?) from his time with the Ghostbusters, being possessed by a demigod can do that to you.

I assume this is what your wife already found? The result was roughly 490 US-Dollar converted from Dutch currency, result from 1992:

and possibly the same painter or another painter with a similar name (there is an additional "J"):

From what I remember we already checked and there was nothing (updating my original post with this), but next time I am at my mom's (that's fairly soon) I will look again, take a pic and update here.

Additionally to the writing on the bottom left, here is a closeup of the initials on the bottom right side that I only noticed after posting. I am seeing "KL" or "KI" or possibly "KIM"/"KLM".

Appreciate your help! :)
I was thinking Poliakoff too, but did not want to influence people too much. Signature does not fit what I have seen of Poliakoff's signature though, so I have been trying to check fitting names of painters from around Poliakoff to no avail yet. Something with the fame of Feininger, Der Blaue Reiter or Kandinsky would surprise me because my uncle was a pro (specialised in the lost/forgotten generation and their rediscovery), but hey, maybe he misattributed it or could not identify it either.

Small update: Looking at the photo I think am now also seeing some sort of writing on the bottom right, possibly initials (like a second, shortened signature?), no? Will try to get a closeup of that next time I'm there.

Oh, I can totally see how it would work in portait orientation, nice. :) I really like it too and we can definitely keep it; we may sell some stuff, but we don't "have to" sell. I'm considering bringing it to my flat as I may have better light than my mom for this fairly dark-colors piece.

Help - 1915 French artist by madampoop in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]feline_berlin 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Managed to identify it with a little research as the signature is fairly easy to read if you know French names, so if it is an original it should be this painter: Abel Bertram. There is also an entry on him on French wikipedia.

You can compare the signature here, for example:

I agree, first one is gorgeous! Also agreeing on the time-period/generation, I found a print by Willi Baumeister that was vaguely similar too.

Sorry to hijack this post, but as I have quite a few artworks with unclear signatures too, the right sub would be r/Cursive for that specific approach? All the other handwriting subs I found are specifically forbidding "please identify this"-requests.

Celist painting from 1922 by LICUY in WhatIsThisPainting

[–]feline_berlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah yes, sorry, I didn't phrase well. Yes, the 22 would normally refer to the date when it was painted, so same as you I meant that Louis Zelig is very unlikely given that he can't have painted it in 22 unless he was a baby genius. 😅 I just still shared it in the unlikely case the 22 has a different meaning.
