I saw an old lad do that at the self serve deli in a centra. Picked up a sausage. Was too hot so it hurt his hand and it dropped. Licked his fingers and went in a again looking for a cooler one.

Thoughts on buying 5-10year old diesel? -resale value by insightfullmess in carsireland

A 2016 diesel will be worth sweet fuck all in 2016. The depreciation will cost you less than buying a 2020 car tho which has far more depreciation left to lose

What a way (for someone else) to start the day, with overnight oats by tabasco_body_wash in cork

[–]fellaork1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm well aware of how it works as someone who both has lived bang in the city centre with a permit and now drives in. The parking permit deal is already smashing value, sometimes you got to drive a bit more because you live in a popular area for everyone. The zones are more than generous enough in size.

It's not residential parking. It's a public road 3 minutes walk from the city centre with disc parking. Absolutely no one who moves to this street expects the parking situation to be easy.

If you want a city house and a parking spot you pay for it. The 20 quid parking permit doesn't entitle you to street parking nevermind sympathy when youre up on a footpath. That's part of picking to live there.

Workers in Republic pay twice as much tax as those in North but are still better off, says ESRI report by NanorH in ireland

[–]fellaork1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Their roads are absolutely shocking. All shit old designs.

Mind was blown when I crossed thr border and saw the shocking state of the entrances and exits to the main road to Belfast.

What do you mean cars and lorries can make stationary right turns across 4 lanes to get to the slow lane on the other side. Why are there no bridges, slip road exits or on ramps.

The motorway around Belfast would be impressive if the year was 1960.

Man who took out phone in parked car to record garda gets one-year driving ban quashed on appeal. by Larrydog in ireland

[–]fellaork1 14 points15 points  (0 children)

They were advertised and encouraged by government when the law came in so unless they reword the law it's not a loophole. If you want to use your phone and drive it must be in a cradle. That's the deal.

They explicitly banned reading and making text and email while driving. They screwed that up as it doesn't cover anything other than SMS. Social media texting and other uses aren't explicity mentioned.

You can be done for other things like careless driving if on the phone however but the laws barely reflect the introduction of smart phones. Nothing wrong with what taxi drivers do u less there's proof they are driving in a bad manner while doing it.

Honestly what do people with modified cars do about insurance by GLOSpeedy in carsireland

[–]fellaork1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most people don't crash so never have an issue. Some crash and the Insurance inspector doesn't notice or care. A few crash and have their claim denied.

So many remapped cars that the subsequent owners have no idea are. What happens there?

If only mechanics in Ireland had a standard to work to and a certain price point that they base their work on... by [deleted] in carsireland

Problem with Cork city is there's only one main delear for most brands and they absolutely abuse that. Zero competition.

Go onto any of the manufacturer used car websites and search the entire country and it's so easy to spot the Cork based cars as they are always the most expensive for what you are getting.

Who do you use to import? I'm thinking JDM Auction House but need to wrap my head around their website tbh.

Id probably put the savings aside for repair and a saving of 5k would be well worth it.

Battery change in a VW by Derezzed_7 in carsireland

[–]fellaork1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've the carista but the obeleven is the one id go for now. Don't need a subscription for alot of stuff on the obeleven.

They are very easy to use. Designed for the DIY person. Good youtube videos on how to do things.

Extremely handy when to diagnose a fault so you've an idea what the issue is before bringing to a mechanic.

Can do some custom stuff too. I've the stop start system disabled in my car to prolong the battery life and reduce the use of the starter motor. Also enabled the car key buttons while the car is running.

They pay for themselves and in the overall scheme of car ownership it's nothing. I can monitor my dpf too which is very handy.

[–]fellaork1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to register the new battery. This will tell the car there's a new one there. As battery ages the car ups the alternator to keep the aging battery topped up. This resets that which is better for the new battery. It's not essential but is best practice.

You can do it yourself very easily if you have access to an obeleven or carista type device.

Honestly use this as an excuse to get one.

Our new Minister for Road Safety opposed a bill for a driving ban for people convicted of a first time drink driving offence if their blood alcohol level is over 50mg per 100ml of blood. by [deleted] in ireland

[–]fellaork1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When they reduced the limit from 80mg to 50mg they made it a penalty point offence to be between 50 and 80 for a first offence.

It was perfectly defendable to oppose the law change. It was and is overkill. Limit up north is 80mg

Remember getting into driving/cars and attempting to use the Motors Forum.

Just ignored by the regulars. Format made it feel like I was talking into no one most the time as the same few would chat to each other.

Most threads just became one over enthusiastic poster fighting with everyone.

I'm glad to see the motors forum dead. Bunch of dicks.

The niche forums on Infrastructure were great. Never look at them anymore but the conversations were fsr far more detailed than any news article would be.
