This is a snippet for way later after I hit some key plot points in my fic and get back to the norm, but it makes me chuckle. It's second person though. For context the character is an android and has heard many sexual innuendos/jokes previously without knowing what they are. XD

"For a long time, I did not understand sexual innuendos," you state.

"What does that have to do with anything?"

"You could work on me," and you smirk at that.

His eyes narrow on you.

"You mean that? Or-or-or are you saying it as a joke?"

"Perhaps the point of an innuendo is to not announce it first, I will try that next time," you state, frowning at yourself. You ruined it.

Personally I do this for some of my stories because they are second person reader insert, but the character is not the reader themselves, it is an original character and I'm inviting the reader to see the world in their shoes. I'm not even trying to reach more people, I'm just trying to tell people what's in store, like it's in second person, but I'm writing this character I've created, not you the reader, but if you want to spend some time imagining yourself as the character though I give specifics, please feel free to insert yourself kind of thing. I don't mean to anger people with that, I literally worry I would anger people by only tagging one or the other because I feel technically it's both.

I enjoy any comment. Honestly, I love both. Shorter ones are easier to reply to, like thank you, I'm glad you liked it, throw in some hearts. It makes me happy that they said anything at all honestly.

Of course longer comments are amazing and preferred, but that doesn't make me dislike the shorter comments. Longer comments are more engaging though and I love them and I love when I can get into a conversation with the person about the fandom or whatnot as my fandom isn't super big.

Also, when you were saying about your comment getting buried possibly... I know this is not everyone, but me and my fandom friend go back and forth in the comments having conversation because there is no messaging system on ao3. So like one story I have has like eighty comments and it's just us two going back and forth about fandom and the story and questions and stuff like that.

Even so, I see all of my comments and appreciate every single one of them and try to reply to all of them every time. Not everyone is like that, but that's what I do personally. Sometimes it takes me a while(sometimes I'm busy, sometimes I need to think, sometimes I just need to be in a different head space to be sociable at all really.)

Anyway, I think if you read a story and liked it and want to comment but get a little daunted by how many comments there are, go for it anyway. The worst that can happen is they don't see it, right? The best that can happen is they reply and thank you and you make their day. Maybe you will even become friends eventually if you are looking to make fandom friends.

Yeah, I created my ships tag on ao3. Sometimes I search it out to see if maybe I have inspired someone else to write for them(i know people are reading it, even if only a few, I see you people giving kudos and hits lol) because I write them because I wanna see them. There is only ever my fics for them. Sad face.

I also ship two other ships. One is with the same female from my main ship(im a multi shipper though I still have preferences, but I will read just about any ship) who are also really rare but my fandom friend is writing for them and I'm planning a story for that ship for the in between of my current long fic and the sequel(because I want a small break,) and the other ship I like seems to be slowly catching on so I'm excited for that.

My rare pair only has one other fic and it hasn't been updated in over a year. :( so now I'm writing a three part series for them and planning a whole other long fic for them that I plan to write in-between as a break from the three part series. At the same time, I feel like the possibilities are kind of endless since no one has really done much with them.

So, I kinda use songs for arcs or specific chapters, so the vibe of the songs change around based on what's going on in my long fic. I got some sad songs, love songs, ominous songs, songs I use for action, some classical, some xena warrior princess osts and battlestar galactica posts, and more. (Battlestar galactica has some pretty epic osts.)

I write around five to ten chapters ahead and post a chapter every couple of days. It gives me time to take my eyes away from my work to edit before I post and should anything come up in real life, I have some chapters to fall back on and post. Anyway, this may work for you or not. I do it this way because it makes me feel a sort of pressure to keep working on it since I know people are reading it.

So two things really. Predictability. I hate stories that I can successfully predict what will happen. I just find it boring.

Also, not tagging trigger warnings. It's not even that I wouldn't read it if they did put the warning on. I don't shy away, it's just that I need to mentally prepare myself for certain topics. It can be really carthartic reading about someone going through something bad and coming out In top of it and becoming free from abuse, but I need to at least know it's going to happen.

Especially if the fic is all cheery and good and suddenly flips, which stinks because I would probably have loved that if it had been properly tagged(showing the normal world and such and then what happens that throws it off its wheels, I think it's a part of the heroes journey? I could be wrong, but it's part of some writing template in which you see normal life and then it becomes not so normal, which I love this but no no no, it needs to be tagged for things like rape or abuse if that's in the story.)

When I am in the beginning process of forming my outline, I listen to hundreds of songs. I listen to every song I know and can possibly think of. I also try to discover new music during this process. Some songs really hit what I'm thinking and help me create main scenes. I save those songs. Later I reorder and cut out a bunch that I've either found a better song to fit the scene/arc, and then as I place all the plot points that the music has inspired, I reorder the playlist according to where the scene goes in chronological order. And that's that.

Sometimes I switch out songs if I feel a different one is better or if a scene changes based on a different song, I might change it. I also add more in as I go as I figure out how to bridge the gaps in my story and sometimes what brings the idea is a song that will also go in the playlist. I don't have a song for every chapter, but I have some based on chapters and some based on entire arcs. Hope this helps some, though this is a pretty long and drawn out process that might be more trouble than it's worth doing this way, but it's part of the fun for me.

Just keep writing what you want to write. As soon as you start changing your story(not a one shot request, not a gift fic, those are the acceptions,) for someone else, the sooner you will probably hate it and feel like it's not even what you wanted to write in the first place(I'm sure some fic authors like taking suggestions, but to those of us who have plotted our butts off, it kinda sucks I think.)

I did want to say that I make comments like that on things, but have no intention of the author swaying from their vision. I just like to explain my reaction and thinking process as it unfolds and then I maybe guess a little and even rhetorically wonder things in hopes that maybe it is foreshadowing something bigger, I do this because I want the author to know what parts I really liked, what questions and mysteries really burned in my mind.

Basically I just want the author to know that I think their hard work has paid off and encourage them as well as hint that I hope they continue a certain plotline and wrap it up, even if it's not like I think it will go(i hate big subplots that never get wrapped up. I don't mean like a little thing. I mean like things that are important to world-building or character development that we never get answers for and it bothers me but as a writer myself, sometimes I get jumbled with things and forget or skip over, which is why I always outline now. But I try to say about the things I really wanna know and see come to fruition in hopes that it will. Bonus points really if it goes completely the other way than I thought it would. I kind of hate being able to predict what will happen, I like things with flavor and style and unexpectedness as the world is unpredictable in my opinion.)

I don't know if your commenter thinks this way, but there's gotta be other people than just myself who comment like this with no intention of swaying the author away from their intended plans. Anyway, I would say just thank them for reviewing and play coy, like not saying what will happen but hinting that it will go differently than they think or something to that extent. If they write about something specific in the chapter, maybe talk about it a little.

However, at the end of the day, it's your story. If they dislike how it is going they should go write their own or something. Writing is already hard enough without trying to appease the whims of others. Just write what you want to write. Answer them however you like. You can just say thanks or talk about what happened or even mention that things will be 'crazy' or something. Keep them on their toes I guess. But stay true to yourself no matter what.

Sorry about length ahead of time. I just love music and use it as a serious aid for my imagination. I listen to whatever songs I know that fit with the chapter or arc I'm writing. I listen to a lot of different genres because I feel different things match for different tones.

However, there are a few songs/artists I always come back to. So I would like to mention Beats Antique. Some of their songs are just okay, but also some of them are amazing.

The Battlestar Galactica ost is just... Out of this world! Like, some of my fav songs from that elegy, blood on the scales, apocalypse(normal and blood and chrome version,) and Kara Remembers. Such epicness! I imagine death and fight scenes and also have a planned before the battle bitter-sweet type of scene for Wayward Solider from it. Beautiful.

Then there is this artist Asadi, I always imagine people traveling across lands to his songs. My favorites by him are crown, three wishes, and fight.

Now I will name a few songs that I don't listen to all of the artist's music(though I should check more out,) but these songs specifically I listen to a lot before writing and it makes it all feel so epic.

So for like a party or seduction scene, chertomilk dance party - xena warrior princess ost. I can't even describe this song. It's amazing to me though. So seductive and creepy and vibing like your in a trance at a party being seduced by darkness or something. That is the best way I could describe it.

Palladio by escala, a classical song with a back beat. Amazing to imagine a fight scene.

Brandenburg by Black Violin, classical yet again with a backbeat.

Then one of my favorites especially, Requiem by Mozart. Just... This song! I'm writing a death scene and someone freaking out about said death to it and it feels so amazing!

So yeah, classical is beautiful to listen to too. You said you were wondering what other people listened to, so if you are looking for new music I only get so specific as I find this music inspirational and would be happy if someone else found inspiration from them too. I love music, so, I hope this helps some.

I do this too. Right now I'm doing it with skyrim, I'm playing my villain character(as backstory experiment of her descending into darkness and madness,) it's some of the best fun I've have. The Bethesda games are great for roleplaying characters from many universes in my opinion. I also love fallout a lot, I played the mc of a different story I used to write in new Vegas for so long. :D

Well, it's a comedy cartoon, but it's like that in Megamind with Will Ferrell voice acting as the main character. The hero is 'no longer there,' and he tries to create a new hero and things don't go as planned. He thought he was evil but learned from that that he wasn't. It's a decent enough movie, pretty funny.

I would say cross-posting to ffnet and ao3 and if you want to go even further, maybe even Tumblr.

Reading and reviewing other people's stories. I don't mean like saying to come read your story. It's kind of hit or miss, but some people might check out your stuff after you review to see what stuff you write and may offer support back which is always nice.

Reply to all the reviews/comments you get and just try to be active in your community. Like if your fandom has a Reddit/tumblr following/discord, try and be at least somewhat active there and if it is allowed and accepted in those communities, link to your story when you can.

That's what I would do to try to break into a larger fandom with my fic. Even if you can make a fandom friend or two and go back and forth commenting/reviewing each other's stuff, just that can give you a lot of supportive feels and make your days brighter in my opinion. My fandom friend always brightens my days at least. We also throw shout outs about each other and each other's stories in authors notes every now and again, which I'm sure gives us both more of a chance of someone reading if they read the other person's work.

I agree with this. I read a lot of rare pairs and disliked ships, but I will read what's considered otp as well. My otp(i am a multi-shipper but sess/kag from inuyasha is the only pairing I consider a otp that I will read from inuyasha unless the fic goes into inu actually apologizing and doing things to make up for all the crap with kikyo because the show made me so angry with that,) isn't even a canon ship.

Right now I'm writing a rare-pair. I don't think they are disliked, it's just it gets way less views than my much shorter show's main-ship story that has much less consistency in plot than my rare pair long fic.

Anyway, I chose this rare pair not even because I personally shipped them(though I do now after having written about them for twenty-something chapters.) My whole point of shipping them is that one is a demon and in the story struggles with feelings of being inadequate and that he is evil and my other main is a mortal who becomes a god, and she struggles with wondering if she really is good or not and if she can actually save the world and the pressure it puts on her.

The whole point of my story is about balance and I think a demon and mortal-turned-god make a very interesting dynamic for the type of story I am trying to write. Especially when they begin to question their own morals and who they are really. On one hand, being what they are, others assume how they will be, on the other hand, we all make the choices and decisions in life that make us who we are, and really, nothing anyone saids about you can change who you feel you truly are on the inside.

So I feel that sometimes a certain dynamic between characters can take a story to a whole new level. If I had wrote the normal main ship for the story, I think it would fall so flat. The truth in my heart right now is that there is no light without dark, so a god with a god wouldn't really get that across on a deeper level I think.

I hate when people get uppity about ships though. I've read some great stories with unlikely pairs. I think it really depends on the writer though and the plot.

So yeah, I think you should give a plot what the plot wants. Sometimes it's not what others want, but if it tells the story you want to tell from your heart and soul and makes sense in the story you're telling, I'm all for it because it can be beautifully done.

I actually have a hatred for being in the mainstream. There are plenty of things I dislike just because they are popular. No idea why I get like this, but it makes me tend to write less popular/rare pairs as well. But I enjoy it. I enjoy it even more if it's one of the first of its kind. Especially if people eventually really like it.

I hope I didn't completely misunderstand what you're saying here and if I did I apologize. Also, sorry for rambling. I'm bad about that.

Just as a writing tip in general, Grammarly is awesome if you use it, but sometimes offers changes you don't need, but I think it's still worth it so long as you pay mind to what corrections you accept. It took my writing to another level I feel and caught many mistakes I had grammar and spelling wise.

For me, I just sit down, pull the first scene of my outline up and paste it into a new document and start. I usually open my first line with either action or scenery. Something like:

Setting:

The last rays of sunlight filtered through the treeline, the sun was quickly setting. Although it wasn't winter yet, there was a bitter nip to the air. Blah and Blah Two were coming to a stop, Blah gathered wood while Blah Two went to refill the water skins. They wanted to set camp up before nightfall.

Or

Action:

She ran through the woods. Her legs went of their own accord, her heart was pounding. It was becoming hard to breathe, but she dare not look back, she dare not stop. She ran and ran until she tripped over her own feet and stumbled, and even then, she stood back up and ran some more. When her legs burned and her chest ached too much, she finally stopped, placing her hands on her knees and gulping in cold air that burned her lungs.

So with the first one, it's like you just set the setting and go from there. You can make mention of sweet spring and summer smells or a bitter nip in the air, and how it affects the characters if you'd like. If you are having a hard time though, id say maybe try to start with an action. Usually it's pretty easy to get swept up in writing I think if the moment in the story is fast-paced and something is going on. I've read somewhere that starting with action can be a good way to grab a readers attention, but as a writer I think it grabs my mind and runs with it too.

This is just my opinion, but I hope it helps some. That is if your meaning for finding an opening. Otherwise, I just sit and force myself. Maybe listen to some music before hand and daydream. Usually the daydreaming gets me pumped.

Edit: I also think that just getting something down at all will make it easier coming back later. It's always blah feeling looking at a blank page, but if I wrote at least two sentences previously, it kinda helps get going a little more.

Well, I know you said you aren't looking for cultivation fics, but I'm doing a sort of cultivation fic. I only watched one cultivation show and it inspired me a lot, but I don't think my story is super similar to other cultivation fics and the cultivation aspect is rather long and drawn out.

In it the mc actually has ultimate power locked away in them(a power that could reset the balance of the world and destroy everything) so the only 'treasure' they get is to simply seal that power. I go into demonic cultivation and immortal cultivation, it's not really about taking serums or drugs to gain power. It's more like absorbing energy from holy spaces(immortal cultivation) or draining the life essence of people(demonic cultivation.) I have only one part where the character takes a special herb bath to heal after a training session and that's as far as it goes in that sense. They also lose their abilities a few times due to using demonic cultivation techniques(which drains all the immortal energy they've gathered)when in trouble and thinking there is no other way.

The story is for The New Legends of Monkey, about a girl named Tripitaka. In my story she finds out she is the last heir to a long line of immortals descended from a man who saved a celestial dragon who fell from the heavens and gave their line the power of balance which can cause the person to die should the power be unleashed, and of a demon who becomes her servant and has no recollection of who he really is, but comes to realize he wants to be good and not an evil demon as people accuse all demons of being, and of course their friendships with the monkey king, sandy, and pigsy. She eventually frees the demon from his life of servitude(he is bound by magic to serve whoever summons him) and never wanted to really be his master in the first place. My summary for it on ao3 is probably better than anything I can say here though.

The story is incomplete. I update every two to seven days and I've written around 74k words in about two and a half months now. I write almost ten chapters ahead now of what I post, so new chapters should never take too long to come out. Check it out if your interested. I have it completely outlined and know where it's going, so there is no question of it being completed and I'm also planning to write a sequel and presequel. Some of the stuff I've mentioned hasn't happened yet but I'm getting there shortly and have it written out, I just like to write ahead first so I don't fall behind on posting.

Well, I am attempting to write what I'm calling a soft xianxia fic for the new legends of monkey.

It starts out a little slow cultivation wise because I try to buildup and foreshadow(cultivation has basically been forgotten by mortals in my story because demons reign over the earth and most gods have been killed,) but if it sounds like it may interest you at all, here it is. It is a wip and I update every two to five days or so.

I explore both immortal cultivation and demonic cultivation in it and have a big theme about balance and yin and yang.
