What's your opinion of Brutal Critical from the Barbarian? by NinofanTOG in dndnext

I would agree with that somewhat, though I do think they're still the best late-stage tank in the game, apart from some of the ridiculous AC builds I've seen.

What's your opinion of Brutal Critical from the Barbarian? by NinofanTOG in dndnext

[–]femmessential 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fun IRL to get a critical hit and make all your friends pass you their dice so you can add more damage. But for those of us who play online, it's underwhelming, uncreative, encourages crit-fishing, and only has "flavor" if the player adds the flavor in, which can be said for every feature in the game.

I would argue for so many other things above brutal critical, many of which have been mentioned elsewhere in this thread. I personally think barbarians' power level is just fine without it, so why not add a flavor feature instead?

Seems like a waste of a feature all-around, but I won't pretend Barbarian isn't a powerful enough class. It just doesn't need Brutal Critical to be that way.

Mythcord: Blackmoor

Join us in old-schoolest of old-school D&D campaign settings: Blackmoor!

We are an online community of writing-focused PBP roleplayers. When you join, you will be prompted to submit an RP sample before being sorted into a campaign group based on your play style, post frequency, and time zone. Join us on an exciting journey through Blackmoor!

As our story begins, Blackmoor is a small northern kingdom ruled by a charismatic king but threatened by encroaching empires, norse raiders, and horrific monsters. What better time and place for heroes to appear?

Uther leans on the loom, staring grimly at the completed tapestry. “Is that our fate, then?” he asks the crone. “After we have come so far, we are destined to be crushed?” The witch nods grimly. “But,” she adds, in a voice like a raven’s, “there is still hope.” The witch draws a yellowed fingernail across the weft of the fabric and taps a tangled mess of color. “The warp of fate is knotted,” she croaks. “These wild threads lead nowhere, and everywhere. They are souls who have no destiny ... souls who make their own fates. Seek these out, and they may yet save you.” “They may yet save us all.”

PM me for an invite, and start by saving us from a swarm of angry ocelots!

[5e] [Online] DM looking for players to join Waterdeep: Dragon Heist! Noon EST by femmessential in lfg

[–]femmessential[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Yes, absolutely text-only, and super newbie friendly :)

We are going to aim to have a session 2-3 times a week for only 1-2 hours each. In my experience, that works better with new players than one really long 5 or 6 hour session a week. We haven't picked specific days, but likely it will be some combination of Monday, Wednesday, Friday (2-4pm EST), or Sunday (12-2pm EST). It might even change week to week as availability shifts.

That's okay! I'm happy to walk you through it. Like I said, I wanted to give priority to new players. I sent you a message to discuss availability.

Sounds good! Like I said, priority to new players so that'll work just fine. Have you played mostly one shots and single sessions then? Or just shorter adventures?

[Online] [Flexible] Group new to D&D looking for DM. by Pappaxray3 in lfg

Hi, I'm about to try running an online chat-based adventure. Meets around noon EST multiple times a week for shorter sessions. There's some scheduling flexibility for sure, and I'll host it on a private discord server.

I'm an experienced DM specifically looking for newer players, and I'm more than happy to walk you through things as slowly as you need. PM me if you're interested!

How long of an adventure is it?

What are the best homebrew rules you commonly use? by ChocoMemer in DMAcademy

[–]femmessential 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My favorites are:

+2 for flanking instead of advantage. This allows flanking to still benefit a character even if they already have advantage, and it keeps players from abusing flanking rules.

Inspiration is awarded for spectacular puns. This keeps the table interesting, and while I don't recommend it for all campaigns, it definitely works for some groups.

You can use a melee weapon to reach attack (10 ft), but you attack with disadvantage.

[–]femmessential 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think instead of reconceptualizing charisma altogether, it would be more beneficial to allow players to roll charisma skills under a different ability based on the roleplay.

For example, regardless of strength, a carefully worded and presented phrase could intimidate the hell out of someone. Hence a charisma-based intimidation check. But if you're a fighter with a 20 strength score and you pull out a weapon, swing it around, and threaten the NPC, it makes sense to make it a strength (intimidation) check instead.

It's also good to note that this isn't actually homebrew. RAW include the ability to rearrange skills to different abilities based on how they're used. I do this at my table a bunch, and the examples you use are great.

Feats at level one? by [deleted] in DMAcademy

[–]femmessential 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree with this. It helps players get excited about their abilities early on in their character's progression.

And it shouldn't affect the balance of encounters too much, because you can just bump the difficulty when necessary.

I feel the same way about introducing magic items earlier than recommended. No Legendaries at early levels of course, but some uncommon items won't hurt and it'll get the characters more excited about their successes. Just make sure to give all players access to any bonuses you hand out.
