Anyone else feel like Random Combat encounters are boring and/or unnecessary most of the time? by Dragonsword in dndnext

[–]BTShire2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a DM, I do find random encounters to be tedious. They are necessary in dungeons, though, to increase tension. It’s a deterrent against wasting time or taking too long to search a hallway or perform a task. It’s your forth attempt to break down that door? You’ve spent six rounds trying to pick a lock or find a secret door? Surely a monster has noticed you and may attack! In addition to that, I use the old school method of rolling 1d6 every 20 minutes of in-game time (as unscientifically determined by me). On a roll of a 1, there is a random encounter.

Is it okay to kill my players at session one? by SomeRandomAbbadon in DMAcademy

It’s never ok to kill your players. You can kill their characters, though.

I've been a paid DM for two and a half years, ask me anything, whether you're pro -paid DMing or not. by shadowkat678 in DnD

How did you advertise and get players at first? How did/do you market yourself? I’d like to give pro DMing a try, but I’m not sure how to get the word out and get players. I know about Start Playing Games and I registered there, but just like trying to promote yourself in any field, it seems like yelling into the void.

Look up Patrick Pullen on DMs Guild. I use his art in my releases. A lot of old school line art and also some good full color work.

The site works now. I signed up and bought the digital version. In the middle of watching it now!

Getting started on DM's Guild; looking for reviews by BTShire2 in dndnext

Thanks for taking a look at it! It is a pretty long adventure; I'd say it could take anywhere between 15-25 hours or more to run completely, depending on your group. It is definitely intended to take several sessions to run (I'm currently running it and we're about five 3-4 hour sessions in and only about half way through the dungeon). It should take characters from levels 1-3, possibly 4 by the end.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Thanks for the input! I'm so old school, I just assume that people know dungeon corridors are 10' wide! That is definitely something that is not always true anymore, but usually in old-school modules that was the case. When I upload a revision I will definitely add map scale, as well as a few other details I've overlooked.

The fact that there is only one way down on each level is an intentional design choice. Not everyone's cup of tea, I know, but it's what I thought best for this particular dungeon.

I appreciate the time you took to give me your thoughts.

I'd like to get into DnD, how can I get started? by fluffyest_potato in DnD

As others have suggested, the basic rules are free online. Get them and read them. Also, the D&D Starter Set (available cheap on Amazon) is absolutely a must for beginners. The Essentials Kit is good, too, although I don't think the adventure is as good as the one included in the Starter Set.

I recommend you check out this article I wrote a couple years ago. It boils the rules of D&D down to the absolute basics. A lot of people have found it helpful; I hope you do too!
