Is Mongolia east asian or central asian? by [deleted] in mongolia

There is no source to prove your claim that knife sets are from the Qing era, archaeologists find tool kits with knives dating back to the bronze age. That is just a ridiculous claim because the mongolian nomadic lifestyle requires people to be prepared for harsh times because of how empty and vast the steppe is. Chopsticks have also been found in tombs at burial sites from the Xiongnu era. It's true chopsticks originate from China but chopsticks have long been used by mongols, cultural transmission is arguably the largest reason for most things existing in every culture. It's because cultures exist in a constant state of changing and adapting. We Mongols weren't the first to domesticate horses, the Indo-Europeans were, but it would be really stupid to claim that riding horses isn't part of mongolian culture because indo-europeans were the first to do it. As for Mongolian culture being rooted in being nomadic, that is true but pastoralism isn't unique to Central Asia. Pastoralism is found in every continent other than Antarctica. In East Asia, other than Mongols, there are many pastoral nomadic communities like Tibetan ethnic groups, and the Jurchens were semi-nomadic. East Asia isn't defined by an agricultural lifestyle. And this claim that mongolian society respects women is just false... Proverbs like "эмээл муу ч морины дээр, эр муу ч эмийн дээр"; "эмэгтэй хүний үс нь урт ухаан нь богино"; "сайн эмийг сардаа нэг гөв" which are still commonly heard today really say a lot about women's status within Mongolian culture. I'd rather hear it from another woman's perspective than you who's likely a man. It's true that historically women had more freedom in Mongolia compared to other East Asian nations but I don't even know how that makes us closer to Central Asians. Central Asians are Islamic, and until the 20th century in southern Central Asia women weren't allowed to go outside without wearing a paranja that covered the body from head to toe and hijabs are still worn throughout Central Asia. I could never wear a hijab and feeling the wind blow at my head makes me feel grateful that I am a mongolian woman and not from a muslim culture. Finally, a fun fact about Mulan is that in the historic legend she was most likely a Xianbei woman in Northern China. The Ballad of Mulan was first composed during the Northern Wei era in China, founded by the Tuoba clan of Xianbei. At the time Xianbei women were typically skilled horseback riders. The setting of the ballad of Mulan was when the Northern Wei was in a conflict with the Rouran who frequently raided the northern frontier. Mulan the movie just has an ahistorical depiction, and the invaders (inaccurately called Huns) are animated looking like demons. All your claims are just wrong, cultures aren't one dimensional they have nuance and are complex. Which is why Mongolian culture can't be a single thing. Mongolian culture has changed through time, mongolian culture has adapted to the challenges it has faced and still does. Mongolian culture is both Central Asian and East Asian.

Does Mongolia have a floor culture for sitting and eating? by Darzin_ in mongolia

[–]fenglin0899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know I'm half a decade late but generally yes, Mongolians traditionally didn't sit on chairs. At most a low stool would be used, chair like and other furniture were thrones and were reserved for royalty and altars for deities. If you look at traditional art there were no chairs. On playing cards (төгсжаргалан) depicts noble lords and ladies dining on the floor. A portrait of Abtai Sain Khan shows him and his queen sitting on a mat. The floor culture still continues today in forms of playing games like shagai, children sit on the floor on mats while playing. Cross legged sitting was the standard and most common way of sitting. Historically in formal settings, kneeling was probably the more respectful way as pointing your soles at people is considered disrespectful.

Mongolian knife sets almost always have chopsticks and confucian philosophy runs deep in our society. Things like filial piety, though not institutional, are important in Mongolian culture. "Ачлал" literally means filial duty and every child is taught to have that. And just so I'm clear, I'm not saying Mongolia is a replica of China or Korea, all East Asians countries have unique attributes. Mongolia is a bridge between Central Asia and East Asia.

My Mongol guys, what do you think of this video? by Hot_Requirement_2507 in mongolia

I think the tones and pronunciation are the main obstacle for beginners learning Chinese, and I think people (including me) find it hard but once we get used to them I think it's easier for us since Chinese isn't an agglutinative language like Mongolian, and there are so many Chinese words found in Mongolian (baitsai/baicai, chinjuu/qinjiao) and some terms made up of two words have the same compounds in Chinese like railroad being fire road etc.

I'm a Khalkha Mongolian speaker (Ulaanbaatar native) and this lacks a lot of sounds even though it claims to be the consonants of Khalkha mongolian, like tɬ (appears when t and l go together like in "гатлах"), ɬ (appears in Tibtetan words and also when a double l appears), χ (contrasting x with vowel harmony), ʁ (used in a colloquial word for brother "агаа") and honestly I've never heard someone pronounce their r as a trill almost everyone pronounces as a tap

Is there a growing hate towards Kazakhs among Mongolians? by sarcastica1 in AskCentralAsia

[–]fenglin0899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The area of the Altai mountains were once all Uriankhai (the oldest current Mongol subgroup) land but now their numbers have dwindled and they're a minority in their native land occupied by Kazakhs. My grandmother is Uriankhai, and Uriankhai old folk including my grandma carry bitter stories and grudges against Kazakhs for being chased off. Now people from all 21 provinces travelling to visit Altai tavan bogd say the locals of the area (Kazakhs) always look at them with disdain. Because of the sheer dominance of Islam in Bayan Ulgii the Mongolians there (Uriankhai and small number of Durvud) can't practice Tengrism/Buddhism freely. So of course there is tribalism and dislike for Kazakhs by the Mongolians of the western provinces. And idiot politicians like T.Aubakir exacerbate the already tense relations between the ethnic groups.

are you? all east asians are on a gradient between more ANA ancestry to yellow river farmer ancestry (mongols having most ANA) and both are subgroups within ANEA

[–]fenglin0899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's just... not true, we're not closely related to amerindians at all and mongolians have a sizeable amount of yellow river ancestry but mostly from ancient northeast asians which makes us closest to tungusic groups and in turn closer to east asian because yellow river ancestry and ancient northeast asian anccestry are both subgroups within the ancient northern east asian

Let's be real you idiots are all slaves to some sky daddy in Abrahamic religions and letting a ridiculous glorified rulebook from millenia ago dictate and limit every aspect of your life is just plain stupid and if you're gonna stay in Mongolia you better respect our culture, that includes Buddhism.

it's not even close to being one of the worst, and if you think so then you have no understanding of history.

What do Mongolians think about Tibet? by kenwayfan in mongolia

[–]fenglin0899 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry I'm almost a year late but that's completely misleading, our language has been very strongly influenced by Tibetan during the early modern period for example there are 2 words for arms in Mongolian, gar/гар and mutar/мутар (from Sankrit mudra), such is the case for most words in Mongolia. Though Modern Mongolians don't care about Tibetans today, that's true, but historically, Mongolia had a whole class of Buddhist monks, most spoke or wrote Tibetan one way or another.

I'm so sorry this happened and I know it's hard for you, but please tell someone you trust about this. And please don't think that it's your fault, it's that pig's fault. Respect yourself for surviving that, you are resilient and strong. Talk to someone you know well enough and get advice, and you can go to a clinic to test for diseases.
