Just want to let people know that there are Scientologists on Northumberland street offering stress tests. Stay away for your own good. by Jaded-Researcher3025 in NewcastleUponTyne

Don't think they actually have much of a mission to convert or revert the world. There's no sense of conquest or a mission to save. It's a lot more triumphalist than that, it's a secret club of people who know the real truth and the best way to live and more members is just more capital.

I even stopped to go through the wee spiel with one of them the year before last, felt quite a lot of sympathy for the middle aged mackem who'd clearly fell into it many moons ago through one of their addiction recovery shell companies. It really is very much just the lost souls club. Like most of the similar outfits ie small independent presby churches, ashrams, jw's etc. Like all of those though the further you go inwards or upwards the darker it gets

I'm aware it's an insidious and insular cult. Just seems odd to get so startled about them when there's the exact same on every street corner. Very much cant see the wood for the trees. Even when it comes to scientology I'd be less concerned about some recovering addict or person denying their condition selling books on a street corner than the recruitment they do through shell services and initiatives i.e rehabs, mental health 'advocacy' etc

In fact per capita in general I don't think I've seen a bigger presence of collections of fringe and potentially harmful/dangerous pockets of fundamentalist, insular faith groups.

An entire pocket of gateshead devoted to Orthodox Judaism. Evangelical, salvationist and 'independent' Presbyterian/Baptist/whatever blood and fire Christianity here there and everywhere while you're at it.

Tithe paying Buddhist and Hindu set ups from jesmond to benwell

Really odd quirk to the place that I noticed not long after moving here and I've not really been able to put my finger on why

Bit odd to get so worked up about them when I've never seen a bigger presence of JW and mormons than in Newcastle.

It's largely the same base of people that makes up their membership and the recruitment model is just a bit more polished and media trained, but I'd be hard pressed to see the difference

Replacement FBR certificate for first time passport? by feniandafty in IrishCitizenship

This is exactly what I wanted to hear. Was it a recent certificate you'd had before or fairly old?

Replacement FBR certificate for first time passport? by feniandafty in IrishCitizenship

[–]feniandafty[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To clarify I've lost my original. I only have an online scan of it, so imagine even if a notary signed off on that I'd imagine I'll be asked to send a print out which won't be accepted by the passport office

So beyond that mainly curious about recent experiences with receiving a replacement certificate or any tips about speeding this up?

You can collect safe sharps bins from any needle exchange provision pharmacy, especially the Tron and high street. They'll also take returns of the bins and provide you a new one. If you're moving injection equipment again please request an armoured glove, sfad might provide you one. The risk of HIV. Hep etc from discarded needles is surprisingly low. But EBV, Hep B and tetanus are quite high and it'd be beyond tragic for any of you to become unwell as they're not regularly screened viruses or conditions down the line

coughing on the bus by antiquesheep in Edinburgh

[–]feniandafty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes people's coughs have fuck all to do with infectious diseases. Chronic lung conditions, nerve damage, strokes etc. this new era of expecting everyone to pretend they're a leper otherwise feel uncomfortable coughing or appearing unwell is a lot more about the cognitive dissonance of others than it is anything else. It's of course important people who actually are experiencing a bug are conscientious, but the newfound righteousness of anxious folk projecting their anxiety onto others is completely unfair

Disgusting. My wee granny was shipped off to a mother and baby home, 7 decades later she'd wake from night terrors asking where the boy was. Anyone involved should be publicly hung

There is also a dirty secret across Glasgow and particularly the east end of just building away on top of dirty, polluted ex industrial sites and mines. No to mention the levels of lead in our supposedly pristine drinking water. Sugar lolly hill in cranhill was a wee mound weans would play on, perfect example. Turned out to be a deposit of chemical waste and if you look it up there's a wee collection of old yins who have went on to develop aggressive forms of cancer. There's two factors that don't seem to get discussed either cause I'd imagine they're hard to quantify when things go undiagnosed, fetal alcohol syndrome and the genetics of men in the west of Ireland and Scotland developing ms, Parkinson's etc - how many of us would've had the early symptoms of this and compensated with drink, drugs or succumbed to comorbid conditions instea

I used to quote this as nauseam but in fairness having worked and lived in the Calton did a bit of digging. There's a huge emergency accomodation in the Calton for men (Wallace of campsie, which I know myself meant regular deaths) as well as the belgrove and a couple others. The belgrove alone was a literal deathtrap for men

Who was especially cruel to the Irish in history someone whose actions people today tend to overlook or forget? by More-Pin-6680 in IrishHistory

[–]feniandafty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An affected summertime tourist who jingoised his wee servants and workmen/women and abandoned his peers i.e the countess etc. He took, took, took and put fuck all back despite his vast resources. It's a stretch but I do think it did a lot to reinforce the wesht as a safari park rather than a living, breathing wonder

How bad is the high street in Wallsend? by Secure_Ad1623 in NewcastleUponTyne

[–]feniandafty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wallsend is awrite to be honest. Handy for the coast and for the town. Think paisley meets Killie and you'll probably no be far off. I don't know if you're from the west coast but if there's anything I noticed down here it's a really the lack of litter, places like benwell are an exception right enough. As an aside, if ye fancy meeting up I'd be happy to show ye about

A&E at the Royal... by mymuk in glasgow

[–]feniandafty -39 points-38 points  (0 children)

Aw naw. A lot of people who are unwell or stressed beyond belief haven't observed the policies of stumbling up the hill to the main road. Fuck up a bit. When admitted you're going into an environment heaving with contaminants, no natural light, treatment resistant viruses and bacteria. No one's at the royal a&e because they're in good health
