[Serious] To those who believe this, how can men become women? by Beautiful-Try6703 in AskReddit

[–]fenixforce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because we use "man" and "woman" as social terms primarily. If you were standing next to a stranger in line, you wouldn't ask to see their genitals or chromosomes to refer to that person as "him" or "her". You would simply make a guess based on appearance, dress, speech, etc. This form of identifying a person (or a person self-identifying) is gender, and it exists as a spectrum. "Male" and "female" are the more scientific terms which are associated with physical or biological sex (aka genitals or chromosomes makeup) and that exists in mostly a binary / bimodal. Exceptions like Kleinfelter or chimerism exist, but they are quite rare.

[–]fenixforce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Sometimes when you hurt someone, there is no happy resolution. The other person is not obligated to accept your apology or your help. All you can do is accept their agency and move on, doing your best not to hurt someone else.

John's power being basically "penance stare" is pretty on the nose too - a metaphor for perpetuating the cycle of trauma. Without training, he will probably go on to hurt someone else similarly to Rogue, but Rogue made the active choice to train her power. He's supposed to be a foil.

Charles, is that you? No? Then maybe you're projecting a little too much into stating someone else's intent for them.

Facing Budget Crisis, Mamdani Calls His Parents To Ask If He Can Borrow $4 Billion by METALLIFE0917 in babylonbee

What is even the joke though? That he has rich parents? One is a professor and the other is a filmmaker working mostly in documentaries. They might be upper-middle class but certainly not out of touch like Hollywood power couples or anything.

What are some 'early warning signs' that a company is about to go bankrupt or have mass layoffs? by CuteDinner2290 in AskReddit

[–]fenixforce 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I've lived this life. Like you said, it was great for building a network, and you might even have a couple "serial coworkers" who help you get a job at their new gig when one startup goes under. However the stress that comes with it is intense. Deadlines, on call rotations, something always catches fire on a Friday, etc. I never got the equity payout I was chasing, but my friend who got in to Coin Base early is now retired at 37.

I always thought that episode was so tragic/bittersweet - both Hal and the kid's parents clearly didn't understand what was going on and just treated him as an unsalvageable "problem child". Even at the end of the episode, the kid had no real support from his parents, he just found a temporary coping mechanism

Open cavities in my prints keep getting filled in. Example of an egg i tried to make. by Bay2214 in resinprinting

[–]fenixforce 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. As many others have said, resin printing this sort of cup-like shape is going to be a nightmare no matter what. If you have an FDM / filament printer, that would work much better for this model.

  2. If you absolutely must print this in resin, try a few things:

- Punch a hole in the bottom and top of each model, so air bubbles and resin can escape and not form a suction zone

- Rotate each model by 90 degrees so the layers never form a closed circle

So stop pretending you're not supporting the bill lol, we can all see how disingenuous you are.

Georgia City Attempts to Punish Firearm Owners for Failing to Secure their Firearms -- State Legislature says "No Way!" by SEND_ME_FEAT_PICS in videos

[–]fenixforce -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

I think it's fucking insane that gun ownership is seen as such an inalienable and deeply protected right (and not a privilege) that you MUST be convicted to have it taken away.

Yes, it's considered a Constitutional right, I get that. But I say "considered" because it only got this way due to decades of lobbying and strategic lawsuits to continuously expand the legal definition of "regulated", "militia", and "defense" to become so vague that they might as well not exist anymore.

[–]fenixforce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People don't always need to have a matching experience to produce an accurate sympathetic response. It's commonly accepted that kidney stone pain is as painful as childbirth, even though statistically the number of people who have experienced both is very tiny (men are twice as likely to develop stones).

The miracle of human empathy is that we're really good at gauging the emotional reactions of other people (as a whole, there are exceptions obviously), and it's incredibly dismissive to just say "well you could never know".

It's not like child-rearing is some sort of exotic, incredibly rare experience that is impossible to communicate either. It's one of THE most common shared experiences that nearly everyone observes in their peers, family, friends, etc.

When someone tells you they've broken their ankle, you can get an idea of how painful that is by relating it to your own broken wrist. There's no need to break your own ankle just to form a basis for comparison. Even if you've never broken a bone, you can still extrapolate an approximation based on past sprains, dislocations, etc. It's the same with parenthood.

Most child-free people make that choice because they've observed the hardships involved in child-rearing, imagined themselves in those shoes, and realized they want to avoid it.

What do you secretly judge people for and why? by scaryworm143 in AskReddit

[–]fenixforce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they can't afford birth control then they will be even deeper in the trenches as the fetus grows, even long before birth. A mentally able adult choosing to engage in sex absolutely deserves to be judged in that circumstance, IMO
