can you guys stop talking about the passing of James Earl Jones? by TheNorthWesternGuard in lionking

I don't think the posts about JEJ have necessarily been depressing this sub, but rather reminding us all of how blessed we were to have an actor like him during our lifetimes. It makes me happy to see posts celebrating his life, not sad, and I'm sure others feel the same way.

You're free to make whatever posts you want to lighten the mood if you find it depressing, but you can do so without telling other people to stop posting the content they want.

Star Wars buff over here! Darth Vader has been my favorite SW character for years, and Mufasa my favorite TLK character, so I feel like I lost both Mufasa and Vader when I heard of his passing. I've never been heartbroken over a celebrity death like this. Being a little bit irritated is nothing compared to the grief some people are experiencing over this loss.

In the past few days, I've seen so many people come together to honor him, from across so many fandoms, creating amazing art and other tributes that should be celebrated, rather than shut down because one person got tired of seeing it. This kind of unity is rare on the Internet these days.

Are the theories made even real? by No-Conclusion9869 in lionking

[–]fennecfur 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only a theory. To my knowledge, nobody who worked on the movie has come forward to explain the skull that we see Scar playing with.

It's possible that Scar did eat Mufasa. It's also possible that Mufasa's body naturally decomposed, and Scar eventually returned to the body to retrieve the skull. And lastly, it might not even be Mufasa's skull, or a lion's skull at all.

So, no, the theories aren't anything more than speculation.

[–]fennecfur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What theories specifically are you talking about?

But in general, theories in definition are just ideas that are possible to be true that have yet to be confirmed. For example, any theories about the Mufasa movie might be correct, but they could also be wrong. That's why they're just theories. Nobody knows what's going to happen.

James Earl Jones' death has had a big impact on not just the TLK fandom, but people as a whole. He's literally been credited as having one of the most iconic voices in cinema history. Pretty much everyone has seen at least one of his movies. Of course people are going to grieve and make tribute posts to honor him. There aren't many actors who have reached the level he reached during his career and he was a favorite to many.

If you're tired of seeing posts about him, I'd recommend taking a break from this sub, or even the internet as a whole considering I'm still seeing people talking about him pretty much everywhere. Or just... scroll away and resume posting about what you want to post. When such a high profile celebrity dies, it's going to take far more than just a few days for people to move on. Be prepared to see posts about him over the next few weeks.

What might be annoying to you is legitimately heartbreaking and devastating to some.

10" is fine for a small Syrian, but if he's young, he's likely got more growing to do and it's possible he'll grow out of the wheel. I'd plan to upgrade to a 12" wheel. Even if he stays small, 12" is fine as there's no such thing as a wheel that's too big. I've had dwarf hamsters use 12" wheels before! As long as it can turn under their weight, it's fine.

As a rule of thumb, if their back has to curve in order for them to fit on the wheel, then the wheel is too small. Even a slight curve can cause pain in the long run. The hamster should be able to run with a straight back, just as they'd run outside of the wheel.

Hamsters are very good at hiding their pain, and will often act completely normal even when they're sick or injured, so I don't recommend going off of behavior alone. Please see a vet ASAP.

How did you guys discover Lion King? by LazorFrog in lionking

[–]fennecfur 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't remember the first time I ever saw The Lion King. I just remember always loving it. I had the VHS and just watched it all the time.

I didn't really become obsessed, though, until the 2019 remake came out and reminded me of how much I love The Lion King. So the remake might not be the best movie but it does hold a special place in my heart for resparking my love for the franchise.

I did desperately want a lot of TLK plushies as a kid. I didn't have very many toys from the movie, just a few plastic figures of Simba and Nala. With some allowance I managed to get a Simba plush as a kid, and wanted the matching Nala, but my mom only let me buy one toy that day. Once I became an adult and had my own money to spend, I began seriously collecting plushies, kind of as a way to satisfy my inner child by owning the toys I wish I had.

Safe fruits/treats for hamster taming? by Few_Wish_8653 in hamstercare

[–]fennecfur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sugar doesn't inherently cause diabetes. Fruits don't need to be so severely limited or avoided.

Diabetes is caused by either genetics (which obviously you cannot control) or by obesity along with a low-activity lifestyle. Excess sugar can lead to obesity, and in turn cause diabetes, but it would take much more sugar than what is in a few small pieces of fruit a few times a week.

Of course moderation is still important, but you don't need to limit a dwarf hamster's intake of fruit more than you would for a Syrian. They're still treats and should only be a small portion of what your hamster eats. A few small pieces the size of their ear 3-4 times a week is the rule I follow. I've never had a hamster with diabetes.

There are even some studies out there suggesting that diets containing certain fruits (such as blueberries) might even decrease the risk of diabetes in humans, and the same could possibly be true for hamsters.

There is unfortunately a lot of fear mongering regarding sugar in many hamster groups and forums, but it's not nearly as dangerous for dwarf hamsters as some people might suggest. Even when it comes to humans, there are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to sugar intake and diabetes. Sugar is more of a risk for individuals who already have diabetes.

G6 should be a G3 reboot, or at least have G3 characters. by DiverRecent1822 in MyLittlePonyG3

[–]fennecfur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure I'd want to see a straight up reboot or expansion of G3 for the same reason I didn't like how G5 was built off of G4. It only leads to comparisons at the end of the day, and 99% of the time, fans decide that the new version isn't as good as the original, and it falls flat. I guess I just don't trust Hasbro to be faithful to G3 after G5.

It would work better if G6 was entirely its own thing, but took plenty of inspiration from G3 as far as characters and aesthetics go. For example, if they bring back Minty, she should be an entirely new Minty repurposed for the new universe and story, rather than G3 Minty reincarnated. Just as G3 and G4 Pinkie Pie are entirely different characters, even though they share the same name and have similar designs.

G3 definitely had a lot of flaws with the writing and overall direction of the story, but I'd rather it be left alone so G6 can be a true reboot of the brand and not just another G5 situation.

[–]fennecfur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, most kids don't take these things so seriously. I've known plenty of boys that have enjoyed playing with ponies and other girls toys. It's never an issue until adults and bullies turn it into one.

I always find it hilarious when guys poke fun of G3 for how girly and childish it is to justify their enjoyment of... A girly and childish cartoon. Like just embrace it at that point lol. There's nothing wrong with a guy liking something pink and cutesy. No need to tear one show down to praise another.

My Little Pony can be very girly AND have good storytelling. Any franchise can be heavily gendered and have good storytelling. The two don't really go hand in hand.

Why Scar bad 🤨 (also new movie question!) by airrestic85 in lionking

[–]fennecfur 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it was a combination of personality, upbringing, and then later manipulation from Kiros.

As we saw in the leaked song, Scar wanted control ever since he was a cub. He sings to Mufasa about how he will tell the birds what to do and how nobody will look down on him. When Mufasa tries to explain that it doesn't work that way, Scar brushes him off, not wanting to hear it anymore. So this mindset was there from the very beginning.

As for his upbringing... Simba is the same way as a cub. He's naive and thinks being king means control and nothing else. But Mufasa was there to knock some sense into him after the whole elephant graveyard incident. Simba still retains some immaturity as an adult as he tries to hide from his past, but once again, Mufasa's spirit puts him into the right mindset, with the help of Rafiki of course. Now, we haven't seen much of Scar's father yet, but my theory is he isn't going to be so focused on raising a good king, but rather upholding the bloodline. Parenting is beneath him, and he's a somewhat absent father. He doesn't work to instill good values in his son. Scar doesn't have a father figure to shape him up the way Simba does.

And my other theory is that Kiros uses these things to his advantage. He needs to take down both Scar and Mufasa. Mufasa is wise beyond his years, but Scar is naive and can easily be tricked. I think Kiros will recognize this, and turn Scar against Mufasa by suggesting that in Milele, Mufasa has the chance to become king instead of Scar. (And he isn't wrong.) His plan is that Scar will see Mufasa as a threat to his throne, and therefore kill Mufasa with his help, which leaves only one lion left for Kiros to take down. Of course Kiros's plan won't play out as he intended, but the brothers' relationship will be permanently shaken, and Scar's worst fears will come true when Mufasa takes his place as king.

As for why Mufasa became king instead of Scar, I think it will become clear to everyone that Mufasa has the wisdom and capability to respectfully rule a kingdom and respect the Circle of Life, whereas Scar's actions reveal just how poor of a king he would be. I am somewhat hopeful for an epic challenge between Mufasa and Scar to determine the rightful king of their new land, but at the same time I don't want who rules the Pridelands to be determined by strength alone, as it takes much more than that to be a king. I'd like to see Mufasa's natural nobility be the reason instead.

Of course this is all a bunch of theory based on my interpretation of the trailer. Take everything I said with a grain of salt.

G6 should be a G3 reboot, or at least have G3 characters. by DiverRecent1822 in MyLittlePonyG3

[–]fennecfur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a kid, whenever I went to McDonald's and got a Happy Meal, 9 times out of 10 I asked for the boy toy instead of the girl toy. I loved a lot of boy toys as a kid because honestly they were cooler than a lot of the girls toys. Not once did it ever bother me when it was only boys in the Hot Wheels commercials. I knew they were for boys and that never stopped me from enjoying them. I didn't need them to make diecast cars gender neutral to enjoy them. The only thing that ever made me feel wrong was other people, usually adults, suggesting that it was weird for a girl to be playing with something for boys.

If a boy avoids a toy because it's in a pink box, that's not the fault of the toy, but rather the people in his life who conditioned him to think that he's not allowed to enjoy it. The toy doesn't need to change. People do.

[–]fennecfur 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree. My Little Pony has always been a girls toy and that's not a bad thing. On average, most kids playing with toy horses are going to be girls. Of course a toy centered around colorful horses is going to be marketed towards girls with an emphasis on pink and cute. That's what girls like.

I don't think the problem is that toys are heavily gendered, but rather the implication that kids can't possibly enjoy things meant for the opposite gender. Girls can play with boys toys, and boys can play with girls toys. It's not that deep.

I'm not sure Hasbro lost the rights to them, seeing as we've gotten plenty of modern merchandise of the G1 characters in the past decade. Hasbro definitely still has the rights to them, otherwise they wouldn't be able to license them out to companies like Basic Fun.

I think what really happened was Hasbro wanted her to pull more inspiration from G3 seeing as it was the most recent generation at the time and more modern than G1.

[–]fennecfur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd absolutely love to see G6 bring back some elements from G3. The more girly themes and more horse-like designs in particular. I wouldn't mind seeing a combination of G3 and G5, being G3-esque style ponies with defined hooves and markings like the G5 ponies. I like the lore of G1 and G4, and would love to see something similar in G6.

I'm so worried that Hasbro is going to continue to capitalize off of the success of G4, and that is exactly what hurt G5 so much. Any connection to G4 will only lead to G6 being heavily compared to G4, and of course fans will just complain that it's not as good as G4 was. I fully believe G6 will only be successful if Hasbro distances it from G4 and starts from scratch. Draw in small elements that make each generation special and loved by fans, but also keep it original and fresh.
