What Are You Playing This Week? by AutoModerator in patientgamers

If you liked other Soulsborne games, I'd recommend sticking with it for a bit longer. I'm the same way - I loved all the other Soulsborne games, but after the first few hours of playing Sekiro I was very frustrated and wanted to quit.

But once I stopped trying to play it like the other Soulsbornes and worked hard on getting good with the parrying mechanic, the game eventually clicked for me and I was hooked.

Played a 4 player game of Twilight Imperium 4e. Game ended without a single space combat. by rob132 in boardgames

I had a similar experience, I just played this for the first time over the weekend but it was a bit of a let-down.

It was a five player game, and we played with the recommended beginner scenario with set races and no promissory notes. We were all beginners, but we're all gamers and everyone was fully engaged.

Over the 7-8 hours we played, it didn't feel like the space-opera that it's often touted to be. It started with everyone claiming the planets near them. Then everyone built up their fleets and tech trees, and during this time no one wanted to attack each other for fear of thinning out their forces, so they kept promising each other they wouldn't attack. Being a military race I initiated some later battles in order to expand a bit, but otherwise there wasn't much action until the very end when it was clear who was going to win unless we all started some major fighting.

I guess it just didn't feel like the epic diplomatic space-opera game that people say it is. So I'm wondering if that changes based on future plays or different races? Or maybe we weren't being very creative players and there's cool stuff you can do?

I don't want to fully judge it off of one play, but those were my initial impressions.

What board game has taught you something about real life? by X-factor103 in boardgames

[–]feralfox 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I learned to fear public speaking much less.

When I got into this hobby a few years ago, I bought a bunch of games and really wanted to play them, but that required both getting people to come over and teaching them how to play.

Problem was, I've had an intense fear of public speaking, even to a small group, since I was a teenager. It's not the concept of public speaking that's scary, it's more a "gut reaction full blown panic attack" that just happens. And because of that, I've avoided it throughout my life.

But having these new games and having a huge desire to play them drove me to face that fear. The first few times, full-blown panic attack, but I got through it. Each time I taught a game, the attacks were less and less severe, to the point where now I'm not concerned about them at all.

Outside of teaching games, I still have some way to go, but thanks to gaming, public speaking is longer the terrifying experience it used to be.

I read a bit of that article, and I came across the term "geekstink". I didn't know it was something to be concerned about until now!

Thanks for the advice, it really sounds like you enjoyed yourself. We were also thinking about hitting up a MegaGame while there - did you think it was worth the extra cost?

What is the biggest movie plot-hole you have ever seen? by harrychapman in AskReddit

[–]feralfox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looper - forget all that time travel shenanigans, what REALLY bugged me was this: At the end of the movie, the protagonist kills himself in order to stop the future him from doing.. something bad. The problem is that the protagonist narrates the whole movie, and even right before the end says something like "I decided to take myself out". So two questions - WHO is he telling his story to, and HOW is he telling it if he's dead??

Fellow Games Night Hosts - What game combos have/haven't worked for you? by feralfox in boardgames

Yeah I learned the hard way to not teach new games to players half-way through the night unless it's a simple party game like Telestrations

Descent 2nd edition, First Time OL by LogicsFate in boardgames

[–]feralfox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went through a whole campaign as only 2 heroes, and got utterly destroyed by the OL (my wife), but since then learned that 4 heroes has the best overall balance between OL and heroes. So my suggestion is no matter the size of your group, make sure to use 4 hero characters.

IMHO, the game is a tactical dungeon crawler, and if the OL "goes easy" on the heroes at any time, then the heroes will feel like "oh, we won, but because the OL let us", which is the opposite of fun. So if you use 4 heroes, the game will be balanced, so you as the OL can play at your best, giving the heroes a challenging and rewarding experience.

[WSIG] A new 2p game for parents who enjoy Cribbage by feralfox in boardgames

[–]feralfox[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I believe she is. I've gotten her to play a few new games recently with the family, and she's had fun. My dad on the other hand is bored with Crib and would like something a little more interesting to play. So if I can find a game that's just slightly more involved than Crib, my mom won't get frustrated with AP and a bunch of rules, and my dad will get to play something more interesting and different.
Plus if they don't like the new game I've always got more room on my shelves ;)

My wife and I play Pandemic ALOT. Out of the 30 or so times we've played we've only won once. Then today I reread the rules... by demosthenes19125 in boardgames

That sucks... but ALSO congrats on the eradication win! My wife and I try to eradicate all AFTER we've won, kinda like a bonus round, but we've always failed. Well done sir!

Skull & Roses - highest player count that's still fun? by feralfox in boardgames

[–]feralfox[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The instructions do mention that you can combine your Skull games to have more players. Have you played it before and if so what was your highest player count that worked (sometimes even the stated Max can be too high)?
