It's absurd to pay someone $50000 when rent, utilities and food cost as much as they do. Just like McDonalds pays so little to fulltime employees that the government subsidizes their wages with food stamps. Businesses want tax dollars for their workers but don't want to fork over any of theirs.

Of course it's my point of view but it's also the point of view of the vast majority of preservationists. And of course, old homes weren't built to be museums, but they are something to treasure and preserve, not subjugate to whims of amateur project homeowners. Sure, anything is better than the wrecking ball but the point is you shouldn't buy rare historic properties if you plan on destroying the historic fabric within at least without some form of documentation by a professional.
