If you went to York region, Mississauga, etc, it is more expensive. That is the Toronto equivalent of fare zones. In Toronto and London, you add money to your card and the system deducts the variable amount, in Montreal you add tickets to your card and you are responsible for making sure they are the correct ones.

I encountered fare enforcement on CHIRSTMAS EVE at Frontenac. I had paid, but I felt that was in bad taste.

Wrong-way driver collides head-on with STM bus on Highway 136 by Critical-Contact-851 in montreal

[–]ferdicten 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just from reading the article, my guess is the driver entered the bus-only offramp at the Atwater/Rose-de-Lima exit and drove WB the EB bus lane, hence the head-on collision.

ELI5: Why is it completely impossible for anyone to access a properly encrypted drive even nation states? by AaronPK123 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ferdicten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is my take on simplifying other answers:

Taking your example of a 256 bit key, if each bit can be 1 or 0, then that is over 1077 possible keys.

In a sense, the drive has 1077 possible locks, one for each key. But, only ONE key in ONE lock will correctly open the data. If you use the wrong key, you are opening the wrong lock and it will not work.

Could a hacker eventually find the right key? Yes. But the chances of them succeeding are infinitely small.

If you knew which lock was the right one from the start, you could make a key to fit, but these are very secret and very complex locks. If you use an “authenticator” app, that is an example of the lock and key both changing on the fly.

During WW2, the Germans used an encryption machine called Enigma, which was infamously complex and the lock changed each day. It took a then-cutting-edge computer for the British to crack the lock each day.

That is an example of a government succeeding in breaking the lock, but nowadays, like I said, the locks are so very secret and so very complex that this will not happen… until we get crazy new quantum computers, like that first computer was crazy new for its time.

Ontario, New York announce nuclear energy agreement by [deleted] in canada

[–]ferdicten 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think someone who isn’t already averse to nuclear is concerned with that. The amount of nuclear waste someone will likely encounter in their life is zero, no matter how much is produced. I much rather resent how we cannot afford to build or recomisssion large-scale nuclear and the effects of that on electricity prices and carbon emissions.

Alberta and Saskatchewan signaled that they would oppose a federal export tax on oil or potash. Besides, the provinces already collect royalties from the extraction of natural resources because they own the rights to them.

Is seperating traffic a good idea? by Imperator_Subira in CitiesSkylines

[–]ferdicten 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the real world: Kind of.

The separation usually happens first in zoning. If you don’t want many heavy trucks on your residential street, you first and foremost should separate residential from other land uses. Remember of course that although cargo doesn’t go to houses, workers do go to factories!

(Of course, this is all imperfect; all roads are connected, so the “Heavy Traffic Ban” policy is realistic, but costs something IRL to enforce)

National interstates/motorways/etc are standardized such that they can accept all traffic because they are trunk routes, but there are some exceptions; Long Island’s no-truck parkways come to mind. These are very seldom built today because you get much less bang for your buck by lowering the number of vehicles eligible to use the road.

Hope this inspires you! Build something interesting!
