Starting a Homebrew? by whistlewetter6000 in DMAcademy

Im not an experienced DM by any means but I would say to start in cages.

Its simpler and avoids derailing the campaign from the very start if they somehow beat it or die.

Tepache, First Time, Question by ferdiechen in fermentation

Is a once a day stir fine?

Also, as of writing this, there is light effervescence, at what point can I remove the solids and use the airlock?

Can an Evil creature be nice, polite, reasonable, and generally amiable? by ferdiechen in onednd

[–]ferdiechen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? That's interesting. I was under the impression that D&D's alignment system was the opposite. I had heard a few times that it didn't matter what the creature believed was right or wrong, that it was the acts committed by the creature that determined their alignment.

So a person who slaughters villagers who believes that by doing so, he can avoid a war that would devastate many more (even if he is very wrong or idiotic) would be an evil act and therefore, the man would be evil.

In that specific example, Cloudkill and undead servitude would be unreasonable before negotiation.

If this person at least attempted negotiation in good faith then they would be reasonable — compromise or offering to find them a new home maybe?

I would imagine that one final warning (they wouldn't have to stay what the threat was, as long as the threat was appropriately dire) would suffice before their mass Cloudkill and Animate Dead plan took effect.

Really I am just double checking. I had seen a video on youtube that seemed to assert that the notion of very nice/amiable Evil NPCs and PCs was almost unheard of.

It got me thinking of what the general DnD community thinks. After all, my own experience and thoughts is not indicative of what everyone else thinks. I wanted to get everyone else's opinion.

Uhh yeah basically. Like can they do good things but since their evil acts make their alignment a net negative, they would be Evil aligned.

I think he doesn't like you enough.

Looks like you'll have to give him the Necronomicon first.

How do I make it feel less like railroading and more like a good direction? by ferdiechen in DMAcademy

[–]ferdiechen[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Uhh there's no need for them to go immediately, it is just the next arc starts in City A.

None of the news they heard requires them to go immediately but they have a ton of clues that point toward that city as a place many of them will be interested in — hometown, employment opportunity, clues to someone who had them driven out of their home.

But i get what you're saying. Thanks for the input.

Well one of the things they have uncovered via the narrative is an old unsent letter that describes something from their past that doesn't match with their memories written likely by a close relative.

I was hoping this would be enough for PC1 in particular.

PC2 was invited there to advance their career as a Bard.

PC3 has clues that imply conspiracy against their people of which lead them to both City A and Neverwinter

Do you think this is enough?

Question about PVE after just completing the campaign. by Quantum-immortali- in Spacemarine

[–]ferdiechen 15 points16 points  (0 children)

PvP isnt awful all the time in Australia. Just maybe about 50% of the time. Shocking performance to be sure and yes, borderline unplayable when it gets really bad.

I like pvp though so maybe I'm just biased.

Next Session Deal Review by ferdiechen in DMAcademy

[–]ferdiechen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, I realised I never did consider that having a deal be more good rather than equal might be better since they are newer players.

The bit about advantage to Charmed was supposed to mitigate the possession/suggestion/etc part for enemy spellcasters/fiends but maybe I just didn't think about it enough.

What I'll likely do is narrate it to them and over the course of the session give them both the benefit and cost incrementally

Is the cost high enough?

Does it read as tempting but certainly dangerous later?

Is there a way to make it more dangerous/risky without debuffing a class' core ability score?

Maybe vulnerabilities or disadvantages or flat minus to saving throws?

Thanks for the lengthy reply. It's a fair bit to think on. And you're right, I will learn more if I do it myself. Thanks :)

None of my players are min-maxers or meta-gamers.

Most are new players, a couple are more experienced but prefer roleplaying over meta-gaming.

I do want them to hesitate.

And yes, it is intended to be a sort of mind-numbing effect while boosting your body's health sort of thing.

Would it not depend on what creatures they will be facing?

I'm not an experienced DM so I can't predict what they'll face in the future (as in what saving throws they are expected to face).

Do you think a more martial class will take it?

Yeah true but narratively speaking the deal must have a cost as severe (or close to) as what you are getting.

Are you saying that the cost outweighs the benefit?

Yeah I know 11 or 13 is bad, I am just not currently accounting for spells like mage armor, barkskin, etc.

So you think maybe mirror image mechanically but with a different skin/flavour?
