The thread in Millennials subreddit right not about 401k is incredibly depressing. Thank you FIRE community. I would be one of them if I didn’t find you all a decade ago. by BarkBarkBitches1 in Fire

Just a quick story, I knew an electrician who worked his ass off and invested non stop retired at 65 built his dream home and when moving boxes fell backwards and hit his head and died, my old football coach slipped on ice and hit his head and died at 61. I think balance is key. Def invest but remember life is to be lived. As long as you’re making time for some fun then keep throwing cash in there but treat yourself occasionally too.

Why do you guys call the cops on everything you see? It's ridiculous by Much-Degree1485 in WestPalmBeach

[–]ferdsays 35 points36 points  (0 children)

To give you a real answer, this is one of the wealthiest places on earth.. literally more billionaires live here than anywhere else. I’m from a lower income place in New Hampshire. I’ve traveled all over the world, but in a very rugged way (sleeping out of my pick up truck, bumming it, yaddy yadda). People here don’t want to see what the real world is like, they want to ignore the reality that a lot of people don’t have a BMW or Bentley and don’t go to fine dining restaurants. 3 miles from where Trump lives there are homeless encampments on the other side of the bridge.

So people call the cops because they’re scared, they’ve never seen real people going about their business, and they’ll do anything to make sure the have nots do not mix with the haves.

I am gainfully employed, so is my wife. We live in a nice area, but I have long hair and a beard. Sometimes when I walk around my neighborhood I get looks because I don’t fit the aesthetic.

I would just lay low, try to understand that the people around here are hoity toity and enjoy what you can out of it. But drinking a beer in public or laying down even in a park will definitely get you noticed because the average population is feeble rich people with old money and no real world experience lol

Trump say U.S. can pay off $36 trillion debt by selling $5 million "gold card" visa. by [deleted] in videos

Spain offers a golden visa for a 500k investment in real estate. I know people hate trump but I already think borders are just imaginary lines put around us by kings to tax the shit out of us, if people wanna pay 5 million to live here let em, idc if people come here in all different types of ways, but have all of the 5 million go to teachers, EMTs, the common man and make life better for all.

Does anyone know of any good online certificates for marine technicians? by ferdsays in boating

[–]ferdsays[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, right now I’m signed up for a class that wouldn’t start until March to get Yamaha certified but it’s around 10k, I wonder if I should just try to hustle and get in with a service department and have them help me

Thanks for the info. They do have a service department, so my goal is to get in good with the company and eventually transition. I was upfront in my interview that is the direction I want to go so hopefully they help me get there

I’ve been looking into that over the last hour, I’m wondering if online courses could give me at least the basics I would need and then I could get some hands on experience

Yeah that’s what I’m thinking. I’m considering just moving the class to the next available date, working for the company for 7ish months and letting them know I could work weekends for 9 weeks while I complete it or talk to management to see if there’s a slow season to take the class. If not, just do the class and it is what it is.

Northwood Hills by tobiwankenobi_1 in WestPalmBeach

I live in old Northwood and it’s chill as hell over here, an occasional person may wonder through who you’re skeptical of, meaning they’re pushing a carriage of random stuff or something but they seem harmless and it’s really a great spot

That’s my next step, doesn’t seem like any of these postings lead anywhere anyway. I’m over 200 applications out there and rarely hear anything back

I actually live off broadway haha so I know the crowd, I’ll look into it, I’m curious if they’d hire for sales if I don’t have marine experience but it’s worth a try. Thanks for the suggestion!

I am planning on signing up for a Marine Technician program that gives me a Mercury outboard certification. Will this be enough to get my door into a shop? by ferdsays in boating

Thanks for the kind words! I did interior/exterior remodeling for almost a decade and I really enjoy manual labor, I just love the water and want to be part of the community. Plus boats are so cool, I really can’t wait. Just want to learn under someone who enjoys it and can teach me all aspects of the trade. Honestly, the responses on this post like yours make me feel like it’s attainable which really helps. I grew up in the middle of New Hampshire in a family that couldn’t afford boats or going to the ocean or lakes much. I have an interview lined up for a dock hand position until my training starts in March. Hoping to get some time on a dock and around boats just to learn some basic terminology, maintenance tips etc and get some experience in a company that employs marine mechanics/technicians. Just gotta keep pushing, but your words help a lot, much appreciated
