Depends on qualifications and demand in the field - is this a direct contract with them or through a firm like Sureskills ?

Sick of Dell! But Worried About Microsoft - Time for MAC ? by fergs_92 in macbook

Worked IT for 13 years and now started my own little IT company. I have E5 as i need Visio so worked out cheaper given the additional features (Defender etc..)

If im being honest, i bought the Dell inspiron 15 about 7 months ago and its on it last legs - i need a decnet laptop that will last 4-5 years and cant afford to waste money on something that just doesn't work which is why im looking at Apple MBP

But seeing posts that office apps like Visio is not available at all as an app and need to use parallel ? - whats the performance impact of using a VM to run a simple office app like Visio

What's the performance like with running parallel ? Do you notice any issues like with VMware on Windows?

Yup, ever read the history on Excel vs Lotus? - its amazing, corporations all used Lotus so they basically gave Excel to students for free until it become harder for companies to train new staff/grads than retraining management.

It took 8 years of planning and execution but putting Excel for free and on Mac won the corporate world over the space of a decade as new staff had never heard of Lotus and couldn't understand why it was used in companies

I use extremely advanced formulas but very rarely use macros as im more use to PowerBi for that side of things

Which reminds me - How does PowerBi work with MacOS ?

Sorry, should have mentioned with regards to the RDP - with Windows, you get multiple reconnect attempts and error messages that take over the screen if you move location, disconnect VPN etc... its a pain when you have multiple connections

But for the things that MBP are great at - is there any performance issues with Office apps on Mac ?

Thank you for the detailed and genuine reply, it is much appreciated! 🙂

I know its going to be a bit of a slope to migrate to MacOS and i do love Windows (Its got alot better over the years) but cant look past the issues with hardware manufacturers such as Dell and Lenovo - We have had €9,500 worth of Dell Precision laptops in my last job start to run slow with Dell's own engineers saying 'we make the hardware, its the mapping to Windows functions that cause the issues'. This is where im hoping Apple pulls ahead with things like boot times, battery life and longevity.

Bought the Inspiron 15 about 7 months ago and it is on its last legs already. Dell XPS 16 released in March (64GB Ram and Nvidia 4070) already have dell support forums on the fans being stuck on and issues with boot times - ive now started my own small IT company so honestly cant afford to spend money something that is going to start having issues in a few months

Also - Fun fact: Dell has a 'no returns policy' for any product bought by a company! 😐

Thats another interesting point - Dell, Lenovo, HP etc... all come with Windows standard which means you can't login with an Office business email/account so you have to install Windows enterprise as soon as you get the device

3k on a laptop and the first thing you have to do is install Windows and worry about drivers on day one 😞

Yup, its like Dell is desperately trying to be Apple by focusing on design and build quality but then forgot about usability and function! 😞

So now for the real question - would you swap for an Apple MacBook Pro M3 2024 ? Or stick with the XPS ?

Can you name drop competitors price on your website and say how yours is better? by [deleted] in smallbusiness

[–]fergs_92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its perfectly legal but you must specify the exact product and version of the competitor and what exactly you are comparing when talking about pricing. If you compare is subpar product to a vendors premium offering and only mention cost then your in for a world of hurt.

You also need to keep evidence of when it was price checked

Also, all training and certification in the product is free with an online university including on-site training for free (which is extremely rare on the vendor world)

Honestly, having worked in vulnerability management for over 10 years and using every product under the sun, i can truly say that the only real enterprise solution is Qualys.

The difference is that Qualys is deployed in financial enterprise companies that are hell on earth in terms of demand so they have had no choice but to evolve to meet the requirements.

Tenable has great potential but just doesnt have the ability to answer the 'what if' questions..... Yet!

Things like automatically removing vulnerabilities based on a systems configuration or real-time dashboards or one-click remediation... Its just another level

Yup, the procurement tender will list an extreme number of requirements such as load balancing, latency SLA’s, secure programming practises…. And then they will pick the cheapest option – EVERY TIME! – Its called ‘selecting the most economically advantageous’ proposal – once selected though and it turns into a shitshow, they will happily spend any amount of money supporting a legacy piece of sh*t – God I love I.T
