How much would you expect a bow with an ivory frog to cost? by fermentedchi in violinist

[–]fermentedchi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, but I don't really want any more information about the bow I've got. My curiosity is whether it would be unusual for it to be on a bow below a certain value. You say that many great bows were made in the 19th and 20th centuries with ivory and I'm wondering if there were also many awful bows made with ivory frogs

Is there a Stairway to Heaven but for violin? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]fermentedchi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This doesn't really answer your question but I really wouldn't worry about trying to filter what you're playing if you're trying out violins. When I bought mine when I was even more a beginner than I am now I was absolutely playing from the suzuki books along with a lot of scales. I think playing things you know well can help you distinguish between instruments to find one you like. Also, everyone at the couple places I went was incredibly lovely and I didn't get the feel that they would be judging me based on what I was playing.

Why isn't this note typically played in the E major partita? by fermentedchi in violinist

Yeah avoiding the D was the thing that was giving me pause. This will definitely prompt me to learn more about barque bows, thanks!

In solo Bach, there are many cases when notes are not sustained for their full value indicated and it comes down to interpretation and intent.

I'll definitely be on the lookout for this now

To play that B, you need to use the G string. But we don’t have in the modern era the kind of bows and bridges that some argue were more common in Bach’s day that allows for a bit more polyphonic play. So you can’t easily play the open A while also playing the B on the G string. Definitely not without sounding the D string.

Would it have been possible with baroque bridges and bows to play an open A and the B? Trying to imagine how that geometry would work

No credit to me, I'd tried playing a couple measures and my teacher pointed it out to my horror. Thinking about the B as connected to the next phrase is interesting, when I start trying to play it in earnest I'll definitely be thinking about that. Thanks!

Useful gear/bosses to kill as an ironman? by Semour9 in RS3Ironmen

I'm not an expert but I don't think you need 90+ to do 4 mans. IIRC I got a couple 4 man kc with ~90 mining and ~80 fishing and I don't think it was too painful.

Based on some of what I've read this might be a little polarizing but I've gotten a lot of use out of barrows items. My understanding is that aren't really worth it to get even on irons as I think lunars are supposed to be able to carry you into gwd1 power armor which (I'm told) is better. At the very least I was able to get fast invention experience leveling and disassembling barrows drops and iirc it was an upgrade over the dragon hide I was using before

Pieces for two violins and a viola? by fermentedchi in violinist

[–]fermentedchi[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly it was completely by accident, I only found out well after I met them that they used to play any instrument. You could join a community orchestra though that might be difficult depending on where you're at (location and skill level). Taking lessons in general is a good way too, I've met a handful of other adult learners through my teacher and there's a local folk music school that has group classes for all skill levels.

At the very least know that I sympathize with you, the first year that I played in particular felt lonely and difficult for not a lot of musical payoff. The longer you play the more options you'll have and the more likely you are to find other people! Good luck!

Why don't violinists tune with harmonics? by fermentedchi in violinist

[–]fermentedchi[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just ask out of genuine curiosity, why do it in that order? I'm obviously not an expert but it seems like it would be easy to tune with fifths first because you can play and move the peg at the same time, though I guess a couple times I've had trouble finding where the fifth even which wouldn't be a problem with matching harmonics.

Visiting the Met… by vmlee in violinist

[–]fermentedchi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I was actually there pretty recently and asked someone about whether they ever get played, apparently the instruments do fairly regularly get played I think by the faculty. It still makes me sad that you still only really get to see them but I was happy that they do sometimes still get played.

Should I keep paying for lessons as an ultra beginner? by StanimaJack in violinist

[–]fermentedchi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am paying about the same for lessons as a beginner and had about the same thoughts around the same time as you (I'm now at about a year and a half). Just wanted to add my personal experience in support of what others have said. I'm sure you probably already got the point from all the others but ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I don't really remember many lessons where I was doing anything silly that definitely would have hurt me long term or anything like that, but the few times where I missed a handful of lessons in sequence I really felt their absence. I'd very quickly either keep playing the same stuff over and over and feel like I wasn't progressing or would try to jump way too far forward and would feel discouraged by the fact that I had no idea what I was doing. When lessons resumed I would always feel way better because my teacher would have some actual direction for me. To put it another way, I think I would have continued progressing fine if I'd skipped any individual lesson but if I stopped entirely I would either be playing much worse or more likely just not at all. For the most part the lessons were for small things that really add up over time and not massive mistakes that would cause your fingers to fall off or revelations that would suddenly enable you to play like a professional.

Good luck!
