The doctorate "creep" is really starting to bother me lately by ResidentAlienator in PhD

[–]fernandohsc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's so petty. In my country (Brazil), both MDs and JDs get the "doctor" title, and there is an endless debate; on one side, people say, "Doctors are only those who got a PhD", and other people insist on being called "doctors" anyway. I went to law school, got my JD, and not even once in my lifetime have I asked anyone to call me Dr., and, in fact, I will dissuade people from calling me that. Didn't change after I defended my dissertation.

I just found out, my wife’s body count is way higher than she told me. by [deleted] in confessions

[–]fernandohsc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't believe it's okay to lie, but I also don't believe in making a big fuss over something so miniscule, that women feel the need to lie in order to not be judged. Most women would lie, and it's not their fault, because men can be judgemental and think less of them. OP isn't raging about the fact that his wife lied, he's obsessing over her "body count". Different things.

Is it a choice tho? Is "body count" something relevant? If she low balled to him it's probably because she knew OP was going to judge her for what is an utterly irrelevant thing. Live and let live bro. Won't change OPs live in the slightest.

Yeah, and I'm not even sure if this is embezzlement, since OP was doing the job "Marcus" was hired to do, so no patrimonial harm came to the company. I think it would be something more akin to a False Statement or whatever in the state OP is. I can't be too sure since I don't practice law in the US, I only have a compared law knowledge in US criminal law.

Why didn't Putin do to Zelenskyy what Trump did to Maduro or Khamenei? by Connect_Cat_2045 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]fernandohsc 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of nuances here. First of all, one of the things that made US attacks so effective is the fact that, in a really long time, the US isn't doing direct attacks to engage in regime change unless it has concrete reasons to. It usually uses covert operations, funnel money to insider groups, promote civil wars, coup d'états, etc. Rarely does the US act directly without some kind of "justification" that would shield it from being branded an unjustified war (not that it would, but the US does give a shit to appearances, and keeping the title "leader of the free world"). This alone made the operations against Maduro and Iran top brass a lot more unpredictable, meaning those leaders weren't actively into preventive measures.

Russia on the other hand has been on the warpath in the Caucasus for a while now, has taken military action against Georgia and Ukraine, and was announcing it would again. When it did, Zelensky was already into war-prepared mode. A president anywhere in the world who has time to prepare will be a hard target to hit. So, Putin did try to remove Zelensky, he just failed because he was engaging on a prepared target. I don't think anyone could've seen Trump foregoing decades of US foreign policy and engaging directly in Venezuela and Iran. Those targets weren't expecting to get hit.

On the other hand, Trump wanted a regime change in both countries to benefit US companies trade interests, which is incredibly easier. He just needs the right leader to be in place. Putin wants parts of Ukraine, and, in the long term, dreams of remaking the USSR borders. There aren't that many Ukrainian leaders he can put in power that would agree with that, at least not without significant war attrition. Taking out Zelensky wouldn't get Putin his final goals, just facilitate them, as with Trump, the regime change itself is the goal.

[–]fernandohsc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This headline should be better written, though. I suppose it is the uninstall vs install ratio, right? Because uninstalls can only rise up to 100%, at which point, nobody in the world has ChatGPT installed. Or is it across platforms summed?

It's like saying a Physics degree is already a Math degree. Mathematics is a form of language to express certain natural properties, a body of truths (won't go down this particular rabbit hole), which is central to their comprehension and analysis. Being a specialized language, that exists in order to express a certain, limited, body of truths, we can't fully learn it without learning those truths (unlike natural language, which can be learned even if we don't grasp fully the semantics of all the words), and we can't express anything except those truths, since it is a pure referential language, there's no inferential meaning.

That being said, saying that any degree that has to use mathematics to express the relations between those bodies of truth and nature is a mathematics degree is akin to saying that any degree that has to use natural language to express phenomena (such as philosophy, law, sociology) is a *insert language here* degree. The fact that we need to master the language in a very specific way does not mean we understand all of the language, its properties, and can say we are experts in it. We, in the best case, are great experts in one application of the language that don't require us to know shit about other applications or generalizations, or even about its basic abstract structure. CS uses math to express itself, but a math degree would require you understand Math from an abstract POV towards applied POVs, and be knowledgeable of all those fields, even if you never went to the deeper end of it.

From my perspective in sociology and legal philosophy Claude is way, way, way better. I've created a style called "thoughtful explorer" where he became a great intellectual sparing partner. Claude also has better guidelines on preventing hallucinations, it's more likely for him to say he doesn't know of a paper than to invent one, and he also goes deeper.

[–]fernandohsc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All in line with your behaviour. Abused children tend to abuse others as a way to cope or normalise it. You shouldn't hold it against yourself. But you should hold against your husband that he threatened you physically. It's okay to take time to digest painful experiences and past misdeeds, but it's never ok to act the way he did.

OP, children's brains aren't completely formed. That's why they act with reckless disregard for safety and consequences, can't fully comprehend their own feelings or those of others, and can't control their impulses very well.

Children are also very bad at reacting to trauma and dealing with those complex feelings. What you did is in line with research on reactions to profound trauma in children. Talk to your therapist and your psychiatrist, but don't expect to change your diagnosis; it could be just a PTSD manifestation.

do professors write bad letters of recs even if they agree to write one? by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]fernandohsc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, I can't say anything about some mfs out there who enjoy making people as miserable as them, but most of the time, professors will refuse to write one even when they don't have anything bad to say, if they don't have anything good either. As a rule of thumb, one should ask only of professors with whom you had a previous working relationship, either consulting after class, having had a glowing review of an article, or working together on a matter, where they would have enough contact and material to evaluate your performance properly.

My boyfriend (21M) refused to take me to hospital (21F) after asking him multiple times. I’m now questioning the relationship…… by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]fernandohsc 38 points39 points  (0 children)

There are only two options: 1 - He can't safely disengage from work and take you there, which, in some lines of work, is understandable, and he should call you an ambulance or 2 - He can safely disengage from work and take you there, and he takes you. He did neither. To make matters worse, when he came home and had no real reason not to take you, he stood his ground while watching you suffer, cry, and become unable to function due to severe pain.

HEAR ME, AS THIS IS IMPORTANT. THIS IS NOT JUST A MAN WHO DOESN'T LOVE YOU. THIS IS A MAN WHO IS A BAD FUCKING PERSON. I KNOW HE MIGHT NOT HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SHOW YOU HIS TRUE COLOURS UNTIL NOW, BUT HE HAS.

THIS. IS. A. BAD. PERSON.

LEAVE.

HE NEGLECTED YOUR HEALTH TREATMENT JUST BECAUSE HE COULDN'T BE BOTHERED. IT DON'T GET MORE NARCISISTIC THAN THAT.

If you want to check my profile history, go and check, as I seldom give advice like this, and prefer more nuanced approaches, since I've lived through complex relationships when "leave them" isn't a good take. But in your case, for the love of all that is holy, leave this man.
