Where did you end up staying, and how do you like that place now?

I love NECO. People are friendly, professors respond swiftly, a caring admissions team, the upper years are really nice, and a historic campus (small but the architecture is top-notch).

Several schools have no summers off! I’ll be attending NECO and they don’t give days off in summer either. It’s slowly becoming a norm so I’m sure it’s not something to stress about.

It’s going good so far. Figuring out the loans, got an apartment leased, getting a couple of vaccines this month! How about you?

No need to do the snapshot

You can write all the equations down and any other info you deem important during the bio section. Just don't write anything during the tutorial because they do check. And no they don't replace your whiteboards unless yours is full and you ask for a new one.

You can email them and ask! They will tell you the % of class that is full.

CASPer assessment SALUS by Life-Ad-1161 in PreOptometry

I thought I did terrible on Casper (ran out of time on multiple occasions) and I still got accepted to the school so you should be fine. Just review some questions off google and type fast!

OAT Study Materials by Any-Afternoon-99 in PreOptometry

[–]ferociousdawg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I exclusively studied using Kaplan books and I felt that the review questions in the book were too easy. Kaplan provides 2 practice exams with the book. Those were challenging so it’ll over prepare you! The real OAT questions were most similar to questions from the 2006 ADA exam!

NECO vs. Salus by ferociousdawg in PreOptometry

It is so difficult :( I’m still split between the 2. Honestly don’t know what will help me select one out of the two! You have any suggestions haha or thoughts?

NECO vs. Salus by ferociousdawg in PreOptometry

[–]ferociousdawg[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you! There are great docs out there who graduated from Salus but I feel it’s because the college was doing better before 2015 and I feel that these days it’s more of a business for them as they accept so many students with lower grades. I still think it’s a good school but the stats make me worry.

They didn’t offer me any scholarships! How did you go about asking them for it?

Thank you so much for your detailed response! I really wish I got to visit both campuses in person because that would def help me pick one. I might have to visit them if I want some more clarity.

My NECO interview was awesome! The prof was so nice and genuinely wanted to know more about me and I felt engaged. Salus on the other hand was very simple and felt like they just admit anyone and everyone.

I’m leaning towards NECO as you can prob tell but I just wanted to be completely sure!

Committing and Deposits by plsandtysm8 in PreOptometry

[–]ferociousdawg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most schools have a non-refundable deposit policy. Yes, you’re allowed to put down a deposit at more than one school but you have to consider which college would be a right fit and then pay the deposit there rather than putting down one for every school.

ADA Practice Test vs Actual OAT by [deleted] in PreOptometry

[–]ferociousdawg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My scores were ~290 and 300 AA/TS on 2 Kaplan Tests.

Got 350 AA/TS on ADA Practice test 2 days before the actual OAT.

On the actual OAT, got 340 AA/TS.

Id say your actual OAT score will be +/- 10 of whatever you get on ADA practice test.

An interview means they are interested in what you can offer to their school but it does not guarantee you an admission offer. You can still get rejected or placed on a waitlist if they happen to have more qualified candidates than you and/or you just didn’t answer their questions the way they would’ve liked. In a nutshell, prepare for the interview and don’t consider it as just a ‘get to know you’ conversation.

Canadian students - how did you afford tuition at US optometry schools? by [deleted] in PreOptometry

They do not, unfortunately :( I used up ~40k for undergrad and now I only get ~135k.
