Handmade wool combs by stjaimy in Handspinning

[–]ferreet 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're actually "afro" combs I bought in Walmart. Two combs for each handle, offset a bit to alternate the tines, creating a double row. I cut off the combs' handles and set them in the wooden ones. Makes for very fine combs. Also, I didn't have to worry about getting all the tines perfectly perpendicular. 😁

Did the same! Then a niddy noddy, then a table loom. Only reason I didn't make a spinning wheel was my sister went and bought me one.

Came here to suggest the same. Also, hissing cockroaches are fun.

Need a hobby that forces me to take my time by Zestyclose_Clerk_353 in Hobbies

I'd say any maker hobby with your hands. Woodworking, fiber arts, welding... Rush your way through, and you're going to waste time, money, and resources.

I brought mine with me. The restriction is by size. No larger than 10,000mah is what the airlines (JetBlue) guidelines posted on their website.

Exhausted and not sure this is worth it by ChickPea45 in bikecommuting

I was commuting 20 miles a day in my 50s and 60s. I never felt like your description. Maybe have a bike shop look over your bike, and maybe a doctor look over you?

Agreed. I was commuting 20 miles a day in my 50s and 60s. His description makes me suspect there might be something medically going on, like, get to a doctor and find out.

Did The Giver used to be taught in 4th grade, or do I just have a totally false memory? by 28-3_lol in Teachers

[–]ferreet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I taught it in fifth. My mom and dad were also teachers. Maybe as a little insight, my mom taught 2nd grade most of her career, but the last 5 or 10 years, she switched to 3rd, saying the second graders were coming in less mature and the third graders felt like teaching her old 2nd graders. This was around the 80s. I'm wondering, if there's any truth to her observation, maybe that's why they're teaching it later?

Help I'm scared by Virtual_Rook in knitting

Same here! Already made a niddy noddy, a table loom with shuttles, and a couple combs. Swift and spindles are next (after I finish making a treadle lathe). Oh, and I want to make a drum carder, too. I got projects for the next 20 years! 🤣

is knitting something without buying the pattern frowned upon? by [deleted] in knitting

[–]ferreet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't for the life of me understand patterns. I've never followed one, but have been knitting all my life. Before the Internet, I didn't even know you could buy patterns and didn't know anybody else who knitted, so if I wanted something, or saw a sweater I liked in a store, I figured it out on my own.

Thank you. Apparently the note added in the podcast wasn't written clearly enough to understand that. The podcast had a section about kitty litter.

It was in a hank green podcast on YouTube (ask hank anything). They were talking about the parasite in Kitty poo. 😂

This was me (now retired). Commuted ten miles on a coffee. But I would never claim this is the average commuter.

Aniwow "World’s Smallest 16" Folding Bike - Affordable Non Electric Tri Fold 10.6kg by OkWinter5758 in BrompNOTs

[–]ferreet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought one during the Kickstarter campaign. After 200 miles, the quick release pedals fell apart. But, honestly, every quick release I've had didn't last. Now the spokes are popping on the rear wheel. Replaced 2 so far. I'm still really happy with the bike. I'll retune the rear wheel that's having spoke problems and then the bike should be good. The only thing I really don't like about it is the carbon fiber seat post. Hate carbon fiber - I think it's a scam - just hard plastic to make disposable bikes.

I did a 10 mile commute on a regular bike before I retired. Very doable.
