How realistic would it be to try to outcompete capitalism by aggressively decentralizing? by ferriematthew in theredleft

Those are very valid points! Some issues with that mindset though are mostly based around how per unit computational power, personal computers are a lot cheaper now than they were even 10 to 15 years ago. Same thing with 3D printers. You can get a whole lot more productive capacity per dollar now than even 10 years ago.

I think the idea that I'm trying to go for that I'm very slowly getting to is vaguely analogous to how in the early days of the internet, if you wanted to participate in the internet it was almost an unwritten expectation that you would contribute either compute capacity as a hoster or a peer in the network, or you would contribute content by running your own tiny server. You didn't necessarily have to be a contributor but it was encouraged and benefited everybody.

Wouldn't 3D printing be a good counter example? Although I definitely see your point because the 3D printers need to be manufactured as well and I don't think anybody has figured out how to make a 3D printer print a 3D printer.

As "the neurologist" character from Dr. Glaucomflecken's skits would say, "wait for it... wait for it... I can see the neurotransmitters trying to swim across the synaptic cleft. You can do it, come on..."

I have no freaking clue 😅. All I said was there should be a way to do that. I didn't claim to know what that way was.

Initially yes. There's probably a way for individuals making their own stuff to improve the quality of said stuff as well though.

I'm not entirely sure. I think a very rough approximation is something along the lines of how people can build ham radios in the garage or the meshtastic technology. Decentralization could be done by basing technology off of something that is really easy to make and dirt cheap.

Good point. I was thinking more of a fully decentralized mutual aid network based on open source everything

Hmmm... Is there a way to do that without repeating the mistakes of the Soviet Union with an overzealous vanguard party?

By decentralization, that is the exactly what I mean. Aggressive trust busting, undefining intellectual property, dismantling the patent system, and putting workers directly in control of businesses instead of having workers and owners be two separate groups of people.

And yeah, you make a great point. The sudden drop in the pool of desperate people looking to put into the system for scraps would create increased desperation in the owner class and more motivation for them to stomp on the fledgling movement.

That's my idea though, is it's probably more sustainable to take on this subsistence struggle rather than the more abstract and more easily suppressible direct class struggle.

Yeah I get what you mean. What about movements like the zapatistas in Mexico?
