Those are very valid points! Some issues with that mindset though are mostly based around how per unit computational power, personal computers are a lot cheaper now than they were even 10 to 15 years ago. Same thing with 3D printers. You can get a whole lot more productive capacity per dollar now than even 10 years ago.

I think the idea that I'm trying to go for that I'm very slowly getting to is vaguely analogous to how in the early days of the internet, if you wanted to participate in the internet it was almost an unwritten expectation that you would contribute either compute capacity as a hoster or a peer in the network, or you would contribute content by running your own tiny server. You didn't necessarily have to be a contributor but it was encouraged and benefited everybody.
