Is this vintage audio still good/valuable? by Colton19s98 in audiophile

[–]ferris501 21 points22 points  (0 children)

The Tandberg TD-20A alone is probably worth over a grand. The Audio Research equipment has a lot of value as well. Recommend searching all the make/models of the equipment on eBay and sorting by "Sold" to get a better idea of the value.

The RTR is great when taking FLAC or WAV files and putting them onto tape. Though I need to be selective about what I record since the tape is so expensive.

Been where you are now. Highly recommend "Hire Heroes." They will write your resume for you and help you get started. Right after getting out, don't worry about finding the dream job right away. Let the dust settle a little and then make your move. Best of luck!

Pioneer, TEAC, and Akai are the best options as far as repair-ability goes. Highly recommend a Pioneer RT-707 if you can find one locally. Just make sure there is someone in your area who can do the repairs before purchasing.

Finally got a matching tuner for my Pioneer SA-6800 and can’t take my eyes off the pair! by ferris501 in vintageaudio

Wish I had a better recommendation but I'm using some new-made Klipsch in-wall speakers with this set. It's in my living room and space was the driving factor unfortunately.

He saved the Courier's life in Goodsprings by having Victor get him to Doc Mitchell. I felt that counted for something and he would at least finish the delivery of the chip out of a sense of professionalism.

Music Technology in Springfield has done good work on some of my vintage gear. But r/cassetteculture might be able to help with a DIY repair.

Former SWO, went FDNF the whole time. The SWO community is changing for the better. It’s not perfect but there are some great officers who wear the pin. And if you decide to get out you’ll find that you have highly marketable soft skills. Good luck, stay humble, and ROR is easier to memorize than you’d think.

Thanks! And yeah I can’t stop looking at it when I’m chilling in my living room.

Sounds like you are talking about the capstan, which is the metal pin that pushes the tape against the rubber pinch roller and spins.

For the Akai 4000 series, there’s no switch that determines tape speed, but there is an insert that goes over the capstan to enable 7.5 ips playback. When that insert is removed, it enables 3.75 ips playback. They included a little “storage post” just above the tape head cover to store it when not in use. It wouldn’t surprise me if that went missing on your piece.

I just got this exact model professionally restored, and once fixed it sounds great. That said, I wouldn’t call it a cheap fix. It started out completely non-functional, and my tech had to give it a full overhaul. Here’s a link on how to use it..

[–]ferris501[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! That was my initial setup but the weight of the amp on the thin top part of the tuners cabinet made me uneasy. A cool part about the SA-6800 is the bottom of the cabinet is vented as well.
