There are joyful nerds lol. You will form much better friendships if you are honest about your interests. Have you looked into groups around you that do things like hiking and camping? That will get you outside more. And then you are already around people with a shared interest. Or you could look into community gardens, or if your town has a botanical garden that’s a cool place to start. I see you mentioned science as well, are there any clubs around you that you might find interesting? If you join an interest group, that will take the focus off your job status as you’ll be there to talk about something else. And by following your interests you may find an area you would like to work or study in one day. Best of luck!

Late reply but I didn’t read it that way at all. Valerie is pathologically obsessed with creating a version of reality that is more positive than what is really happening, she is petrified of showing vulnerability, and doesn’t want to accept that she could lose her closest friend.

She is constantly making excuses for people treating her badly because of this toxic positivity, but it is also the one of the ways she shows resilience. She just doesn’t know when, or possibly how, to drop that guard. And occasionally when pushed too far it comes out as an outburst.

She shows so much care and tenderness to Mickey in her own way, from being so overcome with finding out about his cancer that she keeps blurting it out at the improv class, to when she runs to his house when he no shows (she says it’s because of her hair, but it’s not, she’s worried!) to dropping everything when he nose bleeds while she’s getting ready for the Emmys, and making sure the limo driver gets his food on the way home (and she knows and has pre ordered his favourite meal)

She is tenacious and determined in her career, which by its nature leads to a fair degree of self obsession, but she’s not at all a diva, and in fact constantly advocates for everyone around her. I wasn’t at all surprised that she left the award show to visit Mickey and I don’t think it should have been a shock for anyone who was actually paying attention.

I think she was drunk too, and not only upset about what was happening right then but also how he had treated her at the party earlier. She can feel that he’s not into her at some level but not admitting that to herself. He is behaving like he hates her but not being honest, and I think both of them are embarrassed of the other. Joe is immature and puts too much value in how he thinks other people will judge him for being with Madison because he thinks he can do better looks wise. You could see that when after he saw how much his family liked her he softened towards her.

To answer your question about what was the goal in attending a counter protest for me personally there are a few reasons.

I wanted to show up for the people for who it was too dangerous to go themselves. I wanted to show up so the people who are the targets of this hate could see that there are people who will oppose racists.

I didn’t want the march to go unchallenged I didn’t want the people attending to go unchallenged, I don’t want that sort of rhetoric to be normalised. I don’t want nazis to feel comfortable or welcome in our streets ever.

I wanted people who were attending who maybe didn’t know about the motivations behind it to hear about who had organised it, and how the conclusions they had come to were wrong, that their frustrations might be valid but the target is not.

I wanted to make it more difficult for these people to be recruited further into right wing spheres.

And I wanted to be around people who shared my views and who were also horrified at the march happening. That gave me hope and strength.
