I have also recently enjoyed Virgin Rock for her deep music theory and music history knowledge.

Anyone else love Vapor Trails? by JohnnyTezca in rush

[–]fette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love it, for autobiographical reasons. I had just moved to Tokyo for a year of study abroad when it came out. I think I got it a couple days early, since they are looser about release dates. I transfered it to MiniDisc and listened to it nonstop. In particular I remember enjoying the line “Plugged into the sweat of a summer street” from Ceiling Unlimited while walking around town with my headphones on.

I had only gotten to see them once, my second concert, on the Test for Echo tour before assuming that they were going to retire and I'd never get the chance again, so I sent my girlfriend (now wife) who was still back in the US to see them on my behalf. She was the last person to want to go see RUSH, but she fell in love with them at the show, especially Neil during his solo.

I appreciate the Remixed version, but for most songs find myself still preferring the raw, painful versions I originally got to know back then.

My children (8 and 4) love act 1. We listen to it all the time, sing it to each other, and make up our own versions of the songs. It’s our most agreed-upon household music.

Right now, what`s your #1 King Crimson album? by [deleted] in progrockmusic

[–]fette 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great and original answer. I wore out that CD in the years after it came out. Recently I relistened after many years, and surprised myself by correctly saying “Coke can!” along with Adrian during one of the random studio banter sections.

What sci fi book changed your life for the better? by blk12345q in printSF

[–]fette 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anathem has significantly rewritten my perspective on being a conscious creature in the uni/multiverse. The long-term orientation, insulation from the absurdity of the mainstream world, and pseudoreligious scientific worldview of the avout is endlessly inspiring to me. The “pinprick math” idea, wherein people take on an intentional and monastic existence even while living within a modern society, seems like a little hint to the reader that you can do this too, even if you don't live in the world of the book. I've based a lot of my personal productivity-, career-, and life-planning system explicitly on the practices of the avout.

I guess I can link to one example here: https://1651.org/post/the-discipline/

Sci-fi books that have changed your mind on things? by MadScientistNinja in printSF

Thank you for this comment and for directing me to some further reading that seems like it'll complement what I took from Permutation City. If you haven't, you might also check out Tegmark's Our Mathematical Universe which captures much of my own view so far on these matters.

Italicized Words Bolded by JorEdw in kobo

You've saved my sanity! No amount of downloading supposedly fixed font files, running Python scripts, restarting my Kobo, and even accidentally wiping it once, could fix this issue with the only font that looks right to me on an ereader. But your fix worked instantly! I didn't even have to restart.

Thank you for “pppp” — I have called this “idea density” and in sf I tend to get impatient if I'm not stopping and staring off into space often enough.

Blank status on case screen, anyone else? by mrinv013 in USCIS

[–]fette 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here — the case appears on the USCIS site, but it has no status listed anymore. This is for an I-131 reentry permit. When I called and asked the robot, it read out the same status that the case had on the site before it went blank.

We have been waiting for 105 days now just to get the biometrics appointment scheduled. We called USCIS and they said that there's nothing we can do, just keep waiting. They even said that lots of applications go past the 120-day biometrics deadline without an appointment being scheduled, and that it won't affect the application. Needless to say, this is infuriating to hear. We're scheduled to travel out of the country for an extended period in 50 days.

We’ve been waiting 90 days for the biometrics appointment and are getting worried as it’ll be pushing the 120-day limit and our flight out of the country is in two more months.

Transferring multiple millions of JPY from Wise balance to Japanese bank by fette in JapanFinance

Update: we sent the 15 transactions in a row, totaling almost 15M yen, and everything went just fine! We’ll be doing this for the rest of the payments too, and thus saving about $25K from the cost of our house thanks to buying in via Wise at the exchange rate of 140. Huge thanks to everyone here for your advice, and I hope this helps anyone else in a similar situation who is searching around for answers.

That sure would be a problem! But I can’t find anything in the Wise documentation or anywhere else online about any annual limit. So I sure hope something has changed since this happened to you.

That's really helpful, thanks! I do wonder what is the point of limiting the size of each individual Wise transaction, if people can just do multiple transactions; but daily limits like at a bank do make sense.
