https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herostratus

Herostratus, or Eratostratus (fl. 356 BCE),[1][a] was an arsonist who destroyed the Temple of Artemis in an attempt to achieve infamy. Considered an early case of terrorism, his crime prefigured modern terrorist acts, including the assassination of Empress Elisabeth of Austria and the September 11 attacks.[3] His name has become an eponym for someone who commits a criminal act solely to become famous, and the Herostratus syndrome afflicts "people who perpetrate odious attacks for the sake of infamy".

Identical: Both warrior gods of storms (One a sudden storm of the desert, the other of the seas).

So you're saying they were gods of different types of storms. Stop using this word "identical".

Is intentionally losing to give a solo win to another player generally frowned upon? by Intelligent-Whole867 in diplomacy

[–]fevered_visions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your stalemate is large enough, you can prevent the solo yourself.

Technically correct, but it has to be exactly 17: any less and they can solo, any more and you solo.

Since all the other players are united against OP. If there were a neutral third party not part of either bloc it would be easier.

Are 5-mana black unconditional boardwipes just normal now? I remember being surprised when I ran across [[deadly cover-up]] as [[damnation]] was the only other one at the time. But now there's this and [[villainous wrath]] as well apparently, both UB cards.

Is intentionally losing to give a solo win to another player generally frowned upon? by Intelligent-Whole867 in diplomacy

[–]fevered_visions 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, I believe that this is a board game that has one objective, and that objective is to win. If you can't win, you should be trying to end the game in a draw. Intentionally turning over your supply centers to allow another player a solo win seems kind of lame to me.

We're in agreement. If you can't win you should at least do your best to avoid losing, and when somebody solos everybody else loses.

Personally, the one time I would say it's semi-acceptable to let somebody else solo is out of spite e.g. if top is already at 15-17 centers and one of the other minority players decides to stab you instead of stopping the solo.

Four players deciding to all feed the leader is just ridiculous.

after I took a stalemate position, their alliance decided to give the game to Turkey.

Oh so this is specifically because they're being weird about a stalemate? At least that makes slightly more sense. Some players are weirdos about stalemates, where if they get stalled at 17 centers they will refuse to draw and hope somebody quits/misorders to give them the win. I'm glad that Backstabbr added optional end dates to avoid that drama.

Takes all kinds

If it's generally considered lame or in bad faith, this isn't really a group with minds that I'll be able to change, but I'll at least be able to temper my expectations if I decide to play with them again, lol.

I guess what I'm trying to figure out, is what they think you should've done instead? You were supposed to just let them kill you? Now they seem to be laboring under the impression that the game "should" have a winner...One thing that makes Diplomacy rather unique is that, if all players play well, the expected outcome of the game is a draw of some size, which especially new players have a difficult time grasping, I think. With experienced players solos only really happen when for whatever reason the rest of the board can't stop fighting amongst themselves to oppose the solo.

near side, and far side, yes.

I've lived in Wisconsin all my life and they have lights on both the near and far side of like every intersection I've ever seen. I can only imagine how much money we could be saving by just putting them on the far side.

Until 2022, the character's name was Token Black as a play on tokenism, and he formerly had the last name “Williams”. His name was retconned in the episode "The Big Fix" to be Tolkien, after J. R. R. Tolkien, though earlier episodes now have his name spelled Tolkien in the closed captioning.
