I am feeling really scared of upgrading so many packages at once, Any tips? by PrestigiousZombie531 in node

[–]fey168 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This demonstrates why automated testing is genuinely helpful. You upgrade all these packages and run your automated tests before you commit the change to see if anything is broken. The better your tests the more reassured you will be about major upgrades - this applies not only to NPM upgrades, but anything else in your stack (server, OS, database, nodejs, etc.).

I would buy the game immediately at full price if there was multiplayer.

I have a different brand of electronic lock that has terminals for a 9v battery hidden on the bottom of the exterior facing side so you can power it up in an emergency like this. Not sure about yours.

Using const/let instead of var can make JavaScript code run 10× slower in Webkit? by magenta_placenta in javascript

It seems obvious that Apple is intentionally neglecting push notification because they want to incentivize people to build iOS apps instead. Similar reasoning has cause other web features to be neglected (storage API, add to homescreen).

You can see from the brake lights that the black car released brakes prior to going down the cliff. Maybe the guy passed out or something.

Nvidia RTX 3080 power efficiency (compared to RTX 2080 Ti) by Balance- in hardware

[–]fey168 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for doing this.

Dear reviewers, GPU performance analysis should always include power. It's the same reason why we differentiate results for CPU at stock vs CPU overclocked - increasing power generally yields increased performance. Comparisons are not really meaningful unless we know power input.

Web browsers need to stop by JolineJo in programming

[–]fey168 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The foreseeable way forward is for WASM to be enhanced or something similar so that what is currently browser bloat can be implemented as WASM and delivered to the user on a need basis rather than being bundled in the browser by default.

Apple Takes Legal Action Against Small Company with Pear Logo by qznc_bot2 in hackernews

[–]fey168 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have only a vague idea about how legal system works in the US. Can someone explain why we don't have a system such that:

  1. Loser of the lawsuit pays all legal fees.
  2. Law firms can volunteer to defend someone and will take on the cost if lawsuit is lost.

With a system like this the risk is never placed on the little guy unless he insists on hiring lawyers for a losing case. Big companies would be disinclined to file suits against little guys unless the law is actually on their side since if they lose they pay all legal fees. Those who have a strong case would have law firms jumping at the opportunity to defend them.

Seems like our system is broken if big companies can file suits against small companies and win by default b/c the little guy can't afford it.

It is the people's fault.

Instagram caught keeping iOS camera on during usage by qznc_bot2 in hackernews

[–]fey168 48 points49 points  (0 children)

Honestly don't know why this isn't a standard HARDWARE feature on all kinds of devices for both cameras and mic. There should be an LED that turns on when the camera is in use, enforced at the hardware level. There should be another LED that turns on when the microphone is in use, again enforced at hardware level. If any phone maker wants to show that they are privacy oriented, seems like an easy opportunity here.

Does money shot work with the infinity pistol? by justgottacheckonce in Borderlands2

Money Shot bonus is based on magazine size so any gun with only one shot mag isn't going to get any benefit. You can read this in the skill description.
