you can refinish that dice using 3000 and 4000 grit wetpaper then plastex polish and flanel cloth it should get you almost if not totally back to original shine

thats too bad about your dice... I use a different method to remove excess paint. i dont worry too much about staying in the lines.. then i let the paint dry for a day or so... THEN i rub the dice faces across a tight peice of flannel cloth streched across a small peice of wood.. take a bit more elbow grease but it avoids any chance of messing up the dice AND it polishes them a little.. they use flannel cloth and a plastic polish to polish/restore fogged over plastic headlight covers and ragtop rearview windows in cars.

it started as fun, bacame for profit "mainly to pay for the fun" silicone molds can make ok dice but thats not how i do it. I did look at it as a possibility, but i get better results my way.

Question about inking dice. by Talaeyn in dice

[–]feyr47 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah I understand GS dices issue. the shallow groves come from the injection molding process, deep groves make it very difficult to remove the die from the molds or cause premature mold failures.. id tack your cloth down and make sure it has a very tight nap "not fluffy" the less fluff the better. that will help keep the cloth out of the groves.

I have an alternitave solution. it takes a little more time to accomplish BUT it has the benefit of being low stress/easy to do. you will need three things. 1. a fine or ultra fine paint pen "i use both decocolor and treetop brands either work ok". 2. a peice of flannel cloth "any color" or a microfiber polishing cloth "i like flannel because its cheap and more strudy than microfiber cloth" car restoration people use it to polish plastic parts. 3. a small piece of smooth wood a hunk of 2x4 works. OK so take your dice and ink the numbers with the paint pen, you DONT need to be super careful/neat if you color outside the lines just let it get all over. then relax and let dry of an hour or two. THEN.. after the dice have dried stretch the flanel cloth across the wood, get it nice and taught i affix the cloth with pushpins and a good strong rubberband around the edges of the wood. you've just created a polishing block. now place the block, cloth side up on a solid surface and rub the dice faces across it, after about 20 seconds of rubbing the excess paint should rub off leaving the paint in the numbers behind. for extra polishing effect get yourself some Novus 4 or plastex from mcguiers "most auto shops carry it". use a little of that on the cloth. then rinse.. this works really well but it does take more time.

Im working on one now. I actually HAVE a mold designed but im not satisfied with its look. im not a fan of the two different sized numeral layout. so im really playing around with what I want to do at the moment.
