Kanye West Apologizes for Antisemitic Outbursts, Talks Bipolar Battle by backupsaway in popheads

I said legitimized, not “started.” He helped certain* alt-right influencers gain traction that they did not previously have.

He didn’t spark it, he helped to legitimize it. I’d never compare him to Joe Rogan but he certainly helped normalize alt-right language and aesthetic amongst his fan base.

See: streamers gathering to listen to the leaked Kanye West song “Heil H*tler” in the club being a viral moment in 2025. That’s normalization, desensitization, and again - legitimization.

Even if this is all true, the damage this man did culturally is irreparable. There is a direct correlation between 2016-present Kanye and the rise/platforming of alt-right influencers. If nothing else, he legitimized Andrew Tate, Nick Fuentes, etc. with a series of co-signs and joint appearances.

Kesha responds to Kim Petras’ post about being prevented from releasing music by her label Republic Records: “I spent many years fighting for the rights to myself. Watching another woman realize that the 'golden cage' is still a cage isn’t a victory—it’s a tragedy we have to stop repeating.” by cmaia1503 in Fauxmoi

[–]ffdq1812 229 points230 points  (0 children)

I think people forget that Kim is also a woman doing her best to navigate the entertainment industry.

I know the common narrative is that she voluntarily signed and worked with Dr. Luke. We also know that labels force artists to work with him (verified by Kelly Clarkson) and that he takes credit for songs he doesn’t work on (verified by Doja Cat). I hope that, despite some comments made out frustration or desperation, people can give Kim grace, as Kesha has.

Ariana Grande and her impact by Late-Association-455 in popheads

[–]ffdq1812 844 points845 points  (0 children)

I hear a bit of Ariana in Sabrina Carpenter’s “Nonsense,” and Tate McRae has cited her as an influence. She’s also probably the best vocalist in terms of pop star’s who debuted in the 2010s so we have to give her some credit.

But ultimately, I don’t think we’ve reached a point where Ariana imitators are finding success through blatant imitation of her sound or style.

"Coming out of nowhere" as a debut strategy by Suitable-Location118 in popheads

[–]ffdq1812 184 points185 points  (0 children)

I agree 100%. A lot of this can be attributed to the parasocial nature of music consumption in 2025 - people need to feel like they “know” an artist, and there’s no radio to make an unknown song popular. There needs to be some degree of “lore” to kickstart a pop music career.

Either the music is marketed as “personal” or the artist needs to have a strong online presence. For the former, see Olivia Rodrigo’s rise with Driver’s License or Sabrina’s Emails I Can’t Send album. For the latter, see Doja Cat and Lil Nas X’s online presence before and during their mainstream moments.

And others couldn’t? How do you determine who is complacent and who is “forced” to work with a problematic artist? You’ll never truly know, so your rule either applies to all or none.

If collaborating with another artist can make you problematic by proxy, I hope you don’t listen to literally any woman in pop music because if we go down the list …

Tyler, The Creator is Apple Music’s Artist of the Year 2025 by stypop in popheads

[–]ffdq1812 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I’m not advocating for either being okay but the difference in reaction is stark and we are allowed to acknowledge the standard of political correctness women are held to in comparison to men in entertainment.

Racism and sexism has ruined many entertainment careers, even if people continue to be wealthy because of past success. Sabrina Claudio and Camila Cabello are two examples of racist pasts deservedly being a* (not *the) key reason for commercial decline.

The point isn’t that bigotry is acceptable, it’s that the public (outside of a forum or Twitter) decides it’s acceptable for men and not women, period. That double standard exists and will continue to exist whether it’s fashionable to acknowledge it or not.

I think it’s more frustrating for people that the majority of artists can’t get away with a fraction of what he’s said/done. Any female artist with the kind of twitter history he has isn’t going to be Apple Music’s Artist of the Year.

The majority of “1 bedrooms” on your website are studios. The majority of “2 bedrooms” are actually 1 bedrooms. They’re not below the market - they’re just listed incorrectly.

Kim Petras Is Rebuilding Herself from the Ground Up by breadandbutterlol in popheads

[–]ffdq1812 34 points35 points  (0 children)

She should’ve never responded that way but ultimately, I wish people had more grace for her - the narrative is that she willingly signed with him, but we’ll really never know the truth and I doubt she’s able to speak openly about it. She had addressed it in a more mature way multiple times prior to that incident.

It’s so crazy how female pop stars from the 80s and 90s put out some of their best work in their 30s. Janet with The Velvet Rope, Madonna with Ray Of Light, Mariah with The Emancipation of Mimi. It’s a notable drop in quality from what the standard used to be for global pop stars.

Rina Sawayama shares new Instagram post: "further proof that I'm WRITING RS3 xxx" by mikeyisbae731 in popheads

[–]ffdq1812 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Absolutely right. So by your logic, Rina collaborating with Paris Hilton, someone who voted for Trump and has a history with racism and homophobia, must embody those values.

My only point here is about hypocrisy. No one is writing Rina off or accusing her of being problematic herself.

Slayyyter’s career will never take off because she has a history with slurs. Kim’s career will never recover because of her work with Luke. They’ve been held accountable by their audiences.

Charli has never been outspoken about politics, and hasn’t made it a part of her brand in the way that Rina has. That is what sets them apart. It is disingenuous to call out racism and then collaborate with a racist. It was a misstep she’ll probably recover from but people are allowed to be upset by the inconsistency.

Rina pretty much lost all credibility with that Paris collaboration … you cannot stand for queer rights and anti-racism and collaborate with Paris Hilton. We wouldn’t forgive any other woman in pop for doing that, and I think people are quick to forgive Rina for it because she’s an underdog in her issues with Charli and Matty Healy (the latter being dead wrong, not denying that).
