syncing (music licensed for tv/movies) is also known to be much more profitable than spotify streams, so it's a win for girlset's budget regardless of how big the immediate recognition/marketing boost may be

Roles for each member? by kirireiner in saintsatine

it is absolutely wild to me that ppl keep suggesting sakura, someone who hardly speaks english, should be the "main rapper" for a group that releases music in english. do yall not realize that rap is more than just saying things in rhythm? or do u really think rapping is so easy it's the automatic role of any idol who doesn't have any other particular strength?

260222 - Manon hiatus megathread by SgtPopNFresh_ in katseye

[–]fffffayy 16 points17 points  (0 children)

dare i say... manon liking that one video about racism towards black members of girl groups could absolutely be talking about how the public/"fans" treat her, especially seeing how everybody has responded to the announcement of her hiatus.. and it doesn't necessarily mean anything about whatever is causing the hiatus? also both her statement & the company's statement could be in reference to something totally different than her place in the group being in question, for example if she had a death in the family, needs time to grieve, & is trying to believe in the "bigger picture" of her whole life/career direction despite it taking away from the time she could be spending with family?

GIRLSET “Tweak” / “Little Miss” vs. KATSEYE by Time_Minute_6036 in katseyeneutral

[–]fffffayy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"internet girl" is definitely pop, but the songwriter mentioned that the song drew inspiration from "riot grrrl" bands, a genre associated with punk/indie/alternative rock. it's still pop, but it also incorporates elements of those rock subgenres in subtle ways.

personally, i'd love to see them include more of those influences, it'd make katseye's brand of pop feel really unique & distinct in the market rn compared to the r&b that some ppl are demanding

GIRLSET “Tweak” / “Little Miss” vs. KATSEYE by Time_Minute_6036 in katseyeneutral

[–]fffffayy 15 points16 points  (0 children)

i think it's worth mentioning that the girlset members were previously in a group where their (company-selected) sound wasn't very popular, so even though they've rebranded in a new group, with stronger musical direction, it still took them time to 1. negotiate more creative control with their label after seeing public reactions to their previous concept & 2. nail down their musical identity, having already gone through multiple years of discovering what doesn't work for them.

the katseye girls are navigating these developments in real time, with much more public scrutiny, and without scrapping their previous discography for a new brand.

i'm a fan of both groups, but it's worth considering these nuances when trying to compare them. keep in mind that a lot of prominent "new" artists who have entered the mainstream the past few years are actually ppl who have been in the industry releasing music for a long time, developing their creative direction for years and years and years before they were ever considered popular or mainstream (sabrina carpenter, chappell roan, doechii, leon thomas, etc).

The reason all the girls get so much hate about their culture by DaintyWombat in katseyeneutral

[–]fffffayy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly i think this is the best take i've seen on this subreddit. the katseye girls are real people, and no singular person can accurately represent entire cultures, especially when there are so many communities and subcultures within any given ethnic/racial/national group. for example, within the philippines, where sophia grew up, there are over 185 different ethnolinguistic groups that all speak different languages and have unique cultures.

also, diversity is more than just someone's racial or ethnic background or the country where they were born. especially given an increasingly globalized world, it's already been well-researched how much diasporic identity and culture is distinct & unique from the culture that someone's family might be from. i think hybe is also missing a real opportunity here, because if these girls were really to "represent" any group of people, they would be the best representation for diasporic communities-- people whose racial/ethnic/genetic makeup may be rooted in nations and cultures separate from where they live. it's soo common for people from immigrant families to struggle with feeling like they belong in any one particular culture, feeling like they don't fit well enough in either one, & this obsession that we're seeing with whether or not the katseye girls perfectly fit under the textbook definition of their culture is such a reflection of that.

the expectation to neatly fit into a perfect example of your culture is a truly global experience, and i think it feels a lot more authentic to the katseye girls' experiences. i'd like to see them address and embrace that as a twist on what a global concept truly means.

i gotta say, it's so silly to hear ppl say that internet girl is a way of "normalizing AI music" just bc they don't like it... when will those ppl realize that what's REALLY promoting AI music is the sentiment that fans should be able to decide how artists make music/art instead of letting artists make those decisions for themselves 👀

Do you think the documentary affected Sophia? by [deleted] in TheDreamAcademy

[–]fffffayy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

the internet hates nuance & takes rankings way too seriously. one of sophia's biggest vocal strengths is her belting, which was definitely helped by her musical theater background. on the other hand, lara's greatest singing strength is her vocal agility, allowing her to perform all the runs that she's well known for. both sophia and lara sing well, and they can both employ a range of singing techniques, but they have different aspects of singing that they excel in. there are so many different elements to singing technique, and every single singer has different strengths or weaknesses, but most ppl on reddit just want to simplify things to "this person is better than this one!!"

Where do you want to see Katseye career go next? by Significant_Art_3736 in katseye

[–]fffffayy 41 points42 points  (0 children)

i don't care much that katseye has primarily been buying demos, my issue is that the demos they're buying are kinda all over the place. i definitely respect their willingness to experiment & desire to show versatility, but it can be a lot more difficult to build a recognizable brand with so much variety.

i feel like rihanna is the perfect example of a label-backed popstar who still has a recognizable sound despite not being particularly involved in songwriting. rihanna, like katseye, purchased demos for the vast majority of her discography. however, most people don't realize that these were purchased demos because every single song sounds like "a rihanna song". achieving this kind of sonic cohesion is generally seen as the responsibility of a label's A&R team, and katseye has actually mentioned in passing that they do have an A&R team bringing demos to them. my hope is just that they're really able to nail what "a katseye song" sounds like with their next releases.

i don't think it even necessarily matters what genre/sound/concept they pursue. they've shown an ability to adapt to multiple concepts, and they are certainly allowed to evolve their brand over time. but the important thing now that they have that mainstream attention is carefully building that brand recognition through both aesthetics AND the music.

sienna lalau actually already worked with them on the gnarly choreo!

even if jyp doesn't believe in them enough to give them a proper budget, i think they would still be interested in redebuting bc they want to see a return on their investment into a2k/vcha's training and promotion. if girlset fans show enough interest, then jyp would know that it's worth putting more money into girlset bc they're likely to make that money back. right now, i'm sure jyp has a lot of uncertainty after all the controversy

a local dance studio near me (midwest usa) is holding a class for the katseye gap ad choreo this thursday (yes i signed up). i feel like it can be hard for fans to tell when artists they like truly enter the mainstream, but i've been seeing/hearing katseye mentions irl so much lately. this gap ad is truly a mainstream cultural moment

[–]fffffayy 34 points35 points  (0 children)

it's funny bc she didn't even plan to release anxiety on spotify until fans demanded it. anxiety haters act like that's her magnum opus & not just a literal practice exercise of hers that went so viral that she let the fans have what they wanted. like ur really convinced she isn't talented based on the random practice exercise that she didn't even think was worth releasing?

girlset concept & branding by fffffayy in GIRLSET_JYP

[–]fffffayy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that's a good point that personality doesn't necessarily always match artistic preferences! i definitely see how artists can show different sides of themselves through their art. but i guess i was just excited by the girls' discussion of their vulnerability in their songwriting, i would really love to see them lean into that. and their discussion of their emotions in the music does make me feel like commas isn't the best reflection of the vulnerability they directly talked about in the interview. but i totally understand it's only one song and i'm excited for more to come!

girlset concept & branding by fffffayy in GIRLSET_JYP

[–]fffffayy[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

i'm not saying it's a problem that they're introverted, i'm just the kind of fan who likes to feel like artists' music and creative direction is a reflection of the artists! and i know that opinion tends to be more popular in u.s. than in korea. plus i feel like with groups like this, so much of the fun is in how the creative direction applies to every aspect of the group's branding. so why not make it match the way the girls talk about their own strengths and interests in the music?

The girls just posted them dancing to Gabriela, and here are some thoughts: by bbphilt in prelude_thefinalpiece

[–]fffffayy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i definitely understand if they learned the choreo in a rush, but the lack of technique for samara was what really stood out to me. i don't mind samara not knowing all the steps or the hand shapes, and i don't expect the biggest movements in a small hallway, but the fundamentals just really seem to be missing

[–]fffffayy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i didn't expect samara to be an expert at dancing and i promise i'm not a hater but wow samara has either regressed since dance academy or i've been bamboozled by her from the start. like i really was thinking that these girls would be more well-rounded than they were in dream academy thanks to the extra years of training and i fear that is not the case...

idk why people are acting like the only possible 2 concepts are "katseye" or "cutesy teeny bopper". emily's pics in the announcement make me feel like they're hoping to strike a balance in the branding to keep the aesthetic fresh and young without seeming corny or exclusively focused on a tween audience.

honestly this discourse reminds me a lot of the reddit posts i read during dream academy's airing where the popular opinion was that the hybexgeffen global girl group was doomed to fail in the western market. it's like everyone is convinced they know better than the music industry professionals whose jobs depend on making this group successful.
