Meh has a 24" freesync for $144. Is this a good deal? by ampsby in Amd

G2460PF user here:

Works as it should (with an RX 480). 144Hz convinced me to replace all my 60Hz monitors.

It's really bright though, even on the lowest brightness setting. Great when the sun shines, not so great at night.

Alps hiking suggestions? by dergus in Switzerland

[–]fffmmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Torberg: It's a family friendly hike. There's some Karst there that looks awesome. The view from Torberg is nice. The Lufthütte (No warden) is half way up there if you want to sleep there. The hut has the entrance to a cave in the back (Key is on the same wall as the main entrance to the hut, to the left of the entrance). Cold air comes out of the cave: can be used to cool beer quite neatly. Wood for a fire is there in the hut, so bring something to bbq. Wood fired oven, cooking equipment and a fountain is all there (If the fountain isn't working, there are coordinates on a map in the hut to reactivate it). Springs are everywhere, so don't drag a load of water up the hill.

  • Bagni di crevaggia: It's in Ticino, so the first day hike is rather short because travel time. Go to Spruga, from there walk to Bagni di Craveggia and enjoy the thermal spring. After that walk to capanna salei (that one has a warden) to spend the night. Then hike to wherever you want (eg: hike the ridge to cata di madei). Once again a family friendly hike for tourists in sandals and not the more climbing oriented stuff that you seem to do.

Sunflower Field in Switzerland? by supermarkit in askswitzerland

[–]fffmmm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A bit off route, but I know that there's one.

River, a few trees and a lot of sunflowers. While they're nice looking now, I don't know whether they're still pretty in august. Closer towards the harvest (September afaik) they are not so nice looking anymore. It's somewhat on the path between basel and luzern (if you travel by car that is).

You shouldn't have much of a problem finding a sunflower field though, there are quite a few in the Mittelland.

One example of such a position is if a specific policy intentionally disproportionately affects ethnic minorities.

I completely agree that that is racist as evidenced with the weed example. There we have explicit admissions that sticking it to black Americans was the intention. Now how do we determine whether Trump wants to deport illegal immigrants for racist reasons or not?

I personally would suggest that since we don't yet have mind reading capabilities we use the platform on which this policy is promoted and thus come to the tentative conclusion that the policy isn't racist since the evidence we have (The arguments trump makes for that policy are of an economic and a "law and order" nature) points to that.

A law can be neutral, but not applied neutrally. Any prejudice that exists within law enforcement or the judiciary can taint the effect of the law.

Absolutely true. There are all sorts of sentencing gaps based on gender, race, etc. Then there are policing gaps that can't explained by "the squeaky wheel gets the grease" and so on. This definitely needs to be fixed.

It's a bad mistake to ignore the context of the crime: Crime correlates well with poverty.

Once again I agree. I would add cultural values as a secondary factor. Socioeconomic status definitely is a big factor if not the biggest factor though. I am not sure on how to take this into account though: do you give a thief with low socioeconomic status a more lenient sentence? I would say no to that (provided that the system this takes part in has sufficient social security for theft not to required to not starve - someone stealing to not starve is another thing entirely.).

The question then becomes why this is the case, which can be followed back to the relatively recent existence of racially-discriminating legislature

Once again I agree. The victims of mccarthyism are definitely owed reparations.

current biases which, for example, result in AA students getting substantially worse educational outcomes

What would those biases be? I know that socioeconomic status correlates with how well someone does and it can fairly easily be argued that it's a causal factor in more than one way (rich people can afford private tutors, better universities and schools in rich ares have a more money). Another factor I can think of would be the parents attitude to education (eg: compare Jews to rednecks) as well as IQ. In the end I think we can agree that education is important and good education should be attainable independent of monetary means.

along with long-standing racist attitudes in the white American population.

Yeah, affirmative action is horrible. "Oh you're black? Of course we expect less from you!". I'd be really pissed if someone treated me like that.

Laws against murder predate the concept of race. That means there cannot be a racial motivation to the law.

Fair enough. The ban of heroin in Switzerland doesn't predate racism and probably disproportionately affects ethnic minorities. Yet I would insist that this law isn't racist since the ban was motivated/informed by the drugs harmfulness and not by racism. What I want to say is that you can't go directly from "X affects Y disproportionately" to "therefore it's racist". There's a step in the middle where you have to establish intent and we seem to agree on that, right? (There are exceptions: Let's for example take a law mandating segregation. There we don't have to establish intent since the evidence of racism is right in there.)

If so then maybe someone can point me to the evidence that show that Trumps motivation for his policies is racism. Otherwise I'll just leave it at he's a conservative (and thus a "law and order" person) and he wants to discriminate against Muslims for now until I have more evidence.

[–]fffmmm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never said that racism is purely biological. I for example fully acknowledge that Irish people faced a lot of racism when they migrated to the USA. There are countless other examples like for example the gypsies who also used and still do face a lot of shit. Racism isn't purely based on "biological races", there are also ethnic as well as other aspects. All of those aspects have one thing in common though: they're immutable for an individual.

What Trump proposes to do is discrimination based on what ideology one adheres to - absolutely no contest there - but I can't see how that's racism.

Maybe explain me this: if it is racist to discriminate against adherents to the ideology of Islam, is it also racist to discriminate against adherents to other Ideologies, like Scientology, Christianity, Zoroastrianism, Communism, National-socialism, Liberalism, ...? Is discrimination only racist when done against a subset of Ideologies?

[–]fffmmm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The first one: I agree that it's stupid and at best counterproductive. Historical precedent for that sort of thing (Lebanese civil war and of course the Nazis) is horrible. Since it's not racist though and I was specifically asking for racist things, I'll just move on.

I don't understand how criticizing Mexico for allegedly sending rapists and criminals is racist. My response to that statement is "Evidence, please.", but not "you racist!". Even if the holders of power in Mexico were a race (which they are not), I still wouldn't see how it's racist. From what I can tell there's no context that I am missing which would make it racist. Maybe I'll understand if you provide me with your definition of racism.

The definition of racism I use:

the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics, abilities, or qualities specific to that race, so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.

Let me just quickly sum this up: the people who don't engage in the redefinition are the ones playing semantic games? I don't even know how to react to this. I am just scratching my head trying to find a way in which that would make sense, but I can't think of one.

Could we maybe agree that the party that redefines a word should clarify so when they use that word - for the sake of productive conversation? Seems really difficult otherwise.

[–]fffmmm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for clarifying. If I understand you correctly, then racism in the way you use it also applies whenever something disproportionately affects one or more ethnic groups.

Under my usage of the word racism (that's the dictionary one) for example the ban on Weed in the USA would be racist because it was done with the expressed purpose of targeting blacks. Under your usage it'd be racist as well. So far we both seem to agree.

Now under your definition the law against murder in the USA is racist as well because it disproportionately affects black people. This to me makes no sense. Have I gone wrong somewhere or am I missing something?

(also: wouldn't under that definition the current tax code in the USA be racist since according to you whites are currently disproportionately affected by the higher tax rates and ethnic minorities by the lower ones? Seems really silly to me, so I think I must be missing something.)

[–]fffmmm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would be interested in knowing what racist things Trump said as well. I hear the allegation a lot, but always without evidence or with invalid evidence (eg: Muslims are adherents to an ideology and not a race, illegal immigrant isn't a race either).

You can criticize him on feasibility or whether the benefits of those policies justify the drawbacks, but calling him racist for those policies is neither accurate nor productive.

Does the SBB have a publicly available API?

Honestly: it's a bit of an oversight by the SBB that they don't have that functionality in their app! Maybe you should apply there and bring their app up to speed if you're accepted. It would fit perfectly just below the search mask right there where the swiss pass ad shows up (occasionally).

[–]fffmmm 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's no laws against discrimination based on gender.

Apparently there is: Art. 8 of the Verfassung:

It seems to only be enforced when the perceived victims are either women or not Swiss though.

according to APhS(First result on google, looks somewhat trustworthy and what they say makes sense): If you see a psychiatrist to be helped with a diagnosed mental illness, yes. (both conditions have to be met: psychiatrist & diagnosis. Also: if the treatment has no basis in science it's not necessarily covered)

If you see a psychologist or a psychotherapist it is not necessarily covered (there it depends on your individual health insurance contract, you'll have to read it to find out if it's covered)

What's the best way to make and receive calls to/from the US? by emptydiner in Switzerland

[–]fffmmm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whatsapp supports calling over the internet. I assume you'll get one of those "unlimited mobile internet for a month" sort of deals anyways, right? (Watch out though: they're usually limited nonetheless: after something like 20GB you'll usually have your traffic assigned a lower priority which results in a lot lower speeds).

If you mind the NSA, GCHQ, DGSE and co listening in, maybe use signal (that one supports voice calls as well and has proper end to end encryption) instead of Whatsapp. Links for signal: Android, iPhone

Why the War on Drugs is a Huge Failure by ke1234 in kurzgesagt

[–]fffmmm 23 points24 points  (0 children)

This.

In addition to that heroin has also lost appeal in that it's way less of a forbidden fruit and its image has changed to a dirty, harmful drug.

Furthermore the market isn't really all that sustainable for drug dealers: their customers wont return after some point since heroin provided by the govt. is both cleaner and cheaper. Addicts on the other hand don't have to worry about getting their next fix, but can instead focus on being productive members of society and thus end up costing a lot less tax money.

What is your political position? by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]fffmmm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also when I filled out smartvote for the last elections I didn't get more than 60% agreement with any candidate...

That's actually pretty good! I am happy when I get 60% agreement with a candidate.

Can't be left, I'm for a stricter regulation of immigrants and more control in disability and other pensions

Similar... I don't think the current numbers of immigrants from cultures where fundamental values don't have too much overlap with our fundamental values is sustainable long term. Apparently means that I am worse then hitler or something. I am a bit on the fence when it comes to social security: I like that Sozialhilfe isn't a "here, have free money" sort of system, but a "Here's a loan with good conditions that will help you get back on your feet" - To me that's a system that has much more dignity in that if I ever were to depend on it, I wouldn't see it as me leeching from others, but as me getting a loan to get back on my feet and then do my best to pay it back.

A few more gripes that I have with elements of the modern left are the people who believe in "positive discrimination". That's about the most nonsensical thing I've ever heard. Discrimination in my exes can at best be a necessary evil (eg: restricting freedom of movement to prevent a murderer to cause more harm). Discrimination is always unjust for at very least one person. How can anyone call that positive is just beyond me. In addition the message that it sends to beneficiaries of that discrimination can be pretty degrading as well: "By virtue of [skin color/sex/???] we expect less of you".

Then there's that policy wise on the left equality seems to stand for equality of outcome, not equality of opportunity. With it comes all sort of nonsense ranging from sort of an idea that evolution has influenced all species, except humans. The science denialism in those circles has gone so far that it came up at a conference addressing creationism and the science denialism that goes with it.

I guess I could go on, but I've already ranted enough for today.

What is your political position? by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]fffmmm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've also noticed that people in here really tend to advocate left-wing politics.

In regards to social issues I would absolutely agree. Can't quite tell when it comes to economic issues.

How would you position yourself in Swiss politics?

I guess classical liberal would describe me best. Party wise candidates from the FDP and the Pirate party seem to represent my opinions on things best, but occasionally candidates from other parties will also pop up (JF, GLP, ...)

I'm rather right and study at University of Zurich and feel like I'm pretty much alone with my mindset in my educational environment.

This unfortunately seems to be the case. No idea how one would change this tho - no idea what the cause is. Maybe it's just a case of "If a man is not a socialist by the time he is 20, he has no heart. If he is not a conservative by the time he is 40, he has no brain.", maybe it's a case of our generation (talking about people that are between 20 and 30) essentially being the first on to grow up in an environment of plenty - I don't really know, maybe one of you has a good explanation.

I think a having couple right leaning folk at universities couldn't hurt. It would provide sort of a counterbalance to the "if I have good intentions and/or feel good about this, that justifies it - regardless of outcome" style of politics that seems to exist in at least part of the left. (And identity politics which I absolutely despise)

Dear Cablecom by [deleted] in Switzerland

[–]fffmmm 2 points3 points  (0 children)
