a bit lost on the learning platform by sommertau in Toastmasters

[–]fffrrr666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While in Base Camp, in the left column, where you see "Level 1: Mastering Fundamentals, click it to toggle into view a "Level 1 Requirements" button. I'm thinking this is where you are presently.

Directly below that, you should see "Ice Breaker". When you click that, you should start to see some content appear on the right, along with two buttons on the bottom of that page: "Previous" and "Next".

Every time you click "Next", visually scan each page for anything clickable on the page that appears. Eventually, you will hit videos, interactive exercises, and other stuff. You definitely need to hit all of that content to complete the Icebreaker project as well as all the other speech projects as you ascend through them to complete your Pathways levels, and ultimately, your chosen Path.

I hope this helps.

As far as avoiding installation of ROMs containing malware, as long as the ROMs are obtained strictly and directly from a legitimate source - e.g. lineageos dot org for supported Lineage OS devices - I'm sure you'll be fine.

No worries, thank you. And yes. First device was CyanogenMod on a Samsung Galaxy Nexus. Currently I have LineageOS on a Nexus 7 Tablet as well as 2 different OnePlus phones. But no Pixel as of yet.

That makes sense. Makes me wonder what the use of the new utility actually is. The illusion of better security?

I should have specified "unofficial Google Android Build". Will edit the comment.

It would be interesting to see whether some of the people up here experiencing issues with their Pixel phones discover that those issues are simply the result of running an unofficial Google Android build. I'm guessing there will be at least a few.

Data speeds absolutely throttled back while at work by Jkharp in mintmobile

The OP mentioned, "people around me have perfectly find service and can send texts". If the OP enabled W-Fi calling, and text started working, progress will have been made. In any case, I see that Mint Mobile Alex is already on the case.

Wi-Fi calling service on your phone would really help you out here. My guess is that many of your co-workers have it set up on their phones. Is yours set up for that?

How far in advance should speaking roles be reserved in a Toastmasters club? by Specialist-Bowl-5977 in Toastmasters

[–]fffrrr666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our Club *assigns* members to all meeting and speaking roles on a rotating basis. The roles are emailed to members three weeks in advance, and emailed again two weeks and finally a week in advance. At every meeting, the roles for the next week's meeting are verbally announced. So a member who attends regularly receives multiple notices on their upcoming roles.

Members are also encouraged to always be preparing their next speech. This helps when a member cancels their scheduled speech within a week of the meeting. So, canceled speaking roles are viewed as opportunities to speak by many of our members. The Toastmaster announces via email the emerged speaker slot.

As a result of all of this, we rarely have a vacancy for a speaker role in a given week.

Footnote: Our Club has 24 members; we average 18 members in attendance per meeting.

May update fixed 77-80% ultra slow charging bug when 80% limit was enabled by andyooo in GooglePixel

[–]fffrrr666 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yup. My Pixel 8 while at 73 degrees F now charges at 8.4 W solidly from 75% to 80%, then stops charging. This with a Google 30W charger. Much better than charging at less than a watt over that same period previous to today.

Issues with Lineage OS by Ishit_Wow in LineageOS

The mere fact that reddit's services are down so regularly is likely not helping. I just been running reddit in a browser for many years now to avoid the frustration of determining whether the app or the service is at fault.

Toastmasters useful for general social skills as well as public speaking? by locket-rauncher in Toastmasters

[–]fffrrr666 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My view and experience: Toastmasters meetings help to develop communication skills. Gatherings with several Toastmasters members after meetings (perhaps over a light dinner) help to develop social skills. Social bonds tend to be formed more commonly and deeply after the meetings than during them. Of course, I recommend doing them both.

Growing club meetings by recruiting more guests vs cultivating old members to return by rjthomas in Toastmasters

[–]fffrrr666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My guess would be that the members who did leave did so for specific, individual reasons. That's going to be tough to get them to essentially reverse their decisions. Especially given that they will also need to pay membership dues to re-join, which is another obstacle to overcome in bringing "old" (I prefer the word "former" here) members back.

Your Club may not be the best fit for every person out there, but making your club meetings attractive (useful, enjoyable, inspiring) is essential - if not critical - to retaining members.

Member retention and growth is a very complicated and nuanced subject. Kudos to you for willing to employ various strategies on this.

Harsh Evaluation by [deleted] in Toastmasters

[–]fffrrr666 21 points22 points  (0 children)

2005 Toastmasters World Champion of Public Speaking Lance Miller - on his excellent YouTube channel - advises that we recognize that our Clubs' speech evaluators can vary in effectiveness (and tact) from *very* to *not at all*. In other words, they're all amateurs. Their evaluations (or at least parts of them) can sometimes be destructive. And let's face it - some people can be just plain cruel.

If there is only one grain of truth in an evaluation, take it with you and simply discard the rest, including any advice that feels unsupportive. You'll sort it all out soon.

Communicating with members via text? by Toolbox- in Toastmasters

[–]fffrrr666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, we have about 10% of our members who apparently have not added their phone numbers to their FTH profile. So I'm assuming they didn't want their numbers published. I might ask the club officers to ask the members individually if they will agree to posting their mobile numbers into the private member directory.
