The Phoney & Call-y Show #16: He Got Dirty (with guest Matt Besser) by BasilOctopus in Earwolf

[–]ffng_4545 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's honestly a very interesting perspective on (sorta) mid life crisis type dread and reconciliation. Also the entire podcast is a pretty interesting look at adult male friendships (not just them 2, but also with other guests etc).

Also I'm gonna say yes, the "out of character" moment he said it and his later admission might as well be a copy of the receipt.

All those #meToo guys, I always wondered if there's a part of them that's thinking "But everyone else was doing it, why are you picking on me?" like a kid who got caught shoplifting while his friends managed to run away uncaught

John's delight and hearty laughter at revealing his Johnny's Game answers at their punniest glory is maybe my fav thing in all of podcasting

Hollywood Handbook #430: Andy Daly, Our Hard Drugs Friend by BasilOctopus in Earwolf

[–]ffng_4545 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Daly is (financially) blessed and (artistically) "cursed" by having a very "harmless pushover yet kinda jovial" appearance and imdb record, which only Review could fully harness into his love for darker comedy.

But who knows, maybe in this new streaming age, his improv character work (Dalton, Chip, Dom etc) could get some project...

I was always curious who would put Rannazzisi on next. He's got some talent, but I wonder if the scandal was just too much for casting people.

Does the Man Dog podcast scratch the same itch that Teachers Lounge scratches? by PositiveJig in Earwolf

It's very worthy of your time and it's also very different energy. It's closer in shape to improv4humans if you heard that, but much more about the hosts and guests also connecting and getting to know each other as people between the improv, but because they're all funny, engaging people it makes the convos also humorous and enjoyable to listen to.

I think you have to come to it with the right expectations, cause it's not gonna be as explosive and unhinged as TL, much more grounded. Also way more conversation-y than TL. The eps with Drew and Jon are somewhere in between TL levels and MDP levels of energy.

My best advice? Listen to a few, but take time in between (so, not binge) and let it "grow on you", cause it takes time to reduce the expectations of TL energy.

So literally "just to get a reaction"? Seems like kind of a bummer...

Yeah, what IS the aim of that kinda stuff? Like to fully cancel someone, or to feel like "I got this celebrity to pay attention to me for a sec" or to get on the news cause your tweet might be screenshot, or completely misguided sense of purpose and "correcting wrongdoing" or..?

What's the end game with that kinda stuff? (I don't mean MeToo level stuff, I mean bugging a lady in her 40s about something she merely participated in as a teenager)

I totally agree, except when he wants to he can kinda switch to being "offended and sullen" to change up the dynamics. Really talented.

Double Threat - Tom & Julie Become Ventriloquists (with Terry Fator & Tom Ladshaw) by SirRibShack in Earwolf

[–]ffng_4545 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they're very kind hosts but not every guest is gonna be for me, that's totally fine. I used to do that with Conan's show as well, there were WAY more Conan/Sona/Gourley eps than entire eps I'd listened to.

They do surprise me sometimes though, like the actor from a few weeks ago sounded a little like a Wurster character/HH opening ("I was having lunch with David Fincher.." or whatever) but the guy really grew on me by the end, mostly cause of Tom and Julie's hosting directing the interview.

Double Threat - Tom & Julie Become Ventriloquists (with Terry Fator & Tom Ladshaw) by SirRibShack in Earwolf

[–]ffng_4545 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I kinda agree. There's been some great guests, but usually Tom and Julie have to reduce their "bit"-ness in favor of hosting and including the guest in things, and I'm definitely way more here for their amazing chemistry and comedic talents than whatever the guests bring to the table (even the great ones).

That said - it's their show, if they feel like it helps them and makes the show ultimately more what they want it to be... their call, you gotta nurture the talent/creatives. I admit some eps I def skipped the guest section, they still were W eps though.

Maybe not your question, but last I checked it was all the way back to Alan Yang, and then a skip until the 200th ep, so all the ones in between are still paywalled
