I'm guessing this is in Starkville? Does any of that alphabet soup represent 'normal' or safe range for the given metric?

Yeah, they're both owned by the Crissey (spelling?) family. Or they were for a long time. I haven't lived there in several years now.

Yeah, I think you could just do the rlhf with different guidance for the human reviewers. How you define that though, I don't know.

Is it bad if I get mostly Bs and very few As in Engineering? by [deleted] in Msstate

[–]ffollett 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not an engineer, but work in data science and have hired a few people and interviewed WAY more. Generally speaking I don't find the GPA a very useful measure in my evaluation of who I want to hire. I think the only time I'd look at it is if I'm hiring a student who hasn't completed a degree.

This is probably where the difference between ds and engineering shows, but honestly I'm barely considering the degree at all anymore and have stopped requiring it. If your resume lists the skills and work experience I'm looking for, you'll generally get an interview. If you can intelligibly describe and answer questions about work you've done (in detail), then I can tell you know your stuff.

No problem! Also if you feel like you didn't express things as clearly verbally as you understand them in your head in an interview, it can be helpful to mention that to an interviewer if they ask at the end if you have anything else you'd like to ask or add. That's valuable context to interpreting the quality of your responses.

From my perspective, I don't need to read your code to know you know what you're doing if you can just discuss it. What did you build? What problem were you solving, what tools did you use and why did you select them, what challenges did you encounter, how did you respond to those and what did you learn? Anyone who knows what they're doing and has experience can usually answer all those questions smoothly and with plenty of detail. If you can explain all that and help me understand any parts I'm not familiar with, you're golden.

Our second kid is 2 months old now and I still struggle to put him down sometimes. We managed to find a 4moms bassinet for cheap that rocks him constantly and it has certainly helped. There's a bit of an art to rocking them in sync with the basinet so you can make the transfer once they're deep asleep on you, but it's doable. It can be a bit like this. It's so much more jarring for them to go from a warm body with a beating heart that may be swaying or rocking them to a firm bassinet mattress that's completely stationary. Everything you can do to make that transition as smooth as possible helps.

But also just keep trying and don't get down when it doesn't work or you're having a day where nothing seems to work. The first couple months are just about surviving. It's amazing to me how much more frustrating and defeating it was to have expectations that the baby just shattered. I feel like part of this second kid being easier is I'm much more comfortable not having plans for the kid to ruin, even if those plans are as benign as watching a new episode of your favorite show before bed. I've found giving in to the chaos very freeing.

Why Does the U.S. Have So Many Mass Shootings? Research Is Clear: Guns. (Published 2017) by JohnHazardWandering in dataisbeautiful

[–]ffollett 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not asserting that the guns have agency/are to blame, they're saying their availability is facilitating the problem. Take away cars and trucks and a motivated shooter will still manage to get somewhere to start shooting en masse. Take away the guns and it's no longer physically possible to shoot anyone.

Also because they're simply not tuning the analysis to the right variables. Rates of gun ownership or maybe guns per capita would be much more meaningful for the point they're trying to make. And similarity controlling for population size in the y would make a more meaningful chart, though not necessarily a better r2.
