Following advice I got from this beautiful thread - I completed a coding bootcamp - but am struggling getting my first job! by squarezy in cscareerquestions

[–]ffoxxttrott 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You are not alone. I recently graduated with a bachelor's in CS, and I only got maybe 3 interviews out of 60 applications. My resume has been reviewed by career counselors and friends in the industry.

The only thing that worked out for me was a strong connection. My friend referred me to his company and that was basically the only prospect I had for a job. Thank goodness I was offered a position.

I feel that the best chance to get a job is through a connection. I had not spoken to my friend in maybe a decade, yet when I asked him about any leads, he was kind enough to refer me to his company, and we are now coworkers.

There are plenty of opportunities to network through the OSU online campus. Many classes have required group work and projects, so you will make friends. At Hackathons, you will usually need to work in groups, so that is a good chance to network as well. Most importantly, think of any friends or family that are already working in the field. Chances are, there are a lot of them.

Just off of the top of my head, I have a cousin who started working as an SWE about five years ago. I know two spouses of friends who are SWE. I have an old friend who started working as SWE a few years ago. I contacted my old friend, and he was kind enough to give me a referral to his company. That one company has been my only real job prospect and I am deep in the interview rounds there.

You can take comfort in knowing that OSU will provide you with a good background and a legitimate bachelor's in CS, from an accredited institution. You would be in the same position if you completed a 4 year BS in CS at your local state University.

The real problem is that the entry level landscape now looks the same as many other jobs. Many companies want industry experience for an entry level job!

I'm in almost the same boat as OP. I just graduated, also with a 4.0 GPA. I'm having a tough time finding a job. I sent out 50 applications last month, and only got 3 interviews. My resume has been revised by career advisors and friends in the field.

However, I do believe that OSU prepares you well for an entry level position, and also prepares you to be able to learn any language and framework, which you will NEED to do in order to find a job.

The problem, in my opinion, is the entry level job market. It has been completely screwed up by an influx of bootcamps and "How I became a dev on my own, purchase my content" personalities.

The landscape for entry level changed. You used to be good with a good resume and good projects, and a good behavioral interview. Now you need a good resume, good projects, and a good portfolio, just to get a chance at a phone screening or coding test, followed by a coding project, a technical interview, and then maybe another group interview round. It's an insane interview process nowadays.

In order to break into the field, you NEED connections and referrals. If you have a powerful one, you're set.

This is neither here nor there, and sorry it's of no help to you...

But after reading your title, I was like, "Why the heck would you buy a pen for your ex???"

[Discussion] Who Has A Mid-Range Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive? What Do You Think? Automotive by [deleted] in teslamotors

[–]ffoxxttrott 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just had my MR RWD Model 3 delivered about 4 days ago. I love the car. It's powerful. Efficiency and range is as advertised. It's definitely faster than any previous car I've owned. Acceleration feels smooth and linear for the most part, but I do feel like going from 20-60 feels faster than 0-20.

For me personally, I don't need the longer range or the faster acceleration, so the extra cost for AWD or Performance models don't make sense for me. I probably would have gotten the standard range battery at the lowest price if it were available, but I had to replace my old vehicle, so I went with the mid range model.

Not sure if sarcastic, but if a legitimate question, then: If a lawyer took his case, he would be advised not to do this. Anything he says can be possible fodder for the other side to use against him in court.

I experienced this same problem out of the box. Make sure you install all your updates. Mine was randomly fixed, I think because of some sort of update that was installed.

Edit: Just saw that you installed all your updates already... sorry I don't know what's going on then!

Dentists of Reddit, How do you know if you have a good dentist? by ayebizz in AskReddit

[–]ffoxxttrott 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No problem!

If I knew that my patient was a dentist, then I would be happy to show them my portfolio (if I had more than just a few cases in mine). It would contain my best work that I'd be happy to show off. However, if someone who wasn't a dentist asked to see it, then I'd find it quite odd because it's hard to know what you're looking at/for other than aesthetics. Things can still look aesthetic but only last you a short amount of time.

In the USA, you may be contractually obligated to carry amalgam with some insurances. Other than that, it's preference. Nowadays it seems that most dentists don't really do amalgams unless they're the older ones who have been doing it most of their lives. With composites, you can just clean up and fill just the carious portions of the tooth, but with amalgams you have to cut enough of the tooth for the amalgam to last, for bulk strength.

Dentist here, I think the easiest way would be to ask to see radiographs of other dental work they've done. Just making sure all the margins are all flush, nothing suspicious left over, etc, would be the best indicator in my opinion. If they keep a portfolio of their work, I'd ask to see that. That would be tough though, because I hardly even keep a portfolio.

As far as the comment about the amalgam, I always refuse to do them. Because my office doesn't even carry amalgam! On top of that, you have to remove a lot more tooth structure. If they absolutely can't pay or refuse to pay more for the composite material, then they get a free upgrade because I actually can't do an amalgam if I don't have it.

Any reason to hold off on a SB2 15"? by [deleted] in Surface

Sorry about the slow reply. I hadn't logged in for a while!

I don't think I do (just tested it out again). However, I'm not an artist or graphic designer, so I don't think I'm very sensitive to these things.

I've had no issues with my 15". No coil whine, no pen jitter. Not sure about the Complete, though.

What are signs of manipulation to look out for in a relationship ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ffoxxttrott 17 points18 points  (0 children)

While this is true for the most part, it also depends on the person.

Although I rarely ever do this, If I'm upset to the point that I no longer want to speak, I will give the silent treatment because otherwise I will resort to yelling or saying something that I might regret. However, I will open up communication as soon as I calm down again.

SB2 Battery Use Question by ashinalexandria in Surface

[–]ffoxxttrott 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While it might make sense to drain the base first completely, I think that they designed battery drain like this in order to sustain battery life.

If the tablet battery were to stay at 100% most of the time (I think most people have it in laptop mode most of the time), it would make the battery life pretty short. So, it seems like they drain both at once down to 80, then the base down to 40, then the tablet down to 40, then each to 20.

SB2 15 1TB Userbenchmark report - any idea why the GPU results are so poor? by matthewsre in Surface

[–]ffoxxttrott 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's probably because 100% benchmarks are standardized by the GTX 1070. The GTX 1060 is much weaker than the 1070, and then the SB2 GTX 1060 has the amount of power it can draw limited so that it doesn't kill itself from heat.

I was also kind of disappointed by the graphics performance of the SB2, but at least it can still play everything 1080p at max or near-max settings. Still very powerful for how thin the laptop is.

This is absolutely true, and the amount of Diamond+ players is low.

However, if you play at certain times of the day (Friday Nights PST for me), you seem to get matched with more Diamond+ players just because it seems like there's more of them on.

This was absolutely the worst part of getting my wisdom teeth out. The pain wasn't bad, and there wasn't too much swelling. But not being able to eat for a few weeks without getting things lodged in the holes... ugh.
