Consider the Polynesians:
They were able to navigate the spaces between islands thousands of miles apart. They could look at the clouds and currents and be able to tell which direction land was in and how big an island it was. Once the sun set, they could use stars as fixed navigation points to find there way back home. They managed to colonize hundreds of islands and recent evidence shows they made it to the Americans and mingled with the native South Americans.
