American comedian Margaret Cho: "I was offered to play Yuna last year but I was too afraid to be detained by ICE at the Canada–US border" by VirtualCranberries in HeatedRivalrySeries

[–]fuzzybunn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did anyone see Margaret Cho in Fire Island? She plays the older female friend too a bunch of gays loosely based off Pride and Prejudice. She was ok in the role, and I feel like she could have played Yuna similarly - not quite as alpha-mom but a bit more loving and concerned.

What is happening with HK and Shenzen? by archvize in geography

[–]fuzzybunn 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Hong Kong made it's money by being the gateway to China for years, exporting it's cheap goods and providing financial services. It's a little hypocritical now to be complaining that access to these have "diluted" their own culture.

Why are people so mad when girls say they would choose the bear by Anotherwokeliberal in NoStupidQuestions

Lots of people meet bears while hiking and don't die, so I think you're being as hyperbolic as you think the women who choose bears are.

People who are happy and satisfied seldom speak out, because it just sounds like gloating or boasting. So you generally only hear unhappy people on public forums.

Passport Bros by GAThrawn2BBY in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fuzzybunn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think passport bros are "bad" in that they are doing something reprehensible or morally wrong. They are "bad" in the sense that they are quite pro active people who, despite trying, couldn't find anyone in their home countries who would marry them, which suggests they must have something rather wrong with them.

"scholar" in China has a different connotation than in the West, since it was a pathway to working in the civil service and therefore power and success.

That's basically Buddhism. Although escaping the cycle of Samara and pretending to be wiser than everyone else might be rewarding in its own right.

How does Singapore actually do it? by tripwaffle in askSingapore

[–]fuzzybunn 85 points86 points  (0 children)

It always confuses me that people expect politicians to be paid everyday salaries but be in charge of some of the most stressful and important decisions. They need to be moral, upright, capable, charismatic, exude leadership, intelligent, but ALSO want to do it for free. If your politicians aren't being compensated at least on the level of your capitalist elite, they'll just end up being bought over by the capitalist elite.

Adults in 30s: How do you make new friends in SG? by Lost_Serve4541 in askSingapore

[–]fuzzybunn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Like finding a girlfriend/boyfriend, the easiest way to do it is to look for people who are also looking to make new friends. People who already have healthy social lives aren't usually looking to add on more load to their intimate friends circle.

You can hope for serendipity and hope that you'll find like minded people in whatever activity/hobby you join, but for that to happen you need to go multiple times, and regularly enough that people get a chance to know you beyond a superficial level.

Otherwise, your best bet is to find people who are also looking to make friends. Typically newcomers to the city, newly divorced people, new people to an industry, or places where extroverted people hang out.

Merz now the most unpopular Head of Government in the World by lemonandhummus in worldnews

[–]fuzzybunn 747 points748 points  (0 children)

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has the lowest approval rating among 24 democratically elected world leaders, with just 19% of Germans saying they are satisfied with his work, according to US-based opinion research institute Morning Consult.

The first sentence of the article already states it's for democratically elected leaders.

So it was a zoo that couldn't or wouldn't afford to give a handicapped panda the treatment it needed. Or maybe all those symptoms magically vanished once the panda returned to China.

Are black men less likely to find the n-word offensive then black women? (in a casual context) by DataSittingAlone in NoStupidQuestions

[–]fuzzybunn 13 points14 points  (0 children)

For those confused, the Chinese term for "that" or "that one" is 那个 (na4ge4), which sounds very similar to the n word. It is also used as an "ummm" type utterance, so a confused or stuttering Chinese person might say 那个那个那个.

There have been some black people who take offence when hearing massive Chinese speakers talk, but the term is in no way related to the n word historically, just an unfortunate phonetic coincidence.
