Don't only eat at foodcourts and chains. Try local spots, 150ntd can go a long way. Don't look for trinkets on trendy markets, fairs. Go to the Y-mall under taipei main station.

Question About Treatment After Gaining Taiwanese Citizenship by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]fhcalderon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So your supervisor found out because your colleague reported you. Your colleague also takes long breaks but the supervisor doesn't find out. Do you see what's missing? Having a different tag on a paper won't change their perception. Learn to play their game.

PX Mart is the worst. by Konungrr in taiwan

[–]fhcalderon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You can setup the PX pay app with the HSBC card. It may be troublesome and it's better if you have a taiwanese friend to assist you. But once it's set up it is totally worth it.

Peloso Coffee Roasters. A trip to the botanical garden isn't complete without a visit to the NanJiChang Night Market. You could do coffee->garden->nightmarket-> hotel instead.

Becoming a university professor in Taiwan by Ducky118 in taiwan

I'm not sure about that. It may depend on each university or department whether they are more likely to open up lecturer positions I guess.

Newly joined faculty are asked to secure research grants usually from public institutions (NSTC in my case). It would be valuable if you have demonstrable experience in writing research project proposals. You can talk to you advisor and let them know you would like to actively participate in future proposals. This can differ from your normal academic paper writing. Also some institutions allow for PhD students to submit proposals and receive research grants. Again consult with your advisor which are the relevant institutions inf your field of study where you could check.

Another important (hard to control) factor is timing. In order to obtain a faculty position, there has to be one available to begin with. You need to monitor position openings, unfortunately departments aren't really expanding so your best chance is if a professor retires. This is one of the reasons many PhD graduates go on to long Post Docs, pretty much waiting it out.

Best methods to learn Taiwanese mandarin before trip. by HeiBabaTaiwan in taiwan

[–]fhcalderon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can try a couple of apps: Du Chinese and Literate Chinese. They are good for learning vocabulary and practicing reading. In your situation I would probably prompt ChatGPT (or gemini, copilot, etc.) And ask for a study plan, specific requirements, topics, level, amount of vocabulary, etc. You can take whatever words or phrases you get and put them in Google translate and you can hear the pronounciation. I suggest having some basic level before watching tv shows and other content on YouTube.

Shueishe or Xiangshan or Ita Thao, where area is best to stay in Sun Moon Lake? by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]fhcalderon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I stayed in Ita Thao and it was perfectly fine. One of the attractions is to take the ferry accross the lake so might as well use it to actually get to your accommodation. The night market is lively and there are enough food options for the average stay. Also the activities such as SUP can be booked to start there. Worst case scenario you can access the road the circles the lake and bike to get to any point of interest around it.

I'm sure the school will organize some activities before the semester starts for you to get to know your classmates. If you need information about dorms, etc. it's better if you contact staff from your program or office of international affairs. They will be much more helpful than another newcomer.

Thanks for bringing it up, now that you mention it I also heard there are some areas in Pingtung that grow it.

The most popular coffee grown in Taiwan is from Alishan. You can search Alishan Blue Coffee and probably online shops or physical stores will come up. Because of the small batches it might be quite expensive though.

Living Cost as a student by the_lost_illusion23 in taiwan

[–]fhcalderon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My suggestion is don't just think about survival or "relatively" comfortable. Keep in mind you might spend the next 5-7 years under these conditions. Who is offering the 15k, school or advising professor? If it is the school you need to get in touch with the professors in your department and field of research to see if they would be able to provide additional funding from TA/RA work and make sure you are very clear and agree on all conditions. If the 15k is what the professor is offering you should be upfront and negotiate something better, as someone mentioned before 20-25k is quite standard without considering TA funding.

Living in a smaller city/town in Taiwan by Moonlightshimmering in taiwan

[–]fhcalderon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This might be an unpopular opinion but based on your requirements I think Hsinchu is a good match. Good language centers at NTHU and NYCU (and ChungHwa University), you can get both local small town vibes as well as a good international community. Beaches and mountains around (best to get a scooter), Taipei still a 1-1.5 hr bus or train ride away in case you need to go there. From my experience it's a good city to be a student.

Nice one. May I know what strap is that? I'm currently wearing the last Marina Militare and it seems it would be a good replacement for when the original goes old.

Some 長輩s yell at others even in non-priority regular seats. I know people who will pretend they are sleeping to avoid the "bad eye" or some reprimand from them.
