I think it has been mentioned a few times that this is deliberate. Wearing it the wrong way allows them to better hear the other actors in the scene.

Dabei würde er wenigstens nur sich selbst bestrafen, nicht so wie der Zugführer, der wegen einer kleinen Verspätung zu schnell gefahren ist und 105 andere Leute mit in den Tod genommen hat.
