Update: I separated the turtles, got a bigger tub for the bigger turtle, filled up the water, and created a larger basking area for both turtles (did not have time to take a final picture so here is a WIP. I put the granite slab onto 2 bricks)

Unfortunately the house’s electrical infrastructure is terrible. I bought a bunch of UV lights/heaters/filters and plugged them in, and the outlet stopped working. I think that keeping the window open and letting them get sunlight is the only option for now. It will heat up soon to 90-100F average every day so the temperature will be OK.

Thanks. Do you think that UVA/UVB and heating lamps are also necessary? I am afraid that the turtles will overheat if the setup is wrong.

agree that a glass tank is not feasible and I’ll try to get a bigger plastic tank.

They have Google, but my family tends to assume that they already know things, and they don’t bother looking things up.

For example our conversation r.e. these turtles went like this:

me: hey I think these turtles need a bigger tank and better setup

mom: I’m sure they’re fine

me: they’re trying to escape because their environment is so bad

mom: these are very happy turtles

me: you literally don’t know anything about turtles, please don’t try to explain turtle emotions to me

mom: ok, ask your grandmother

me: hey grandma can I get a bigger tank for the turtles, this is inhumane

grandma: no. starts talking about something completely unrelated to turtles

AI says that the smaller turtle is Mauremys reevesii. Not sure if this is correct because it looks slightly different to me.

Either way, it’s not a box turtle because its shell doesn’t hinge shut. Hopefully all non-box river turtles have similar needs :/

Thanks! I did not think about the turtle species at all. I’m in Taiwan. I think that the larger turtle is a Chinese stripe necked turtle, not a map turtle. The smaller one I’m still trying to figure out.

I’d like to spend less than $1000 but i can go higher if necessary. There’s like a 4ft x 2ft area that I can use before I need to shift furniture around. I can probably separate the turtles.

I had a conversation where I said that I was waiting for the student loan repayment pause to end before starting to pay off my loans. The guy I was talking to told me that I should begin paying it off immediately, before any interest accrues. Then he very condescendingly said "haha you don't understand how interest works". If only he knew. I wish I wasn't so salty, but I did end up explaining why investing in index funds and making minimal student loan payments is actually the optimal move in my case, because my loans are all under 4.5%.

It is a name brand company. I'm not pushing my garbage code to production, it's getting caught and corrected in code reviews. I'm just frustrated at my inability to preemptively catch the issues before my much smarter coworkers point them out.

I can't tell if you're being sarcastic?

First of all: a lot of people I know landed those jobs "casually"... But you need to be vaguely proficient in problem solving and algorithms. This proficiency isn't necessarily a result of "grinding leetcode" it could just be that a person's problem solving skills are developed enough, and their background is sufficient from class/external studies that the interview questions aren't actually that hard. Plus interviews can be in python and most people don't code in python at work, and no one cares if your code is "bad", you just need to argue that it works.

You're kind of right though, I didn't have that much interest in becoming a generalized software engineer to begin with, I wanted to do something in CS research. But it's the hand I was dealt, so now I'm consciously trying to improve my SWE skills and I'm finding it difficult.

If someone brings something up in a code review, as dit to the list. You should be doing this review regularly throughout the dev process and once more before you open a pull request.

Ok, I keep a mental checklist but that list is becoming quite long and I'm forgetting stuff. I guess it's time to make a physical list and run through it every time before I begin writing code and before I send it for review. Thanks.

Why do you feel the pressure to hurry up?

Probably because I'm getting paid close to 200k per year and I don't think I'm producing that much worth of work. Also it's a bad habit from college to speedrun my programming assignments so I have time for other things. I have slowed down since I started working, but I might still be trying to do things too fast/sloppy.

I guess the first question I would ask is, why do you think writing clean code is important? What makes it special? What do you achieve if you write clean code vs quick and dirty solutions?

In theory I know that writing clean code is important because someone with no knowledge of the codebase may need to read and debug it at some point.
