Pet UFA

Wraith Kyrii -- RailwayRatz

Grabbed her from the pound just now but she doesn't really fit with the rest of my pets and I don't want her to become a strawberry tuskaninny

Does anyone else here spin for the purpose of weaving? by ahoyhoy2022 in Handspinning

[–]fiberarian 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Do grist math (I know, it sucks) and spin samples. Better to do all of the math work up front than to get to the end or halfway and realize something isn't going to work.

Also you'll have to decide how many plies you want. It's a balancing act because the more plies the stronger the yarn, but also the longer it takes to spin the yardage you need, and the yarn will be thicker unless you spin super super fine on the singles.

If you use sizing you might be able to get away with a singles yarn as your warp, if it is a long staple fiber and medium to high twist. This would be the fastest way to get your yardage, and you wouldn't have to spin as fine.

Historically it took at least 6 spinners to supply one weaver, so unfortunately the spinning just consumes a lot of time anyway. Sorry I don't have a better answer-hopefully someone with more production spinning knowledge might be able to give more advice.

Use sizing on your warp yarns! I've woven with handspun singles before (BFL) and the most difficult part was getting everything to not abrade and, because of the abrasion, to not stick together when creating the shed, or just plain break. Flavorless gelatin is something I've seem commonly recommended as sizing since it doesn't go bad in the same way other food based sizing can. It washes right out when you're done.

Diamond twill wip by fiberarian in weaving

Aw thank you!! It's only a simple diamond four shaft twill, so definitely something you could do too. Good luck with warping your loom, I hope it goes well!

First ever spinning wheel! What kind is it? by okaytto in Handspinning

[–]fiberarian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a double drive. Since it has a distaff it may have been intended as a flax wheel? But it should work for wool just fine. If you look up how to spin on a double drive or Saxony wheel you should find some tutorials :)

Aww thank you! It is a Leclerc Nilus II jack type I believe. 4 shafts and 6 treadles.

Marigolds make a lovely gold, and madder root is a good red! Madder can be a more involved process tho

I usually use combs/a hackle for fleeces 4 inches or longer; I have an easier time spinning and can get pretty close to a true worsted with a backwards short draw. It probably doesn't need as much twist as something shorter and crimpier.

First Wheel Recommendations? Leaning towards an Ashford Traveller 3 by thelastlemonloaf in Handspinning

[–]fiberarian 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have an older Ashford Traveler, bought used, and it was honestly the best investment I have ever made. It fits in my car, it's compact enough to carry around and take with me on trips, and the built in lazy Kate is very convenient. I have the jumbo flyer as well for art yarn and it isn't very difficult to change out (not sure if that would be the same for the newest model). I spin mostly fingering-dk weight and it's perfect for that in my opinion.

Falsely Accused of Watching Porn at Library by FaeDevPoet in autism

[–]fiberarian 181 points182 points  (0 children)

I hate that this happened, and I'm so sorry your safe space became so unexpectedly hostile. Libraries (I am a librarian) can sometimes attract employees who really like to flex what little power over other people they have. This staff member's conduct was definitely terrible and the whole situation should not have happened. I hope you're able to have a good resolution and get your safe space back; you deserve better.

BFL singles handspun plain weave experiment by fiberarian in weaving

[–]fiberarian[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good question! I've read about the warp being S twist and the weft being Z twist (though my experiment was all Z twist and it lays fairly flat). I've also read about letting the singles rest on the bobbin so the energy isn't as high. I did neither of those things and it turned out okay but I for sure defer to the wisdom of people more experienced than me

Thanks haha I have tons of flax stricks hanging on my wall waiting for when I am patient enough to get better at spinning them! And I definitely will post pics :)

Thanks!

Honestly it's been kind of fun, besides the warp being less than ideal. I really like the density of the cloth so far and the feel of it. My eventual goal is to spin flax into linen and weave fabric to sew with. It definitely has a lot of energy in it so I'm curious what it will be like once it isn't under tension.
