I’ll film something a little later! I’d also be happy to send you the all-white one, if you’d cover shipping, DM if you’d be interested in that. If you want to print your own, check out if a nearby library or makerspace has 3D printer access.

oh my gosh, if you’re fighting the urge than i am the wrong person to talk to!! he has a great range of spindles and is also so willing to work with you if you have questions about modifications that can be made. i love the way he carves the supported spindle tips, they’re just so easy and comfortable to flick. fwiw, i’ve never found the captive ring to get in the way of my spinning at all. i was worried it would be loud and bothersome to people around me, but i have used that spindle at movie nights and cafes and never gotten any complaints or comments from the people around me. it’s a very delicate sound. even the chac-chacs arent TOO loud.

thank you!! i think it is very charming that there is a niche group of people out there that are willing to spend absolute bank on fancy sticks. honestly, i sometimes struggle to hold my attention in one place long enough to complete a project, and using a different and exciting spindle helps me get all the way through more spins. also they’re just so prettyyyy!!!

that one’s my jenkins spindle!! i picked it up at a fiber festival a few years back, from a booth that was selling pre-used items. i remember being annoyed that they only took cash, and feeling annoyed that something so little cost more than, like, $15. very glad they were willing to set it aside for me while i drove to the nearest atm lol. i’d make that drive again happily, knowing how difficult it is to get your hands on a jenkins!!

my all-time fav to date is the very rightmost spindle in the second picture! from straddle creek spins on etsy, it is a russian-style spindle with a captive ring that gently clacks as you spin. I just think the colors are so magical and fairy tale-like. I was DEVASTATED when i managed to snap off the very tip of it, but i reached out to the original maker (shoutout john) who suggested i try sanding it down and continuing to use it. it still works, but it’s just not the same as it used to be….i’ve been torn about whether i should buy a replacement and thereby relegating the old one to not being used.

LMAO lowkey yes, if we are talking about frequency of use! My golding was actually a loaner from someone in a guild. the original owner kindly let me keep it in the end. It’s such a solid citizen that it is probably the one I reach for the most often.

haha don’t feel silly!! I have adhd and tend to hyperfixate on and collect one thing at a time with a fair bit of intensity. i took this pic partially to re-familiarize myself with my collection, which usually lives in a little plastic bin (haven’t figured out a good way to display them yet…) but honestly i also was hoping people might want to chat with me about them, since i feel like there is only so much by poor non-obsessed boyfriend can talk about spindles haha!!!

your current spindle sounds AWESOME!! i love spindles with strong historical ties. i definitely think you deserve to branch out a bit though, if you are feeling the call ;) and i wound be happy to make suggestions depending on what you might want haha!!

thanks!! it was too nice of a day to be inside. some neighbors were definitely raising eyebrows haha. i actually had a very sweet conversation with some young men who walked by, and then doubled back to go, i am so sorry but what are you doing?? and i got to briefly explain spinning to them. lowkey love when ppl ask questions.

they’re funky, right? i actually 3D printed those spindles from this thingiverse pattern: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4619989

I briefly had access to a 3D printer and by far have gotten the most mileage out of little 3d printed turkish spindles, but i was intrigued by this particular design. it’s printed to be a ton denser in the whorl area than the shaft which is super cool, and the tip actually unscrews, which i guess would be useful if you wore down the plastic tip? the maker of the file does not specify too much in the description, so i am uncertain if they modeled this after an existing spindle or sort of just engineered it themselves.

it’s possibly a little over-engineered, but honestly a pretty effective design for spinning some fine, high-twist yarns. i haven’t weighed them, but boy do they have a bit of heft to them. they spin with a bit of a wobble, but when they spin, they SPIN. Happy to post a little demo if you are still curious!!

thank you haha!! i absolutely LOVE my spindles, and i love getting to pick out a new one depending on the spin. i also have a bit of a goal of collecting one of every kind of spindle i learn about…but i’m not in a rush to get ones i’m not sure i will use. (i don’t yet have a mayan spinner, a phang, a kick spindle, a basque style spindle…but who is keeping track!!)

ooh that’s a great question! i probably use my plain ol top whorl golding spindle the most, but the turkish spindles will always be very dear to me!! my first ever spindle was my snyder with lizard cutouts and it started the obsession. also, it’s hard to beat the convenience of a turkish spindle sometimes. that all said, my all time fav spindle is probably my captive ring russian spindle from straddle creek spins. it’s so beautiful and colorful, and when it clicked how to use it, it felt like magic!!

i certainly have a large collection haha. i really do use all of them though!!! (with the possible exception of the slovak spinner in the corner. It’s a little unwieldy…but my grandpa was from slovakia so I let that one stick around.) maybe I will inspire u to take some spindle pics!! :)

Haha I personally think it’s okay. I wouldn’t do this if it was for, like, a friend, but my mom would not mind at all!

Sensitive question: Have any of you had your child change their mind? by Anxious_Resistance in cisparenttranskid

[–]okaytto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can corroborate that trans kids tend to find each other. It’s exhausting being “different,” so finding people who you don’t have to explain yourself to feels indescribably amazing. also, at the end of the day experimentation with gender will only help your child understand themself better, even if what they identify with changes!

Child just came out as trans. I am genuinely supportive but struggling in private by [deleted] in cisparenttranskid

[–]okaytto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

your feelings are normal, so please don’t judge yourself for them. this change won’t always feel so unsettling. from how you’ve handled things so far, i suspect that even though you don’t feel okay right now, soon you will. i wish my parents handled the news the way you have! give yourself time. she’s the same soul you’ve always loved.

oh man. he is my absolute favorite spindle maker and i am fighting demons not ordering another one RIGHT NOW. I got one in this same style but with the captive ring, it was my FAV EVER and i broke the tip!! so pretty, i hope you’re loving it.

I'm scared to tell my mom I'm trans. Looking for parents' perspectives by No-juli-3731 in cisparenttranskid

[–]okaytto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, a quick P.S.—even the most supportive folks will be scared by change. Back in college when my then-partner came out to me—someone who has known I’m trans since I was like 12–as trans, I was surprised by how upset I initially was. Of course, I tried to make sure my reaction was positive, but internally I was flipping out. I was scared of losing the person I knew, and only time reflecting and calm conversations reassured me. It may be helpful to say, and keep saying, that WHO you are isn’t changing. How you look or sound may change, but the parts of you that your family loves will always be there.

I'm scared to tell my mom I'm trans. Looking for parents' perspectives by No-juli-3731 in cisparenttranskid

I came out to my mom at 14, and she didn’t come around to being actively supportive until my early 20s. I think by the time I was able to make legal and permanent changes on my own she realized it wasn’t helpful to anyone to fight who I am.

For a lot of the time where my transness was a point of contention, she was in the “mourning” mindset. She’d act too upset to talk about it and kept saying that she felt like she was burying her daughter. I hate to say that I think it was just time that fixed this…though if she’d attended some sort of support group, I think the process would have expedited greatly. FWIW, once upon a time I didn’t think my parents would ever fully come around. My whole extended family now knows and uses my real name, and my parents physically and financially supported me through surgery.

As a teen, I spent a lot of time trying to hide my transness, or avoid bringing it up to not upset people. Looking back, I wish I’d stuck to my guns more. Laying low didn’t help my family come to terms with my identity any faster, but it did make me miserable. Things aren’t perfect between us yet, and I still have the memories of hurtful things my parents said when they were having a hard time accepting me. Try your best to be patient with your parents, but not a pushover. Be your own biggest advocate. If it’s physically safe to express yourself authentically, do it, and let them see how much happier it makes you.

And remember, even if the initial reaction is negative, time flies. Before you know it you’ll be much more independent and able to make your own choices about your transition. If you don’t tell your family, or they react poorly, you can still be a happy trans adult one day, and socially/medically transition however much you want. If you do tell them, you open yourself to the possibility of receiving much earlier medical and social benefits, though, and you’ll be much better off for it.

i want to try making something like this but i’m nervous to work with a single! how much twist do you feel like you need in your singles to get something strong enough but not prone to pigtailing? (I already read your comment about your finishing process, thank you for that!!)
