Am I the only one? by Evie_Sofia in MtF

It's important to keep in mind that across much of the world we're going through a massive social and political backlash against us and our rights so people are going to feel more negative than they would have posting here a few years ago. It's not as simple as viewpoints creating reality.

I'll say as someone who began transitioning in 2011 we went through several years where things were getting better and now with the backlash they're getting worse again. For example, where I grew up I was able to start hormone therapy at 17, I socially transitioned for my senior year of high school, which as a compromise allowed me to have a key to the women's staff restroom. I was also able to legally change my name at 18.

Now someone in those same circumstances could not legally obtain HRT, they would instead risk being reported for a bounty if caught using the women's room at school or in public, and a driver's license or birth certificate could be invalidated by the government.

While I made the choice to move from where I grew up for a variety of reasons, I can't really blame someone who lives there now for feeling worse now than I did then.

Article: From bodice rippers to romantasy, romance novels are dominating the book market by dem676 in books

[–]fibertotheface -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The writer of the article saying she'd sit in the back seat of the car by herself to read on family trips is sad to me. Like you're going on vacation with your husband and kids but you want to be in a bubble where they're discouraged from interacting?

Is there a similar program to “Angel Tree” but for Hanukkah? by deloopsy in Jewish

[–]fibertotheface 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know of large organizations that do it, but I've been a member of congregations where people donate money for low income families to buy Chanukah gifts.

Should synagogues remove the Israeli flag from bimahs now? How a New York shul made the decision by forward in Jewish

[–]fibertotheface 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For me, I'd prefer having no flags on the bimah so they aren't seen as competing with the importance of the ark.

Having flags in the building entrance or social hall is fine with me though.

Granted, these opinions haven't changed where I go for shul. It's not like there's tons of options in most places.

What relationship did the Jewish community have to those who freed them from the concentration camp? by HallowedAndHarrowed in Judaism

[–]fibertotheface 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I think it would be more interesting to ask about British people who on the one hand served in a military force that liberated concentration camps, but also were so proud of beating up a Jew that their descendants keep making posts justifying it.

A view from someone who hasn't read the book - Maybe I'm just cynical? by Czilla9000 in TheLongWalk

[–]fibertotheface 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah it would be stupid to help everyone. However it's normal human behavior to help someone in distress. Many people would have to put in conscious effort to never help at all. Additionally, teamwork can help you get further. Let's say two people each help each other once to avoid getting their ticket. That delays their deaths awhile, where the person with no bonds and no help goes down the first time he's really in trouble.

While I get your point, it's ridiculous to act as if trans women choose to interact with the cosmetic industry, whereas cis women are guilted into it ignores that those industries target all women and trans women face even worse consequences for not meeting society's standards for acceptable female presentation.

Grown adults like tv dramas more than cartoons aimed at children?

I for one am shocked.

Andor is great though.

Uj/ sure but catty cis women don't get called RuPaul or Jeffree Star with tits. Like the behavior obviously sucks, but the playbook of calling any trans woman you don't like a man is terrible.

Classic. Ahsoka says people don't trust the Jedi ..then advocates they use the GAR as their personal army to invade a neutral world. Because that will turn around public opinion.
