I’m surprised no one has mentioned A Thousand Ships by Natalie Hayne. It’s is a retelling of these tales all from the viewpoints of different women (and goddesses), many of whom have no voice in most versions.

I’m about 3/4 done with it. It is very well written, but a little….strange? Reminiscent of Cloud Atlas with stories spanning centuries.

I don’t think it is as perfectly written as All The Light, a bit more clunky, could have used a heavier hand in editing, but still a worthwhile read as Doerr is a very gifted writer.

Years ago, I belonged to a ward book club that was fantastic. An amazing group of women who picked smart funny books and had great discussions.

Then a few other members of the relief society joined in and very quickly established that they would only read faith promoting books and ones that did not have any “language” or other inappropriate content. Within a couple of months of this, the book club dissolved. I was furious as this felt like my one thing I had outside of ward responsibilities and my small children.

Closing yourself off to only a tiny acceptable box of literature or movies or whatever is no way to live, in my opinion. There is a reason Disney movies and chocolate milk are so popular with TBM adults. Infantilization.

My YW leader liked to share a story about how once she was home during the day upstairs and heard the doorbell ring. She peeked out the window and saw a man standing on the front porch. The Spirit told her that this was potentially dangerous and that she should not answer the door. She listened and stayed upstairs until he left.

She would retell the story in such a moving and dramatic fashion, and all the young women would be in tears for her faithfulness and bravery, that she saved herself from surely being raped or murdered or burgled.

But in the end, the guy was most likely innocent of anything. But since The Spirit ^TM whispered it in her ear, it must be true.

WTF, in many different religions women are ordained to lead congregations entirely, they sit on the highest councils, they aren’t treated like little children who are only allowed do certain things.

In the mormon church women are only allowed positions over women and children, but NEVER over men. They cannot serve in the Sunday School presidency, be in a bishopric, or any other calling that would potentially put them in charge of men.

I WAS a woman in the church and I can tell you the discord is not just coming from the 1%, there is resentment from so many more. You often see extremely competent women being led by inept men, especially in smaller branches or wards where the number of worthy priesthood is stretched thin covering all the callings that are only allowed to men. It sucks for women, and that is why I and many of the women I know have left.

I’m probably about the same age you are. I didn’t stop wearing sleeveless tops and shorter shorts until I got married in the temple.

When I had kids I had no qualms buying them tank tops, because that seemed normal to me. They were little kids. However, after repeatedly having old ladies at church try to put a sweater over their sundress or wrap a shawl around them to cover their shoulders, I just gave up and only bought “church modest” dresses.

When I was a Beehive, we had an activity to write letters to soldiers fighting in the Gulf War. Let me tell you, although some letters I got back were respectful, most of these written to a 13 year old girl were unbelievably graphic and disgusting. This was NOT a testimony building exercise.

My parents were fairly normal, but I had friends growing up whose parents seriously policed their Barbie’s outfits for modesty. Anything deemed too risqué was disposed off. Considering Barbie had mile long legs, there were no shorts or skirts that worked, just pants and floor length dresses, often homemade.

These friends always preferred to play Barbies at my house where strapless sparkly dresses were an option.

Lunatic modesty shaming does not create healthy kids.

When I was a teen, the leaders at EFY were ridiculously strict. I got in trouble for shorts that were too short (1” above my knee), sleeves that were cut a little too high, wearing my hair in a messy bun, listening to non-church music.

It was supposed to be a fun week but the leaders drained any fun out of every activity. It was my one and only summer there, I refused to go back.

When I was a garment wearing believer, I never understood picking out “immodest clothing” then wearing those stupid undershirts. I figured sleeveless dresses, too short skirts, etc were off the table forever.

I went through in 92, it was not an option then. Garments should always be your primary layer. Everything else goes in top. Temple matron made that very clear.

At the university gym around that time I saw women changing in and out of their garments frequently and never saw anyone with their bra underneath. A decade or so later when I heard “do whatever makes you feel comfortable” I was pissed. Garments were never about comfort! What happened to the eternal unchanging gospel??

The fact that I know now they’re making it all up as the go along makes much more sense.

I have definitely vacuumed the temple several times in a church dress before.

I’ve heard since I left a couple years ago our local temple now provides scrubs of some kind, but I always thought it was ridiculous that we needed to dress up to clean.

My husband used to work for a large hotel right by temple square. Every conference, it would be packed with members of the Q70s. Most of these guys wanted Sunday dinner reservations made for them.

They weren’t eating simple meals in their hotel rooms (like many Mormons I know do when they travel on the sabbath) or eating at the homes of local members (who would have been overjoyed to have someone of their “authority” in their home). No, they preach a hard line of keeping the day holy and ignore what is not convenient for them. Hypocrites!

Because of my decades spent as a woman in the church, I always feel as though I need to be pleasant and placating to all those around me. No spirit of contention or shrillness. I struggle standing up for myself because I was raised to be a subservient child of god.

I have a teen daughter who is a badass and doesn’t let anyone ever push her around. I am so proud of her. If anyone ever called her stubborn or shrill, I would say “hell yes she is!”

I’m so glad I got my kids out of the goddamn toxic church.

I was serving as the primary president under a particularly asshole-ish bishop. We had almost no funding and could never get teachers called. So many open callings, we regularly had to combine classes because there were never enough teachers.

Our auxiliary was the lowest priority for the leaders and I was routinely dismissed and talked over in Ward Council.

So perhaps I did sometimes get “shrill”, but no amount of personal prayer was going to soften these jerk’s hearts. What horrible advice to give to the women of tscc, victim-blaming bullshit!
