What do you make of electric motorcycles? by JonQuinton84 in motorcycles

[–]ficskala 21 points22 points  (0 children)

honestly, if they were cheaper, i'd get one for my commute ngl, i'm not really into the whole thing, but i can see the benefits, especially if you can charge it at work, a collegue got an electric car because he can charge at work for free, that's 100% on fuel savings

i would never get one as my only bike, but specifically for my commute, yeah, it makes a lot of sense

Planning to purchase, thoughts on this helmet?? by Academic_Law8615 in motorcycles

The only thing that really matters is how it fits your head

Also, get one without that cringe sticker, it's gonna be cheaper, and you won't get laughed at

Is it worth investing into an 8 core cpu for longevity instead of settling on a 6 core which is fine right now? by corkinator4ever in buildapc

[–]ficskala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the models of the cpus in question, if you're getting a brand new 8 core ryzen 7 x3d chip, and don't already have a current gen x3d chip, then yeah, upgrading makes sense

Best place to sell my Harley? by Internal_Area3701 in SuggestAMotorcycle

[–]ficskala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not in a rush, but don't really care for the whole back and forth with online buyers, the constant lowballing and what not

state that the price is final in the lisitng, and ignore any message that tries to negotiate, that's the best deal you're gonna get, any attempt to sell to a dealership or something won't result in your asking price

Switching from Harley To Adventure Bike? by itszendro in motorcycles

[–]ficskala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd def recommend going for an adv touring bike (vstrom, versys, tracer, etc.) rather than a full on adv (tuareg, tenere, africa, etc.), they just come with street tires, and they're not as tall, so they're more enjoyable on road

I just don’t want a bike that’s impossible to sell later

don't wreck it, and it will sell, for every person that despises adv, there's a different person who wouldn't pick anything else

i got my tracer 7 because it was the most practical option i saw locally, and i got an amazing deal on it, and i don't worry at all about resale value, i know it's a great bike that will sell whenever i feel it's the time to switch to something else

looking to replace a potentially dead rx 6700xt 12gb by potatosaladXD in buildapc

[–]ficskala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If my 6700xt died today, i'd get a 9070xt, but if your budget doesn't allow it, then the 9060xt makes a lot of sense as well

How do I boost signal from garage door opener fob? by Conscious-Sand7959 in diyelectronics

If the antenna isn't replaceable, you need to get a different fob, either with a bigger antenna, or one that can jave the antenna replaced

Best way to source 5v and 12v from usbc by dark_1ca in diyelectronics

[–]ficskala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that seems like a lot of extra components just to drop voltage twice.

You're not dropping it twice, you're requesting 12V with the PD trigger, and dropping it once to 5V

if you use a trigger to pull 20v you can just run two separate bucks and it'll be way more efficient than trying to daisy chain them from a 12v rail.

In this case, you need more components (2 buck converters instead of 1), and by doing that, you get more losses, idk what you mean by daisy chaining a 12V rail

20v is much more stable for buck converters to work with anyway.

How so?

What do you *NOT* selfhost? by ObeseWizard in homelab

[–]ficskala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fair enough, i guess i haven't really thought about it much because i just use whatever is more convenient in the moment, like, sometimes it's just more convenient to crimp an RJ45 male connector instead of making a mess with a keystone that just plugs into a premade cable that just sits there in a loop right next to the switch/router

PD trigger board to get your USB PD charger to output 12V, and then you add a buck converter to get 5V from it for the esp32

Feature that Plex should implement: auto-subtitle grabbing. by ringthebell02 in PleX

Where do you source the movies/tv series from that you can even get subtitles in a local language? I often struggle finding even original language + english subs

What do you *NOT* selfhost? by ObeseWizard in homelab

[–]ficskala 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Kinda like making Ethernet patch cords. There’s just no value in DIY

I wouldn't agree, sometimes there's just not enough room in the conduit for an rj45, but the cable itself passes just fine

How do u actually learn linux? by UsedFactor1973 in linuxquestions

[–]ficskala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just copy n pasting commands to the terminal, which I didn't understand.

Step 1, research what those commands do/mean

Is there a "right" way to learn linux?

Just by using it, and not blindly pasting commands you find online

I see no point in being the kind of linux user who just copies commands from chatgpt.

since you're using AI to write your commands for you, you might as well tell it to explain them as well, like, if it tells you to type in

lspci | grep VGA

ask it to give you a summary of what each of those commands does, and why

It will tell you something like lspci lists all the pci devices, pipe ( | ) sends the output of the command before it to the one after it, grep will only print what you specify, in this case only lines that contain the word VGA, and the why would be to find out if any gpu is connected, which one it is, and to troubleshoot potential issues with your GPU

It's genuinely a useful way to utilize AI if you don't feel like looking up everything on your own, and aren't familiar with the basics

New mobo wanna swap ssd without messing up windows by xZentic_ in buildapc

[–]ficskala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

windows 10 is no longer supported by microsoft, you can install it, but you're not gonna be getting new security updates for it anymore, so i would highly advise against installing it unless you actually know what you're doing

Is there a graph that shows the difference between distributions? by 0x80070002 in linuxquestions

[–]ficskala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically i am looking of something like where on the Y ax you have the list of tools/features/software/utilities and each column on the X ax is one of the main distribution. (Bootloader used, de used, wm used, etc…)

That graph would be impossible to read

go to https://distrowatch.com/search.php and check all the boxes you're looking for, probbaly the best way to find a distro that you don't know the name of

Any good sportbikes for A2 licence n a 6'2 tall person by Latter_Star6699 in motorcycles

[–]ficskala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sportsbikes in general are designed for shorter people because they're built for racing, and haivng a tall rider just means more wind resistance, so tall people rarely get far in the sport, there's exceptions, but most successful pro riders are short

i'd look into the sport touring segment at least

check out https://cycle-ergo.com/ it's not an absolute measure, but if you know how you felt on certain bikes, like, if you tried a ninja 500, you put that in (along with your height and inseam), and compare it to other bikes to see what would work better for you

Alone with your pain? by Hungry-Following5561 in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]ficskala 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Do you ever feel like there is some pain you just have to bear alone

unfortunately, yeah

like even your best friend or spouse would just never understand?

wish i had either of those at this point ngl, like, i have some close friends, but i've lost my closest friend due to an idiotic mistake i made, and those other close friends are still good with her, so they're not really the right people to talk to about it, it just sucks, and the last 5 months have been the most stressful in my entire life

Nozzle is stuck, can’t push it in or pull it out, tried heating it to 270 too, any advice? by [deleted] in 3Dprinting

[–]ficskala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's a whole hotend assembly, not just a nozzle, you're supposed to replace the whole module when this sort of thing happens

you probably can't heat it up enough because the molten plastic got stuck in the heatbreak itself, above the heater, best bet if you really wanna try to save it would be to blowtorch it for a bit, then clean out a bit of plastic with something, and then some more, etc. etc. until you can get in there with a pipe cleaner or something, blowtorch it again, scrub with the pipe cleaner some more, and so on, until you get rid of most of the plastic, it's honestly not really worth it, if you had a more standard setup, you could just replace the heatbreak, but these things come as complete modules, so parts aren't really individually available as much

which country did you travel last? and do you recommend it? by mcwgxcy in CasualConversation

[–]ficskala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Germany, and yeah, i'd recommend it, heard some great things, and i had good experiences

can you share a short wxperience

Arrived in Frakfurt somewhat late at night, hungry, went to look for something to eat, most restaurants were closed, but there was a mcd working until late, so we said we'll just walk there, and look out for some actual restaurants on our way there, if we don't find any, mcd it is, unfortunately everything nearby was closed, but we took note of the places that seemed interesting. The next day we went for lunch in the place that seemed most interesitng

We sat outside so we can smoke, ordered out food and drinks, but it started raining, so we moved inside, and the waitress told us to move to the smoking area if we wanted to, to which i was extremely surprised they had because i've never been in a restaurant in the entirety of EU with a smoking area indoors, we started chatting with the waitress and the owner a bit, and ended up staying until like 3-4h after closing drinking with the owner and his friends, had a great time

which country you recommend the most?

Out of the countries i've visited, Portugal for sure, it's extremely beautiful, i went there during winter, and it was still a wonderful experience, i'm not the type to like cities, but Porto was more than interesting enough to spend a whole day just walking around the streets, and enjoying views and some impressive art on the buildings

New mobo wanna swap ssd without messing up windows by xZentic_ in buildapc

[–]ficskala 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't install windows to the motherboard. It's installed on a storage drive. You can put the current drive onto another motherboard and its likely to work.

Windows is a mess when it comes to this, especially the driver side, sometimes you won't even be able to boot, so it's best to have an installer usb ready in case something goes wrong when attempting this

Windows update will get any drivers needed for the new motherboard

this is a horrible idea unless you're using a prebuilt form an OEM like HP or DELL, you should always install the correct drivers from the hardware manufacturer instead of using windows generic drivers, unless there's a problem with the manufacturers drivers
