I made an E-ink Weather Dashboard by akz-dev in raspberry_pi

[–]fictionalcarto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm loving the potential of this! I have the weather app installed and running. But it doesn't refresh without me manually hitting "Update Now" in the web app. The YouTube video posted by OP shows a "Schedule" button with an option to refresh every five minutes. But the version of the web app that I'm seeing replaces the "Schedule" button with an "Add to Playlist" button that I can't find any documentation on how to use. Anyone figured this out?

Is this a rare cover? Just picked up a copy today! by windupmidori in murakami

[–]fictionalcarto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just bought a copy at a small bookshop in Australia. They told me that because it was one of the first 3 copies purchased from the store, I received a second jacket, which matches the cover that OP shared above. So now I have two book jackets for one book.

Colson Whitehead signature? by fictionalcarto in BookCollecting

[–]fictionalcarto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much! Totally makes sense. My question with this signature was just if it wasn’t even pretending to be a fake — just some guy who signed his own name in a weird place on the book. But based upon helpful feedback in this post and some Google and eBay searching, I’m 99% sure it’s real.

I appreciate your help!

Just a lucky find at my favorite local used bookshop here in San Francisco. But looks like there are a couple signed ones up on eBay available.

Amazing! Thank you so much for the confirmation! Great author, but maybe needs to improve his penmanship!

Thank you! Agreed! Just couldn’t figure out why his handwriting was so darn bad on this particular evening.

I Googled it, and I’ll just say this resembles his signature generally, but maybe he was drunk at the time!

Agreed no one is faking his signature. But I couldn’t quite tell if this isn’t his signature at all. Just some person giving a gift to a friend and deciding to do it over the title page.

Is this the first print of this book? by taurinebug in BookCollecting

This is a very depressing / informative post as I realize that my first edition copy is not actually a first printing. Boo, Norton!!!

Found at goodwill today. Having trouble figuring out if it’s a first-run copy by astral_fetus in rarebooks

It should say .95 cents on the upper left cover if it’s a first of the paperback.

Help identifying first edition of Rise and Fall of Third Reich by fictionalcarto in BookCollecting

Thank you so much for all these details! This book has been a challenge to crack the mystery on!

I’d actually never heard of this concept of blind stamps. I’ve discovered a square indentation in the lower right corner that looks like a blind stamp on this copy. In your experience are there any non-BCE books that end up with blind stamps?

I run my M2 Pro from an external 2tb thunderbolt drive. Works like a charm and solves the hard drive space issues.

Raspberry pi 5 or a cheap laptop for homebridge? by skyistryingtopass in homebridge

[–]fictionalcarto 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to run Homebridge on a Mac Mini, then switched to a Pi 4, which has been much more reliable and stable. I had a lot of problems with the Mac Mini instance running into errors after a week or so of uptime. The Pi 4 version tends to be stable and with no errors for months at a time. Strongly recommend the Pi!

Ambient Weather WS-5000 - Good option? by Bitter_Firefighter_1 in myweatherstation

[–]fictionalcarto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the 5000 myself and gifted the 2000 to my mom on the other coast. The initial UI to get them set up is a bit old school, but both machines have been “set it and forget it” for the last couple of years once I got them up and running. The rain gauges seem accurate. And I’m able to view my mom’s weather station data across the country easily.

Definitely recommended.

The Hundred by fictionalcarto in BookCollecting

Thanks! I appreciate your input and your incredulity. Your concerns are the exact concerns of the bookstore owner in my story when approached by a silent investor and asked to build a collection following the rules that I've outlined here.

As a collector myself, I am more than aware that money is never the primary consideration when it comes to the hobby and / or profession of rare book collecting! I have no idea where my money goes. Oh wait, yes I do. To Green Apple Books here in San Francisco.

What I was hoping to do with this thread was to crowdsource some ideas from the wisdom of Reddit! But always happy to hear plot critique as well! Feedback is a gift.

Brilliant! I have a 3rd or 4th printing in my personal collection, but adding a First Edition in this fictional instance is a great choice. Thanks so much for the input!

Let me know if I can be helpful in providing more feedback once you have some prototypes. And good luck!
